<div class="IPBDescription">whats the deal with wall_lab</div> A number of threads make reference to the use of wall_lab.wad in maps. Mine contains a single texture reading "do NOT use wall_lab.wad." What's story behind this?

    The wall_lab textures have all been moved to ns.wad. The wall_lab.wad file was therefore no longer necessary, but when Merk and I made these changes, it was too late to get to manah for fixing ns_caged to not use the wall_lab.wad file (as Merk and I had already done to our own maps). The texture names were the same in ns.wad, so we just left a dummy wall_lab.wad so we didn't have to hold up the release getting a new version of Caged from manah.

    I'm not sure why the wall_lab.wad has that lovely little message, but when people are talking about the wall_lab.wad they are actualy referring to the set of wall_lab textures which see an incredible amount of use in community maps. This is mainly because there is almost one wall_lab texture for every situation, for the mappers this means that they can create a well textured map with minimal effort (some of the more cynical community members might even say minimal skill is required too).

    I wouldn't say cynical, I'd say stupid.

    The wall_lab set is the most complete set of the available sets. Using other texture sets doesn't show any level of talent over someone else; it shows different creative ideas. If you want a full map with a really cohesive theme, though, the wall_lab set is about as cohesive as you can get.
