<div class="IPBDescription">to me...</div> Just what a particle physics engine is?

I've been wandering what one is for ages, and I am completly confused.

When answering please try to keep your answers sort, i unfortunatly have a short attention span <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

You can use scientific mum-bo-jumbo if you want, I have quite a good understanding of the sciences.

Well I'm no genius, but I think particles are basically 3D sprites. A sprite being a stationary 2D object that the game uses to uhh, make something look like something. Y'know, smoke puffs, phase gate globey jobs -- those are, for the most part, all particles.

HL doesn't come standard with a particle system, so coding one in is sort of a "big deal".

    I define it as:

A point of specified radiance and radiance radius which has a specified lifespan and path which is either pre determined or calculated according to the rules of physics programmed into the game.

so..... globby things that float around and look pretty! right?

    From what I understand, yes.

Perhaps someone who has worked with a particle engine could elaborate a little more.

Particle engine is the program used to "produce" the particles, or sprites in the game HL. If you have a crappy Video card and you play CS and throw a smoke nade, youll see about 13917409817981 blocks of grey, thsoe are particles. And the engine simple produces those particles.

Or i could be completely wrong and influencing you in teh wrong way.

Pretty sure CS smoke grenades are drawn as sprites.

Well, you get the idea. Only used as a ... pivot for the idea, so he has a slight clue. Particles and Sprites are close to teh same....right?
  • FireStormFireStorm Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7390Members
Not really. Sprites are drawn in the engine and particles in the client dll.
The speites use more CPU time and using a lot of them at a time drops your fps.

ok.....so its just a fancy sprite engine?
  • FireStormFireStorm Join Date: 2002-11-06 Member: 7390Members
Well not exaclty because these sprites are in a group and they're linked.

*steals a line from the 10 reasons I hate star trek thread*

You see its all very simple. You reverse the polarity of the hyper tension plasma manafold, hit it with gamma rays, wait for the Kool-Aid man to come busting through the walls causing a loop in the space-time continuum, then stab yourself with shards from a broken Deer Hunter CD.

    fancy sprite engine then.
