Need Us Opinions On A Question Of Being A Rabbit

A matter of culture I guess.
I hope this hasnt been discussed 1001 times already, as I'm not an active user of the boards. Just, try and not to grill me if I'm posting this a thousand time

In the Euro NS community Drawviewmodel 0 is blocked on most servers or just frowned upon. Some public servers do not allow any speed-gaining bunnyhopping at all. Some ladder rules include a "no 'kill'".

When I watch US demos, which I do a lot to learn all your pretty little weaknesses so we can blatantly stick to them I see loads and loads of taken-to-perfection bunnyjumping that first made me go like "WT(F)? These guys have spent so much time practicing to exploit game mechanics? They got to use DVM 0 as well.." until I realized its just a question of view. So do the US clans find it acceptable, maybe even encourageable to BH? Mainly asking so I can tell my finnish team to get in shape at it again. It really does give one a huge advantage, you can pass distances at half the time you can without BH, when attacking or just traveling, and you can jump away from skulks endlessly as marine.

So asking out of curiosity, dont take this as a flame as I really dont mean it as one.

(also is it a problem in the US as well that all clanmatches between good clans end up marines always winning aliens always loosing unless a huge streak of luck happens to take place?)

How does one actually go about bunnyhopping in a game like NS?

Well... I'm NOT informed on this topic at all.. but I've heard that BH is an exploit, and frowned upon.. and hated... and ppl get kicked for it.... And I'm a US player. I've not joined a clan.. though I should.. as that would improve my skillz some.. however... I play on pubs alot.....

So, I really don't know what the answer is.. personally I'd say keep u're team away from BH... as it could lead to flames, etc...

Bunnyhopping is definately a "skill" I haven't mastered, but it IS considered an exploit. It's also an exploit that last I heard was being changed in 1.1. I'm realizing I didn't see it in the changelog, but that means nothing. CAL frowns upon it, and I guess that's the basis for most of what the general public thinks. I AM in a clan and I don't allow my members to bunnyhop.

I dont know about the rules for legue matches and such, but I play with a fair share of clanners on a public server and bunny hopping is pretty popular.

OK.. well.. now it's time to ask this VERY stupid question.....

Can someone define for me exactly what ius considered BH? I mean, I've got a sweet system, and I get 70+FPS (in DX mode, 60ish in OpenGL) so I don't have to release JP for a while...... I dunno if that's cosidered using an "exploit" or not... but regardless it's not BH... but I'm curious as to what the "real" definition is...

Bunnyhopping: using a loophole in the way Quake-based engines calculate velocity while turning to gain speed. The way I understand it, you gain a small amount of speed when you turn in the air. When you hit the ground, "friction" drops your speed back to default. However, if you continue jumping, it can't kick in and you retain your speed increase - repeat, and gain more speed, etc.

Bunnyhopping is impossible in NS 1.1, so there is no need to get your skills back up.

that is false coil. Backwards bhopping is in 1.1 as of now, just not forwards.

And it isn't considered as cheating or exploiting by any us ladder/tourney that i've heard of.

Easiest way to put it is that you strafe jump one way, then the other, then the other, etc. Watch the snakpak or the uubu first person demos from usa v. korea demos, gets you a good feel for what bunnyhopping is like.

And yeah it uses an oddity in the q2 engine to attain higher than normal speeds. In CAL, I dunno, regular bunnyhopping isn't really seen a great deal. Silent bunnyhopping (bunnyhopping while crouched) is definitely against the rules (in fact, a match my clan was in was the one that made them say explicitly "look, don't silent bhop or we'll have to toss that half to your opponent".

Long story short - most US clanners can do it. But, we don't, because it's against the rules and will soon be pointless anyways.

Oh! As to your other question, the one about is there a marine advantage in 1.04? Indeed there is. The high level matches tend to be ties.

Thanks to Kavasa, being the only person to give a sensible answer

BH (as I get it, I cant of course be 100% sure I'm right): Jumping so that one turns around in air/uses strafe and gains a huge speed advantage this way. One can BH faster than skulk runs. So if a skulk wants to reach a marine the skulk has to BH himself too.

Thing is, from what I've seen or heard, only the top US clans BH (I might be all wrong tho) and it does give a HUGE advantage. Actually, without BHing, I doubt there is much of a chance of ever beating v. good BHers who also know how to play. Well, in 1.04 that is.

And I cant see why backwards bunnyhopping is allowed in 1.1, just not forward BH. Sound sort of ridiculous to me. I thought marines walked backwards slowly for the exact reason of not being able to run away from skulks while shooting. Or is it just more difficult to remove backwards BH? Lets hope its just "as of now".

Anyway, since we'll hopefully have 1.1 in our hands sometime in the near future, its sorta pointless to continue this discussion anyway. Thanks for sheding some light to my dilemma.
