<div class="IPBDescription">'new' shouldn't = 'n00b'</div> *edit* A lot of people were taking this post the wrong way, so I believe I need to clear up what I was saying.
-First off, n00b meens the same thing as newbie. n00b is just ""elite"" speak for newbie.
Thesis: Ns is fun because there are many differnt ways to play it, yet any new tactic is immidatly called n00b and rejected. This is bad.
Evidence: Three differnt chambers could be built first, but it's always defence, not because defence is the "best" but because if you don't you get called a n00b and are banned.
If a com doesn't get a certin upgrade or drop a kind of gun, he is baned not because he views the game differntly, but because it always has to be a jet instead of armor, or a hmg instead of a shotgun.
If a com/gorge does something differntly from a player, the player assumes its cuz the com/gorge doesn't know any better. Instead of thinking that maby they are wrong, or that the commander/gorge has his own reasons
Conclusion: Ns is ballenced and things like jet packs, hmgs, and def chambers arn't <b>always</b> the best thing for the job. So stop calling people n00bs just cuz they have a differnt plan.

A Newbie is new to the game but wants and can learn.
On the other hand a Noob is a person who has been told that something is stupid but contiues to do it because he "thinks" it is a better way. Like lets say someone builds a tf in base at the star, it costs 20 res and it is useless, unless you put in atleast 2 turrets 19 res each, whereas you could have built a arms-lab, or a bunch of reses.
But sometimes when you play you want to win, so people get mad when someone, newbie or noob, builds a sensory and after that 8 oc before venturing out of the hive.
Someone who tseepra described isn't called a noob, they are called an arse.
doesn`t everyone else ?
gorgie many oc`s BEHIND the hive.
: dude, get off gorge
; SUYF M3 teh leetest ere j00 nigga
this is why i like the gorge kick plugin thing.
if only it could go like.
:gorge heal me
;whats heal?
:second weapon
*heal heal heal*
see the diffrence ?
Other than that, people who do these things and don't respond to any comments on their actions or any comments at ALL, whether they don't understand english or have typing speed of a mangled cow, they seem to ignore everyone else and do whatever they want.
Hence, I've began to play Planetside MUCH more than NS <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
What's that? You'll run up right next to me while I'm trying to hide and snipe from a hilltop? Thanks for giving my position away...*BLAM* Oops, did I kill you?
* Refuses to learn the basics of NS before playing. This is not someone who doesn't know the basics, but someone who ignores help and doesn't read the manual, etc.
*Is inflexible in their playing strategy to the point that they will harass and attempt to eject anyone who doesn't follow said strategy.
So thinking about it, Chadseh has a good point. A newbie is just someone who is new and doesn't know how to play. A n00b is basically just an arse, but because of this lovely gaming community we're all a part of we immediately label someone as a newbie or however you want to spell it.

Emphasis mine. That's the annoying part of this whole idea. Simply because you told someone that they're wrong means that they are in fact wrong? Ever hear of open-mindedness? Let the gorge do whatever he wants. Let your comm play around. It's just a game! After the game you can point out in a friendly manner where they might have done something different and offer other constructive criticism. Offer to help them learn how to be a better player, etc.
Don't simply assume because you have said something that someone will immediately follow it. Turn the tables for half a second and lets pretend someone else says what you're doing is stupid and n00bish. You'll most likely disregard them because you "think it is a better way after beeing told that something is stupid." It's just a game. Calm down. Let people play. Be helpful. Whee.
i wont post what some of my team mates said to him, as they were not as near as kind to him as i was...well, when i say kind, i mean not screaming at him......
this is what happened:
/me joins midgame
people on the voice comm requesting defence chambers
after some spectating i notice the gorge doesnt seem to know what he is doing, my point is proven when he appears to run around in circles...
i spawn in as alien, and ask if the gorge is a newbie.
gorge replies with:
"yup, i have no idea what i am doing"
as you can tell, i am not amused...
"you let him go gorge?"
i ask...
"everyone's new at some stage"
he rightly proclaims.
"there is a manual that comes with the download"
i point out.
"i dont read them"
he states
"well then you are an even bigger n00b"
"its just click and play"
he says
"i didnt know what it does so lay off me ok?"
he screams
"well if you dont know what you are doing as gorge, it sort of ruins things"
i rightly point out to him..
game continues, at this point i believe someone else had got the hive up at gen.
10 minutes later, and everyone is going fade and he asks:
"why dont these upgrades work?"
"you dont have enough res, you need to get res by building res towers"
"no, i cant get regeneration to work, i keep clicking it but nothing happens"
"you need to be near a defence chamber"
"oh its ok, im fade now"
and the best ones came at me during and after gen was being raped by Heavy armoured marines and HMGS..
"these marines have weird armour"
"yes, thats heavy armour"
do you get points for killing people?
team-mates: "no"
me: "no"
" you need to get res by building res towers"
a few minutes pass...
"someone show me a res tower, i need to get more res"
(i was under the impression that he thought standing next to one would give him res")

As you can see, there is a huge difference between a newbie and a n00b.
noob: someone who has no clue as to what to do, because
a) he/she hasnt read the manual
b) has a small IQ
c) refuses to listen to his/her teammates
d) all of the above
newbie: someone new to the game, and has a basic understanding of what to do because:
a) he/she has taken the time to go off and learn about the game
b) read the manual to get a basic understanding
c) listened to orders and his/her teammates
being a newbie doesnt make you rubbish at the game. Being a n00b does.
With that being said; here goes.
I feel it's a VERY sad day in the world of Computer Gaming when people who take it so seriously feel the need to make fun, vindicate or alienate those who are new to something. Those who don't take it quite as seriously as they might. Computer Games were meant for a purpose, to be enjoyed.
Where do people get off calling others names because they don't know how to do something in a game. I mean, come on now -- are we really so socially depraved as a society that we need to condemn those who can't play a simple computer game? So what ?! Who cares, life goes on, people have other viable and amiable talents besides playing computer games.
There is just TOO much emphasis on becoming a "Professional" gamer these days with competitions and prizes being awarded to "Professional" players, that we often lose sight of what's really important.. THE FUN, games were NOT meant to be this competative, they were NOT created so people would waste away their weekends and sleepless nights pondering how to beat that ever-growing threat of "3D" or whatever/whoever comes to bear in the game world.
I think everyone who makes fun of "nubies" "noobs" or whatever they may be called should really sit down, play some super mario bros. and think about the good old days, when games were simple and EVERYONE enjoyed them.
I would personally not mind if a n00b who had no concept as to what to do was playing on the server, its when they go gorge or commander, then ask "oooh, what does this button doooo?" then the fun goes missing in action, as the team without the new player has a huge advantage and then it gets all too easy to win, and the team with the new player arent recieveing orders/have to spend their time requesting for a tower or hive

wow....
thats all I can say
READ THE MANUAL PEOPLE!
Where does a n00b get off thinkin he can ruin my and eveyone elses fun who wish to play the game right? Why is it acceptable for a person who refuses to play the role in the game he choose in the correct fashion? Please note, I am not refering to an alternate build order, but NO build order. I am not refering to people going gorge when there already is one, I am refering to people that go gorge and sit in the hive waiting for res to go fade while the marines are destroying the other hive. Marines that refuse to leave marine start without 250 LMG ammo and 30 pistol ammo while the com SCREAMS over voice com that we are losing the phase gate in power silo are no help to anyone. NS more so than most other FPS games require people to play their role in order to win. If people refuse to play their role, your team will lose. N00bs are out for one thing, their own enjoyment, which more often than not, is at the expense of the rest of the teams enjoyment. I should accept this and be happy that I am playing in a game that is being sabotaged by someoen that has no regard for the game and the rest of the people playing it? I don't think so.
i hate n00bs, cuz of their thickheaded personalities and their constant ramboing.
newbie - new to the game
n00b - new to the game but refuses to learn / listen
I'd like to add one:
llama / lamer - one not new to the game but tries to intentionally spoil it for others for his own amusement. Thankfully I havn't seen too many of these.
Also once I was playing against one of those really skilled players who always goes marines. These annoy me to start with, simply because they just cling to one side of the game, but whenever he died he'd pipe up with some comment like "OMG how many bullets does it take to kill you" or "luck". Instead of congratulating them, he thought it was more important to keep his own ego inflated and justify those deaths. He was still killing a lot each round, so I took it upon myself to mock him with comments like "OMG I AM GOD HOW DID I DIE?". In response he just called me a "scrub", which he neglected to define. Maybe he read that "playing to win" article and misapplied the term, or maybe thats what he calls anyone who disagrees with him.
Ive played hl mods since the very first beta of CS. Ive played DoD, FA, FLF, TS,TFC, Sven Co-op, TO, ToD, VS, DMC, Riccochet, GW, and now NS.
Unless you have played any of these excelent mods you problably wont understand what those letters stand for.
CS (the origional cool CS) DoD, and NS are my 3 specialties. I also play BF1942, JK2, UT, Q3 VietCong, and Devestation online too.
And all this time. I have never once EVER read the game manual. I see the game screen shots, download/install the game, set my controls and screen name and off I go straight into a server.
Im not directly accusing anyone here but IMO I would not be afraid to say that many of you people did not read the manual either (exeption maybe that little slide show with the new NS install file) when you first got the game.
Perhaps after you played for a while you went back into the forums or what not and looked around for info,
But if you are like me (and im sure many of you are) waiting to play NS, when you finished the download you where like a 5 year old running down the stairs at 6AM in the morning with this parents struggling along with the video camera to see what Santa had brought him Christmas Day. Screw the manual I want to PLAY!
Now When i did get into my first NS game, or any game for that matter, I didnt know anything, and i knew that. I went marines automatically, becasue the marines had the well known FPS look to it. From there I just followed everyone else and learned things on my own. I didnt try to jump right into the comm chair or whine about getting shot gun I just learned for my self. In my case I was one of the first NS players so I was in a server where no one knew anything lol. But really, when you guys say READ THE MANUAL YOU F00l! Ask youself if you read it first thing after the install your self. There are probably many who did, but Im also sure many of you who say you did in the game servers probably didnt either.
it takes 3 seconds to use your voice comm to awnser the question and say "anything else i can help you with?"
i think its great helping newbes, then they wont become n00bs
n00bs come into existance BECAUSE of people like you who bashed them for opening their mouth...
they get bashed for asking questions, that they think that everyone is just mean and that they should not listen to them
so please, just take 5 seconds of your timeand help a newbe steer away from the path of n00b

1) i was on these forums 2 weeks before i played NS. Thats a good enough tutorial eh? and i read the manual.
2) sorry Catpoker, but we arent talking about the "newbies" we are talking about the people who are too lazy to learn the game.
it didnt take 5 seconds today (read meh post!) it was an hour of non-stop questioning, all of which could of been solved if he had taken the time to learn about it. I guess i am biased, as i took the time to find out as much as i could, but it annoys me when people dont bother and wonder why they get looked down upon.
They may not have voice
They may not know HOW to play
OR they may just be annoyed by the above spam.
SO.
Ask politely and the chances are the guy will do as you say or change class... dont spam insults at the guy... ask politely.
If a commander is dropping IPs like mad or turrets or summat... ASK him if he is new or needs a hand.
Me and a few guys won a game with a comm who had no clue as to what to do... we told him "put this here" and "upgrade this" and we won - its not bout the comm... its about the team and communication. Not accusing and being self-righteous.
Yes, the counter arguement is.. Why should someone who is incompetant (either on purpose, or by mistake) be allowed to have fun, while the rest of the players (who also want to have fun) have less fun because another player ruined it..
My two cents, there should be more newbie friendly servers... There should be more N00B, cheats/hacks etc servers being used... The rest of us fit someplace else..

Super Mario Brothers.. Nice... Been replaying Legend of Zelda recently much fun....
Trying to convince others that n00b is derogatory and newbie is not is like trying to convince people that "white trash" is derogatory and "redneck" isn't. Or that it's ok to say "male genitalia" but not ok to say "phallus." Who are we kidding?
edit: apparently the proper medical name for "male genitalia" is censored. i guess we wouldn't want to corrupt the minds with such violence-inducing names.
They're the same thing, and both are used as to belittle those who were not "in-the-know" to catch onto the NS bandwagon when it came out. Damn elitist beliefs. I don't even know why I bother trying to argue, as clearly you are firmly entrenched in the filthy subculture you actually believe exists and separates one term from the other "l33ticized" version.
Outside of a gaming context and in terms of a historical reference to the development of the internet (namely IRC and BBS's), "newbie" wouldn't be so bad, but this thread is full of people trying to justify their own elitist needs.
You try admining a server where people who refuse to play as a team try and ruin it for everyone else. Many people instantly call people n00bs, I am not one of them. Differentiating between n00b and newbie allows for quicker conversation in game. If a person is asking questions that seem retarded, argues about the answers, tells you you are wrong and proceeds to mess up the game, it is easier to say "he's a n00b" than to type "the person in question here, while appearing to be a newbie, is actually intentionally acting contrary to the game model and dilberately messing up the other 20 people trying to have a good time". I have spent entire games teaching newbie gorges and commanders the ropes and find your knee jerk generalisation just as offensive as you percieve the n00b/newbie arguement.
<!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
I disagree. Here's a post that'll show you the difference between a "n00b" and a "newbie".
<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=30079' target='_blank'>Linkie</a>
A "n00b" is an uncooperative, annoying, idiot who refuses to learn about the game and how to play it. A "newbie" is simply a player new to the game, trying to figure out what he's doing.
