this config was made very popular by people exploiting binds/scripts in HL-DM it left the WAZX keys free for weapon binds and or scripts (180 turn, auto tau/missile shot) but I do know a few people who use that config without scripts or binds in HLDM
I use arrows for movement, 0 numpad for duck, ctrl for jump, left click for fire, right click for menu, mouse 3 for voice, mouse 4 for use, mouse 5 for reload, enter for team chat, and shift for scoreboard. The only commands that I do not have ready access to are flashlight (insert) and worldchat (y). But I also don't use scripts so eh. *shrugs*
Everything's on the keypad here kp_8 - kp_6 - kp_5 - kp_4 : movement / : crouch * : reload 7 : flashlight 9 : tag - : use + : last used weapon 3 : show scores kp_enter : jump kp_ins : voice comm
mouse 1 : fire (duh) mouse 3: menu mouse3 : drop - switch weapon

Anyway, I used to use the arrow keys, but then I realised they were too far from the other keys, so I switched to WASD. My gameplay improved, too.
One of the many features my keyboard has is 2 sets of curser keys on either side of the keyboard. The one on the left of the keyboard is right beside the shift and ctrl keys. With the cursor keys place where they are, it gives my thumb and first fingers easy reach and access to tab, caps, shift, crtl, q, a, z. s, x. So in total 9 different keys besides my cursor keys. And with the mouse in my right hand...there are no cross overs with the arms or slanting of my keyboard. =)
I find the number pad and esdf way too cumbersome....hate it when i hit other key by accident.
Too bad my keyboard is dying....I cant seem to find any other like it so far.... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

Hmm, standard WASDer here, except i have shift on crouch and ctrl on walk, which i believe is backwards for most people. Both of those are toggles too, not holds.
I'm a HL tweak phreak, and my config evolved through a zillion modifications to end up pretty much back where it started. I have always, ALWAYS used the arrow keys, and moved everything else around it. Reload has been quotation-mark for as long as I can remember, I usually have my melee weapon on mouse2 (I played three years of TFC spy; you learn to keep your knife close).
My config used to have my hand stretched out over the keyboard like a squashed spider, so that I could reach the k and l keys (which I used for grenades). I've changed my config so many millions of times that I could probably get used to WASD quite easily...
Anyways, like I said, I moved the weapon keys an left the movement keys where they were instead of leaving the weapon keys and moving the movement keys. My weapons are o p [ ] \, backspace is use, shift is jump, enter is walk, ctrl is crouch. I use ins,home,del,end,pgup,pgdn for "utility" stuff (grenades, bandages, chuckles, flashlights, that sort of thing). Mouse1 is and always will be primary fire (although in TFC it's actually hooked up to an elaborate script... but that's another story.)
Oh, and my mousewheel and keypad are taken up by my wonderful <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=16289' target='_blank'>BFCAS script</a>, which handles everything from comms binds to building to evolution to changing my volume, ALL on the keypad. I've made versions of it for TFC, CS, DoD, NS and even RtCW. So my config is pretty much standard across all games I (have) play(ed).
Your description of BFCAS inspired my keypad script thingie... but I never downloaded yours so I didn't officially copy it <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->. And a lot of the guys I used to play with (as well as myself) used ESDF in HLDM and set the keys surrounding it to select various weapons with one press. Not exploiting, just being efficient.
WASD isn't good at all. It doesnt give you enough buttons in the left side (I can easily press only left shift if I would use wasd layout).
<b>YGHJ</b> is the right choise! It gives you easily three additional buttons in left side, four more if you move your arm just a bit. There is space right below and right alt-gr right next to it.
That also leaves the WASD area to be used with the commander interface (drop ammo, medpacks, scan etc)
Here is my layout: YGHJ - basic movement T and U - primary and secondary weapons K - reload I - drop weapon F - flashlight C - 3rd weapon slot (acid rockets etc) V - 4th weapon slot X - ingame radio Z - outgame radio (like TeamSpeak2, RogerWilco etc)
I use WASD and ESDF interchangebly depending on the mod/game in question
In Tribes 2 is was CRITICAL to use ESDF since you had to have access to a LOT more binds however, there are some complications in using ESDF 1: Unless you hands are larger than mine, the 'natural' position of the left 4th finger (thumb is not a finger!) will rest on the dreded Windows key and not CTRL. Thus, a jerk reaction may have you looking at desktop (A quick butterknife job will solve that problem) 2: There are no advantages for accessing the 1-0 keys with ESDF BUT if you've adapted into a touch-typer, you may find that adapting to 2345 instead of 1234 for the weapon slots a bit more difficult because you automatically reach for 1, then attempt to move forward only instead hit some other bind...not good kharma
For HL, I stick with WASD because that's my mentallity setting....I can't re-adjust to ESDF in the HL setting because there is no major need for it. It all depends on the game and need really
My common binds:
WASD,E,R,T,Y,U (you should know from defaults) CTRL: Crouch SHIFT: Walk ALT: Voicecomms SPACE: Jump Keypad: Subsitute binding system for comm mode
MOUSE1&2: Defaults MOUSE3: Reload MWHEELUP: Script: slot3;wait;slot1 (IE: Primary Weapon, if not avaliable then knife. Also works as a nifty reload cancel!) MWHEELDOWN: Same as above but for the pistol
This places all shooting related functions on the Mouse (Fire, alt [NS has that as the menu instead], reload and 2 cancel reload scripts for slot 1 and 2. OTher mods may differ but that's the general idea)
Yes, ESDF in Tribes 2 (can't crouch in Tribes 2, so hitting the windows key accidentally isn't as problematic), WASD in HL (need that crouch key). In some other games, the cursor keys. In Crusader and Heavy Gear 2 the numpad (movement in HG2, especially in the space levels, is complicated enough that any normal keybinds would not be adequate). And, of course, in good flightsims: almost every joystick, mouse and keyboard key bound to something, many of them bound to three or four functions in combination with various modifier keys. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> (some people claim they don't read manuals, I can only assume they don't play realistic modern jet sims)
Also, when making your keyboard configs, there's a hardware problem in many keyboards that can mess things up. For keys that will be used in combination with other keys, crouch for example, it's best to pick one of Control, Alt, Shift. Details: <a href='http://www.sjbaker.org/steve/omniv/keyboards_are_evil.html' target='_blank'>http://www.sjbaker.org/steve/omniv/keyboar...s_are_evil.html</a>
Mouse 1 - Fire Mouse 2 - Move Foward Mouse 3 - Weapon switch (or mouse wheel) Depends on game Control - Secondary Fire Alt - Jump (space bar is a bit left up on the left side) Space - Voice Activation S - Back A - Strafe left D - Strafe right (lol SAD) X/C - Duck Shift - Walk <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
hehe.. If I play Operation Flashpoint. My controls are changed hehe
I pretty much use the default except shift is crouch instead of ctrl because my pinky is good for holding things down and that's a necessity when you're fighting Marines close quarters as Skulk and you don't want wallwalk to fudge things up for you. Also, Q is my voicecomm button because it's easy to reach and allows me to retain my most accurate aiming abilities whereas mouse3 which I see most people use for voicecomm effects my aim. That setup that allows for 25 keys looks good, but old habits die hard. Oh yea, if you have trouble reaching your keys but you want to keep them because of accessibility just move your keyboard <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->...
I still hold that mine is supreme. Look on page two in case you were wondering!

Arrowkeys - movement
Shift - jump
Ctrl - duck
Mouse1 & mouse2 - primary and secondary fire
Mouse3 - reload
Enter - walk (or sprint in DoD)
/ - Use
Suppr.* - voice comm
kp_ins, kp_end, kp_downarrow, kp_pgdn - slot1 to slot4 respectively (w/ fastswitch enabled)
And this all works perfectly for me.
*I use a french keyboard... it would be the key directly above leftarrow

7 : flashlight
9 : tag

3 : show scores
kp_enter : jump
kp_ins : voice comm
mouse 1 : fire (duh)
mouse 3: menu
mouse3 : drop - switch weapon
weirdo config, but hell it works good.

esdf FOR LIFE!!
And i have Q bound to chuckle/taunt.
DOWNARROW = Move back
LEFTARROW = Strafe left
RIGHTARROW = Strafe right
KP_INS = Duck Jump (very easy to jump with my index finger)
KP_DEL = Duck Toggle (toggle means I don't have to keep my finger on it, limiting my movement)
KP_ENTER = Drop Weapon
KP_END = Slot 3 (this is knife for the marines... I like having knife at very easy reach for if I have to quickly pull it out)
KP_DOWNARROW = Slot 2 (pistol, again this is easy as it is in reach of my index finger for quickly equipping it)
KP_PGDN = Slot 1 (not always something I might need to equip in a panic, so it's ok being there)
KP_LEFTARROW = Slot 4
KP_(rest of em) = All the other slots (no weapons on these, but have em bound anyway incase I need to vote or something)
SHIFT = Walk Toggle (again, toggle means I can press it once without having to keep my pinky finger on it, limiting my movement)
CTRL = Use
SPACE = Reload
I use DEL END INS HOME PGUP AND PGDN for various marine, alien or commander things, depending on what config file I execute...
My config used to have my hand stretched out over the keyboard like a squashed spider, so that I could reach the k and l keys (which I used for grenades). I've changed my config so many millions of times that I could probably get used to WASD quite easily...

The only other interesting thing about my config is I use ";qj" for my need health/ammo/orders binds... and... yeah I want a new keyboard. o_O
