DSL hasn't improved my lag
I got DSL today, and reinstalled NS so my confige would come up with the correct settings. The only problem is I am still hovering at about 300-400 ping. It is a 700something download 100something upload. I dont' remember. Specs:
XPHome
512ram
60Gig
Althon1700
GeForce 2
If theres anything else you might need to know about my comp just say so. I can't figure out why my ping isn't getting any better.

Bandwidth - this is the amount of data that can be sent down your connection per second. It's like the width of a river, the wider the river the more water can flow at any one time.
Connection Speed - this is the time it takes for data to be sent through a unit length of "wirering". This is like the speed a river flows out, with a steeper river the water will flow faster.
So what this means is that DSL, which uses standard phone cables, while being able to provide greater bandwidth, can not increase the speed of your connection (the speed of electricity down a copper wire) (actually about 3 inches an hour, but that doesnt apply here ) Anyway with a digical optical connection, the data can be sent at the speed of light (actually cause of all the curves in the optical fibers its about 1/3 the speed of light, eitherway its very fast). So you will only get a reduction in ping by upgrading your connection to one which uses some form of optical transmission.

Don't you mean like 3 inches a sec ?
hehe
Anyway I got DSL and I get pings of like 20 so DSL DOES improve it
And Seraph, FPS has nothing to do with ping
cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 30
rate 6000
I have DSL at home, and cable at my dorm. Those settings work flawlessly for both. The other question is, are you sure you are connecting to a server that isn't lagging in the first place? With NS 1.04 games with over 20-24 people will tax the CPU of the server which shows up as lag. Don't go by what the scoreboard tells you, type net_graph 1 in the console to get the real ping of the connection.
Jabba, very informative. Do you work with computers proffesionally?

No that rate at which the electrons move is incredibly slow, they just push all of the electrons in front of them.
heres the proof - (theres loads of other sites with this just search for "speed of electricity).
http://www.amasci.com/miscon/speed.html
Your gettting pings of 20 because the server is near by, or you are close to a relay that changes over to an optical line.
So what you mean is that to move the thousands of inches to the server it would take like 2 months ?
hehe
I KNOW my connection aint THAT slow...
What happens is each electron pushes of each other electron (-/- replusion), this effect travels very quickly.
Electricity is very much like a tube full of water, when u add more water, water comes out the other end almost instantly.
But then that would be the stuff I sent 4 years ago...
hehe
Silly
