I don't get why people bicker so much as to what's the best engine. Back "in the day" people used to argue over what game was best (Remembers Duke3d verses Quake, one had technology, the other had gameplay).
As far as any of us know, NS won't be ported to another engine. Stop asking.
Crytek's engine looks impressive, Origi3d's engine looks kinda impressive too. But Half-Life works fine. It's quick, doesn't look +too+ bad, and anyone can play it. Weather you have a puny little P2 233 or a Athalon 3ghz, it makes no difference, you still get decent framerates.
You can't attack or defend an engine that you've not played, be it Crytek's, Doom's or any other engine. We +KNOW+ Half-Life works, and as i said before, it isn't that bad. In terms of performance and longevity (come on, 5 years old and we're +still+ using it). Besides, we're all getting arsey about the devs taking a while to release the holy 1.1. But if that was on a new engine (say Unreal Warfare etc) How long would a single marine model take to update? Or maybe new weapon models. The amount of work necissary is unbelievably more than on HL. And come on, we're not playing NS strictly for the graphics. Are we? Also new technology would alienate us people without top spec machines, and i'm sure that the dev's don't want to cut a chunk out of their fans would they?
As for mod scenes, Quake had a pretty big and thriving mod scene which lasted a few years. It's a great thing to have and be part of, and straying from Half-Life would mean giving up a good deal of it.
And a final note on DooM 3. The engine looks great, but will the game be fun in the slightest?
<b>I don't care if there is 'Das Uberengine' somewhere out there</b>
Everybody is free to base his work on the technology he prefers. For my part, I will stick with the source engine, even if it's not 'perfect' I am confident it will be more than sufficient to do the job I had in mind.
Half-Life 2 will be the proving ground for the source engine, as will Far Cry for the Crytek Engine. There's no 'evidence' if any of these 2 games will be as good as they boast to be.
Yet you can be sure if Half-Life fans had to choose between Far Cry and Half-Life 2, they certainly wouldn't stick with Far Cry. At least I wouldn't.
Like has been stated before, graphics aren't everything. You also have to look at ease of use, scalability, portability, etc. And just because one engine is better in a certain way, doesn't mean its the best in all ways.
so about that hl2 sdk, i recall on the gamespot video them talking about how they were going to hold a mod conference and teach everyone the new engine, and give out the sdk before the game hits the market.
Okay, do not compare Far Cry with Half-Life. I do not care about the pretty trees and water, Half-Life is one of the best games ever produced for the PC and will be remembered as a classic forever. The cry engine has some nice looking outdoor environments, but take away the trees and you've got Halo's outdoor environments. Oh, and judging from all the Far Cry information on that site, it will be another running gun unrealistic game of G.I. Joe looking mercs chasing you for no reason so you can carry some cool guns (which aren't aligned with the crosshairs) and look at some nice trees. The size of the environments is not very impressive, considering Battlefield 1942, Halo, and Unreal 2. I may be overestimating the crappiness of this game, but ever since I bought SoF2 I've started to hate every "realistic" FPS where you fight other humans. I lost $40 for that piece of ****. I know it's not on PC yet, but Halo is better than any other single-player game I've ever played, except Half-Life. And they're two completely different styles. Urgh. Games like Far Cry make me sick, and the indoor environments are hideous. They look like AvP2 but with uninteresting locales. Trapped on a beatiful Pacific island with G.I. Joes chasing you. Ah, I love it...

but its garunte'd to kill your system -.- some radeon 9,700 users claim they only get like 20 fps..ive heard this from the people that have the warez version or something. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> i played the ALPHA on my geforce4 mx440(pretty much a geforce2) and it ran surprisingly well. not GREAT of course, but i got 30+ fps walking around, and then upon firing it dropped into the 10 range. however this was a completely unoptimized alpha. i'm pretty sure doom 3 will be running fine on high end systems with radeons and geforce FX's. remember when quake 3 first came out? only the newest and best video cards could run that... i think they were voodoo 3 at the time. but thats what id's new games do, they push the limits of hardware so we have to go out and buy more. ID software is a hardware vendors dream come true.
id also like to add that crytek engine is extremely impressive. id say its on par with doom3 and hl2 engines, and the modability looks great. ive never seen any other engine that could do expansive outdoors areas like that. i think doom 3 will be based mainly indoors, but i suppose we could be surprised. hl2 will have some outdoor areas, but entire islands like that? if you've read anything on hl2 youd know they will be implementing that same loading technique from halflife in order to handle large areas. so yeah, its not gonna be on par with this crytek thing.
the realistic physics and all that seem to be standard in games nowadays.
anyways, im looking most forward to some HALO PC mods! i havent found a game yet that is as much fun to drive around vehicles in as halo, although crytek did have some nice physics on those jeeps... but who knows how they drive.
Halo for PC is gonna be sweet. Great game and engine together. Some how my anticipation level for Halo is higher than Doom 3. Don't have the resources to get my machine upgraded.
By the way the 20 FPS thing is for the leaked version of the Doom 3 alpha build last year. The FPS is much better now. Check out my post in Off Topics.

I have heard of ALL of those and more. But you need to realize that 1. Unreal2 is no where near how good this engine is. 2. DOOM3 is VERY good looking. BUT! the maps with those details you have seen are smaller than ONE room. 3. Serious Sam2 is outdated incomparison to this engine. 4. HL2 ! ha! Im not even going to add a remark to that. 5. This engine BLOWS all those engines out of the water. If you were to read the feature list and watch the demo you would realize this.
However, you must realize that although Half-life has a VERY large MOD community, the engine is older than most people`s computers. In addition, the only reason the Half-life engine is still used is because of all the 11-20+ year olds out there who don`t keep up with the news therefore think that if this game is made on the Half-Life engine, then it`s gotta be the NEWEST and BEST gfx.
Although one thing I wana make clear here is that I`m not trying to open your eyes, I am only trying to flash a light at your closed eyes so you know that there is a light out there. (and its crytek hehe j/k). <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> Dude, crytek has been in development for almost as long as half life has been out and isnt anymore impressive than any other next gen engine.<a href='http://www.stalker-game.com/index_eng.html' target='_blank'>The Stalker engine</a> sports large and detalied landscapes also...
1. Unreal 2 is out now and we can take advantage of it...Games with crytek are years off, and low-end target comps are much higher. 2, For some reason Doom 3 has never really impressed me so...no comment. 3. Serious Sam 2 isnt out, the engine is just about to go alpha...so WTH are you talking about? 4. HL2 will run on a low end system crytek couldnt dream of touching and will have reliable net code for sure, where as we can only speculate on cryteks features. 5. Ive read the feature list and watched the demo...this engine boasts all the same crap that every other next gen engine boasts...if youd take the time to do some research , you'd realize this. Knowing that a good percentage of your fanbase will be running low-end specs will keep cry-tek out of the mod loop for a while (even after we wait a year and a half to see a game made with the engine), until enough people are running machines capable of handling the engine. Its a damn good engine, one of the better next gen engines I'm keeping my eye on, but dont be a fan-boi. You act like these guys took you out to pizza and bribed you or something. Your last comment is incredibly ironic, scince youve obviously closed your eyes to anything but crytek. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Style over content.... Which do you choose?
For doom3? style.
