terran ghost
since nobody else is making a ghost model for the SC conversion pack, i have taken up the task and started modelling. here's what i have got so far at the bottom. It already has 170 polys...

It will be female (ala sc:ghost's Nova)i haven't decided whether to make this a light or heavy marine model though.

I did this in Milkshape, but it says i have to pay $20 usd to register it in a month, so i want to take a poll on the modelling community to see what you guys think is the best free modelling tool out there. I was thinking about downloading gmax or softimage XSI. since gmax /3dsmax has more tuts on the net i was leaning towards that. but i'd also like to hear some other opinions from you guys (e.g. stick with milkshape). from what i've seen in the tutorials 3dsmax is like the photoshop of 3d modelling: hella expensive, but amazing features and plugin communitiy. how much does it cost in usd? anyone know?

thanks in advance for any feedback, on the model or modelling app.

Milkshape's damn good for its price. You'll only need something like max if you're planning on getting serious about modeling, I think. 3dsmax5, new, for a standalone license, is $3100. I believe a student license is less, but will still cost you more than a new computer. q: I'd go with Gmax or Milkshape.

Another good thing about Milkshape is that max's export-SMD plugin is pretty twitchy; sometimes you need to open the file in milkshape *anyway* just so you can export it properly. *coil growls about stupid noncompiling SMD files*

hmm. i guess i'll have to fork over 20 bucks anyways just for the compiling/decompiliing that milkshape does. just out of curiosity though, are the official models for NS made with LEGIT version max or some other modeller (e.g. bootlegged max)?

I don't know if the NS modelers own the software they use legitimately. If they're involved in the industry (as some, like Cory, are), the chances are they have a legit copy of max through their employer.

As a moderator, however, I have to actively discourage talk of warez & software piracy on the boards. Sorry. ^^

lo just a quick suggestion on the model make it a light marine as the ghosts are light armoured in game and also quite nimble just my opinion though plus the current starcraft marine can already be converted to heavy armour just by renaming the model

I'd suggest that you fork over the 20 bucks, I know I am today, since everyone seems to like the skinning I'm doing on Tresth's Marine model.

I'd also suggest doing the model for the regular Marine, since, like was stated before, they are more nimble, less armored, etc. Also, don't go overload on the facial polies if theres no need. A good skinner can get you the same effect

I would suggest starting with the torso, then arms or legs, then legs or arms, and *last* the head. The head, while important, is an area where it's easy to go over-budget on polys, so it's best to get the rest of the body down before you try it. It's also fairly detailed, and easy to get the proportions wrong if you don't have the rest of the body for reference.

the head, face actually, is where i wanted to invest a lot of polies. i didnt' want to make just a textured face but one with boned eyes and mouth, and am planning on doing anims for voice comm and such.

quality a model that actually speaks when voice comms are activated will come in handy for my new ns movie

Edit: you know like its possible to make 2 seperate skin types can you make like 1 male and 1 female

Also, I might add, with the exception of Starcraft Ghost's Main Character Nova, Ghost's always wear helmets.

for some reason all the male ghosts wore helmets yet the females did not ( kerrigan )

Unless the heavy wore a helmet, I think ns really needs female models.

If I were you, I would go to GMAX and also buy Milkshape. Staying completely legit is great. I find 3DS MAX great but Milkshape is good for doing the little thing like compiling and little last minute tweaks. But seeing how 3DS MAX is a tad high for anyones pocket, I see GMAX as a great resort.

please, don't lie to the man!

to export FROM GMAX into HL, you have to convert it to a Q3 model, using Gmax - Tempest... then import into MS3D, re-do all your groups, animate, and assign to bones...

i personally found it a pain... but that was just me, and mostly because i couldn't get export to 3ds to work right... ohh well, to each his own... warez = bad.... MS3D = $20

I hate to post this close to my last, but here it goes. Sure going through that isn't that great to say the least, but all and all it is worth it. If he were to ever buy 3DS MAX(not sure of the possiblity) then it pays off. Even if he doesn't, I personally prefer the ability of GMAX over Milkshape. But in the end I have only used 3DS MAX and Milkshape, I have taken looks at GMAX but never made one model in it so it might not be as good as I let on.

Reaps, It's because you wouldn't know it's a girl in Starcraft if it didn't have a helmet, plus it was a hero.

And Nova from Starcraft Ghost is the main character, and having her with a helmet would be too bland.

    ;p

Yes. Who would want a bunch of clones running around anyway? Hide their faces, so it looks a little less silly.
