<div class="IPBDescription">The paen of 56k.</div> I've been downgraded from 512k ADSL to 56k dialup, it hurts like you wouldn't believe.
Anyhoo, online gaming is currently next to impossible. I get 400+ pings ingame (NS) and I'm lagging around like a bad iceskater.
I'm wondering if anyone's got any reccomendations as to what I can set my rate, cl_cmdrate and cmd_update rate to get my NS to run a little smoother?
There're a ton of tutes out there for setting it up for CS but I'm assuming NS' requirements would be pretty different.
Thanks in advance.

next, get <a href='http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/' target='_blank'>ASE</a> try and tweak out what servers you are connecting to (your region, good pings etc etc etc)
now go check out MonsE's thread in off topic for tweaking HL it might help out some <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
oh, and 400 ping aint that bad <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> (I curently can't play HL at my college due to idiots on Kazaa and E-Donky)

400 ping _IS_ bad. Even for a fittysix kay modem 400 ms is a lot of lag. I've played NS on dialup with 120-150ish ping, consistantly for a week. It requires that you connect to a nearby server. It also requires of you to have a pristine line/noise quality. That you can help on by making sure all telecoms equipment is UNPLUGGED when you game. You should also ensure that your phone cable isnt longer than 2 meters. If it is, you should try and get some insulated cable made.
Lastly you might want top optimize your modem for gaming. This means disabling hardware compression, let the computer do that. Also disable error retransmission protocols. Games have their own error protocols, we dont need no steenkin modem to interfere.
Also pay attention to at what speeds you connect. if you see a huge variation then try and lower your connection speed by using the S-registers. Oh, and make sure your Serial port rate is higher than your modem BPS rate.
I think I've run out of ideas now.
Thus NS to
It's all the same netcode
cl_cmdrate 22
cl_updaterate 22
rate 4500
cl_cmdrate 22
cl_updaterate 22
rate 4500 <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Unless your download and upload speeds are like 45kb, then im sure ur settings work fine Vadakill....
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The best thing for 56kers is to put your rate at 2500 (in console type rate 2500) and make your cl_cmdrate 10 and your cl_updaterate 10 (by typing cl_cmdrate 10, etc). (The default cmdrates for 56kers is 30 for cmdrate, and 20 for updaterate). Also, when your cmd and update rates are at 10, your mic. skips. So what you could do is make a script where when you hit a certain key ("-" for example), it will put ur cmdrates back to normal, so you can talk on the mic, and when your done talking, hit - again so your ping is reduced. I can make you one if you want...rock on!<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I would still go with that above... p.s.....dont go higher than 3500 for ur rate.

Umm... not quite.
Flayra's done some serious tweakaging to the HL netcode.
The cable that connects my modem to the wall is about 5 metres long. What price would I be looking for if I were to go the shielded cable route? My computer cannot be moved closer either.
