<div class="IPBDescription">Win XP compatibility</div> Hi,

I right now use Win 98 and am planning to install Win XP, but before I do that I need to know if Win XP works well with HL and NS because that is the only game I play right at the moment :-)
So if you have win Xp can you let me know if it works great or no.

My config is: Athlon 2400+ 256 DDRAM 2700 Geforce 4 Ti 4200

Thanks in advance,

Ender the Xenocide

    Well you've got a better processor and graphics card than me and I can get constant 99fps on maximum resolution openGL with WinXP/NS, so you should be OK... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    yes but also after installing and updating what you need to, go check out my <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=28768' target='_blank'>Complete VSYNC/FPS guide</a> as you WILL have issues with you monitor refresh rate which are easily overcome (though you won't necessarily know about them, go read for more info!!!)

    Other than that, go for it, but do get rid of all that horrible big fluffy buttons-teletubby land stuff it comes with. There's also some dodgy "Let other people hack my computer" services to disable too. Mine now looks like 98/2k and runs a damn sight quicker than most others I've seen with the ghastly big green buttons and horrible "Welcome, newbie, to WINDOWS, this is all very plastic and nice" theme they've gone with.

    Win XP works fine. IF not better than 98 for gamming.

    WINXP is ok for gaming. even though it crashes a lot (not when playing games luckily <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->) but it is very nice. also remember to get the refresh rate fix in Roob's guide

    Just remember, our wonderful Windows sucks up RAM like nerds suck up books on programming. Quickly, with Cheetos and caffeine.

    Yeah, i'd recommend more ram, but what do i know... whenever i try to minimize, halflife crashes.

    You have much more than what you need to play NS with a decent framerate.

    I don't know about the rest of you, but I had an awful time installing HL on my XP machine. For whatever reason, it didn't bother to copy a bunch of files during the install. Fortunately, I also have a 98 machine, and I ganked the missing files from it.

    The gist of XP and gaming: either the game will work great or not at all. Lots of things are incompatible with XP (even some things that work in 2000). Also, you may have to change your paging file settings to prevent XP from trying to do everything from the HD and leave your ram empty, because it seems to think it's a good idea. Search the web for paging file tweaks and you'll find the fixes.

    The only thing I would add is that windowsXP and audigy sound cards hate each other and will make your gaming unpleasant at the most inconvenient times possible. I'm not sure what to do other than not use an audigy card.

    I solve this problem by providing Windows with 768MB of ram <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    As many an other, id suggest 512mb of ram MINIMUM.
    XP tends to be jerky and picky at 256 and even a monster of a machine will slow down.
    Ram is cheap anyway, stick another 256 in there (remember: more = better!).
    Youll be fine <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The biggest difference for me when I went from 2000 to XP was mouse performance. Heres a link to a great site that explains how to fix the different XP performance:

    I have not experienced very many games not working in XP. The only one that I couldn't get to work is the original Command and Conquer.
    Halflife works great on XP, if you don't believe me just try outsniping me in CS or FA <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I use winxp with almost the exact same setup (except I have a P4 instead of athlon) and it runs nice and smooth, as it should. Of course, like these guys have said, XP eats ram like a bad habit, so I use Maxmem to clear it up before I play. Thankfully I'm getting another 512 DDR333 in a few days, so that should solve my memory problems.
