Name him after me. Clay Roberts (or Clayton but Clay is shorter and cooler). He's being born in September? Gordon Roberts anyone? So what's your fave name so far?
On a tangential subject, "Alyx"? Puhlease. Strike one for Valve. Great looking character with a **** alternative spelling name. It's a good thing there are so many other reasons I'm rabidly looking forward to HL2.
You're lucky, actually. 'Roberts' is a relatively neutral last name, pretty much everything sounds at least semi-decent with it. Imagine being called 'Kowalski'...
Kowalski? Pah. Imagine having a last name that starts with a 'Z' and has a silent 'a' and a silent 'j' in it. I couldn't count the number of misproununciations and manglings I've heard. Sometime I don't even recognize who they're trying to talk about.
By the time your kid grows up "unique" names will be commonplace.
Plan ahead, name him Bob. By then everybody will spell it Bhobb (pronounced bob.)
EDIT: I didn't mean that to be stupid sounding "robert roberts.." I was only giving an example of a common name. Any common names works
I think you underestimate the power of mediocrity. There will still be masses upon masses naming their kids the future fad equivalent of "Brittney", "Tyler", etc. According to the social security register, the most popular US name is still Michael by a huge margin. It may seem like there are a lot of truly unique/unusual names out there, but there are in truth very few in relative numbers. And even most of those are simply spelling or pronunciation variants on common names.
Yes, Roberts is fairly neutral, but it also tosses out anything that starts with "R", because that just sounds too silly. For the many who have brought up "Robert", the nicest thing I can say about that name is that there is already a musician named Robbie Robertson, and knowing that later in life is as close as my kid is going to come to that.
We still don't have any certain contenders. I liked Zero a lot, but that's not gonna fly.

I just finished reading Stranger In a Strange Land, by Heinlein... name him Jubal. It's non-conventional, not too strange so he won't face beatings in the school yard, doesn't need to be shortened and it's fun to say.
JUBAL YOU GET BACK IN THIS HOUSE RIGHT NOW!!
Also, Heinlein says it means "father of all" if you're a stickler for meanings... and Jubal Roberts doesn't sound too bad, does it?

or you could just.. you know.. call him 'baby', then 'child', etc
then when he grows up ask him what he wants to be called

Failing that, you can always go with Seven (7). But then again, Seven Roberts doesnt quite fit...
