Req : Starship Troopers

<div class="IPBDescription">erm yeh check it out :P</div> hi, i am an avid starship fan and i have an idea...

now it may not be MUCH of an idea... but it is a start.. how about an outside map? the maps on NS are all on various ships,installations planets etc.. but how about an outdoors map....

like the one in the END of starship troopers


the marines have that funky installation and they use that... this wouldnt be your standard NS map this would take alot more it is mainly a 'kill or be killed' map.. where you blaster the hell out of aliens... and my suggestion is..

make it so they can evolve into lerks straight away if they want.. which would simulate the flyers... and then the second hive would be a midway point which COULD be accessible by marines if they pushed out... marines have around 6 res points in theyre base.. 2 towers with can be loaded with god knows what...

the only way to get out of the installation for the marines is to get through the wall now the wall is blocked up so the kharra of rather the 'bug infestation' would have to advance to a point where they can take the wall out... then the real battle can ensue... now this map wouldnt be easy by any means and would need alot of testing... but it could work very well...

just think about it... really dig down use your emotions... use your dreams... it COULD be superb.

    based on the backstory alone, outside maps can't be done. The commander uses the nano-webs built into the ship to "drop" buildings for his marines. Outside it doesn't work, just based on the fact that there are no nano-webs. If you really want to deviate from the storyline, it could be done, and might be a great idea, but I don't know how official it'll become.

    Apart from that NS is not designed for outside areas and large halls.
    You are #12 with the idea of making a new thread for an outside area map.

    The Commander story is ****... you can come up with a story that tells how radioactive locking grids are used to drop the buildings or whatever, you can come up with everything, just like they do on startrek ( <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> ) but the problem is: gameplay, because the skulks must be able to attack the marines from close range...

    well deviating from the original 'story' wouldnt be much of a problem bearing in mind effectively you are recreating a different story.. and olli i will check that out.. i thought it was a unique idea.. maybe not..

    Ok, this is bothering me quite alot. Why the f*** would story matter on a custom map, or even atmosphere. I someone wants to map their own idea it is their problem. Basically the only reason outdoor maps won't work in ns is beacaus a skulk can't climp on clip brushes, and sky's are covered by them. Wouldn't it also look really stupid if a lerk would reach the roof outside, yes, yes it would. And above all else, skulks suck in open spaces, jp, are unstoppable, lerks arn't bad, and ha hmg are basically useless.

    But sure this idea has been thought of before, probably even by someone who knows about mapping. Although outdoor maps have been suggested, if you look at the mapping forum page, you can see at the very bottom right corner, there is a box, where you can type (I think it sais search next to it, or mapy above it), write outdoor in that box and then press enter.

    i didnt search because i presumed (wrongly i may add) that it was a unique idea and i figured it wouldnt have been searched for before...

    okay, now your post is bothering me "quite alot." Basically I said, this deviates from the storyline, but it could be a great idea, but it probably will never become official. Please read the entire post before jumping all over someone. I always assume that mappers would want their maps to at least have the chance of someday being official. Funmaps are usually done to learn the mapping proccess or to alleviate boredom with the currently played maps. If the goal here is to have a funmap, and never make it official, then I think it could be a great idea. He didn't sound like he was looking for a funmap, but was serious in his idea, which is why I stated how it deviates.

    Personally, I think the NS team should finish the backstory to allow for open-air maps to fit, since this idea HAS been brought up numerous times (I think I was one of the first, back in early December). So basically, tseepra, don't flame (which is what you did, I've had my posts deleted for way less), and [WOLF], if you are passionate about the idea, modify it, and try to team up with a good mapper. I'd say that this can be done (still deviating from the backstory), if you added enough rocks, maybe made it into more of a tight ravine than an open air valley. Or even do just a little bit above ground, and the rest below. Just think about it, and try to balance your ideas with the gameplay.
