100 Ping, Come Back An Hour Later

and my ping is 500???
I was playing NS a few days ago and I had a fine ping of about 100. Later that day I began playing and my ping jumped to an average of 400-500. These are the same servers and everything. I know it isn't server side because no matter what server I go to I have the same problem. Anyone got any ideas as to why it suddenly changed?

Specs: Athlon 1700
Windows XP home
Geforce 2 (don't be dissing on the card I run at 99fps no matter what my ping is)
512DDR ram
60gig harddrive

I am getting really ****, I tried reinstalling NS but it didn't work. It seems like that even made it worse :O

Have you contact your service provider?

I don't think that it is because of my modem/isp. I ran a connection test (a random one so perhaps it isn't at all accurate) that said I was running at about 500kb/s. A different test said I was running at 275 Kb/s. Either way, this still doesn't justify a 400-500 ping. Any other ideas?

Well, one thing to remember, storage capacity/speed has no relation to information relay. For example, DirecTV flaunts their blazing "fast" downloads. And, in part, its true. Amazing download speeds, Sattelite is High bandwidth===>High Latency (2000-4000MS Average) Which is crap for gaming. Also, by modem Im assuming CABLE modem. Ive had similar problems. Nothing short of a power-cycle of the modem and reboot didnt fix. Also, you might want to try a renew/release all on your ipconfig if these do NOT fix it, contact your ISP for chits and giggles because sometimes, they DO make mistakes. For example mine thought it would be cool to charge me for 2 extra addresses. Never hurts to harass. They pay their techs for more than donut consumption.

PS: If you need more help I can be reached on AIM (CommieWithAGun) or MSN (Omni_Blake@hotmail.com) Hope it works!

Your connection speed is not the same thing than your ping...

It's possible that a relay server is down...

It's prolly just that your first game was in some odd hour when people are at school and work ( slacker ! hehe )
And the second one was when there's a lot more traffic going on

actually, I had been playing consistently at just above 100ping. For some reason it jumped up and I found no change even when playing at 4 in the morning. I tried ipconfig /renew and /release. That didn't seem to help. I'm running DSL. If a relay server went down, as someone suggested, how long would it take before it went back up?

Lots of people have problems with DSL, mainly the ISP load is to much and therfore you all slow down, the exchange will be full thats all, im lucky i have a whole 50gb line to myself, shame im only on a 512k modem tho

Yeah right on the end of a semi saturated cable network, fortuately my isp garrentee my 150kps bandwidth, plus its digital optical right after it reaches the modem which means i get really low pings.

I would really suggest contacting your isp.

Im lost... I came back today to play a round of NS so slow it rivals even the mighty 56/gey.

When I started playing, however, I had a ping of about 100 again. So, i essentially have no idea of why my ping changes for a week and then changes back. Anyone know why?

    (The plot thickens).

Does anyone here use verizon? Thats my ISP and for some reason my average ping is back up to 600. The strange thing is that I have one server that gives me a ping of about 70, but other than that there isn't one under 500. If other people do have, or have had this problem with verizon could you please tell me what you did about it. I think I'm going to call them about the incosistency in my service.

EDIT: I just spent the last 2 hours with Timothy on the Verizon Online Support Center (I swear to god they just use bots and not real people).

After two hours of nothing we accomplished two things: 1) He managed to "break" some program that ended up sending me the same diagnostic file (I think I counted something in the area of) 24 times. TWENTY FOUR!!!

    2) He said that it is not a verizon problem and I should contact the SERVER (NO PLURAL). I informed him that there are actually 400 servers and he simply said that I am not running slow.

Lesson learned: Verizon may work for some, but if it doesn't for you then theyr costumer service sucks and you might as well cancel.
    ____________________________________________________

That was in the FIRST 2 hour session of this two part episode. In the SECOND two hours of my FOUR, yes 4 hour sesion with the BOT Timothy we established that ALIENS are tampering with my internet connection. BECAUSE THAT was the only explanation for why I actually got better performance out of a 56/gey modem than I did out of my DSL 50% of the time.

And the AUTOMATIC SOLUTION DIAGNOSTIC (which is basically just a remote assistance renew/release command) CLOCK is now up to 47 requests and counting.

His ONLY suggestion was to contact ALL 400 servers and ask them why I was getting a bad ping (Although I wasn't allowed to use the word "ping" because we just can't trust measurements like that. I had to use the word "slowness.")

I know this thread is probly gonna get shut down soon. The only reason I posted all this was because I figured if you're any person other than me this whole thing probly seems funny as hell. Shame on you!

The whether for today is partly cloudy with a chance of doom. My ping has been 100 for a few days and it looks like it may stay that way (ahh, beurocracy at work). Maybe bitching to your isp for a while does do some good after all.

For the most part, I find computers don't always have do to with the ping.
For example, my old computer ran a celeron at 700 mhz, no video card, no sound card, Windows ME and a no name HD. I got 100 ping average... and 30-50 fps.
On my new compie, which is Athalon XP running at 1.8 ghz, WinXP pro with a Radeon 9500 pro, and some kind of HD... Probably still no name.. Well, I still get 100 ping and about 72 fps, but thats only because I have a limiter because as soon as I take it off and get into some action my fps goes through the roof and I lag.. I'll go trial and error one day to find the best setting
I really can't comment for the most part on WHY it slowed down, I would guess it has to do with the box or provider. Some times it might just be the server is bogged down by something (the owner of it uploading stuff, people downloading maps, not having a good reboot in a while)
some times it can just be the people on the server (NS doesn't seem to have this problem as much, but other mods like HLbumper cars will lag out completely if even one dial up person is on them)

As for Cable VS DSL, it all depends.
DSL runs at the same speed for most connections unless your in a dead area (think cell phones), where is Cable runs on area based hubs the last time I checked. The more people in your area with Cable, the slower it gets. Untill they install a new hub. If you get the new hub, good for you. You'll have good speed of a while.
Basicly, DSL is based on geography, Cable is based on population.
but then again, the last time I checked on this stuff was 5 years ago.
