I have tried whats listed in forum/faq
I have tried re-installing and starting the game through hl and the start menu and it still says my game is not installed. I can start and play in a lan game, but I cant connect to the online servers due to it saying the game is not installed. I have also tried making a shortcut with C:\sierra\Half-Life\hl.exe -console -game ns, but that doesnt work. I also tried connect to 128.194.11.209 but it keeps saying all the slots are full. My computer is well above the requirements and is running XP. Like I said everything works I just cant connect to servers online. Also, in the custom game section all the mods that I have installed and say they are installed the install option is greyed out except ns. Also I try clicking on the install button and it says cant open ns/ folder. The game looks sweet, but this is really annoying can anyone help.

Have you tried conecting via Gamespy3D or The All seeing Eye? People who have described your problem and followed your steps have usually had beter luck when they bypassed the HL MP components completely and went for the throat with free 3rd-party add-ons like these:
http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/ - ASE
http://www.gamespy3d.com/ - Gamespy3D
If you wana be minimalistic use ASE, very clean, low over head, and unbelievably powerful (thats the point of ussing cmd line more power)
ASE gives you filter choices like:
Where the server is located
Ping
# players (full empty xxx players)
version of game
and any variable (modle enforcement, FF on/off, etc etc etc etc)
stuff that can't be done through HL or GS
