Yes I know another Planetside Topic =/
Well guys I am going to buy Planetside from EB today after school, and I was wondering which servers you all would be on. We should have our own little Natural-Selection TSA Marine Squad .

Frankly, I deleted all the Planetside Beta stuff from my computer. Good ideas, bad execution. I was just fed up, that was no longer a beta testing, it was a flamin' demo, as in going down in flames.

Conclusion:
Natural Selection > Planetside

It's like Tycho from Penny Arcade says: the $15 subscription fee isn't going to click with their target audience, FPS junkies.

I don't really belive in paying subscription fees for games when you already bought the game for about £50. Jus makes me wonder where all the money goes. I mean honestly do you think EA would be such a mega corp if it wasn't for its monthly game subscriptions?

I agree with everybody else here, I aint shelling out $15 a month for an FPS when I know I can play hundereds for free.

SBV, look at Blizzard. They run Battle.net for NO charge, they have dedicated servers (realms) for Diablo II & Expansion, they have WarCraft 3 servers and they offer it all for no charge.

It's just a rip-off to pay subscription for something I already bought.

me, I'll be gettin my Nova Sorceress so she can use an Occulus Orb.
• DubersDubers Pet Shop Boy Edinburgh, UK Join Date: 2002-07-25 Member: 998Members
Yeh but seriously the amount of money they make from the subscription fees will be $$$$$$$ more than they need to cover ther basic costs.

SBV-The theory for most of my friends is to wait a while--see if this promised great game is released, then buy it. The one who was pretty serious about trying it out said he'd wait till July and then see how PS is doing. If it still is as "uneventful" as it is now, he won't get it. I can agree with this and will probably wait for the price to drop (as opposed to waiting a few months). Knowing their policy, they won't be lowering the price, and I won't be going to any of the servers. I would suggest emerald, but it gets crowded&laggy. Pick a not-so-crowded server, play as TR, and have a good time. If you pick vanu, you're a fool; the NC lacks much use as well. Anyhoo, g/l, and have fun for a week or a month!

But the servers that hold that many people at once and the graphics are alot better so it needs much better machines, so on...

Absolutely fantastic idea, but I'm not gonna pay 15 bucks a month for it. If they could find a way to make it free I'd be more than willing to play.

• FinaFina Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3267Members
If they're going to charge you monthly to play, the least they can do is charge you 5 bucks for the CD.

I haven't seen any games out there that are worth paying a monthly fee to play. Look at games like Ragnarok Online which is in free beta. It's a fun game, and I wouldn't mind paying a one-time fee to buy the game, but it's not worth paying 15 bucks a month to play.

Let's look at Tribes 2. I bought it April 1st, 2001 for 50 bucks and still play it to this day. I've got my money's worth, and then some. If I had to pay 15 bucks a month to play Tribes 2, I'd be out over 300 bucks by now. Three hundred dollars. Man.

I would definaterly consider paying £1 a month. Think even if the only get 100,000 gamers thats £100,000 a month for until how long they decide to run the game on their servers. Thats more than plenty to be able to maintain servers and whatnot.

no, it probably wouldn't be. Servers are expensive, and 100000 users is a lot. You'd need a lot of software, or a guarantee those people will pay 1 pound for a long time, a VERY long time. Like at least 1 year, maybe 2. With 5 bucks a month, you get the server basically paid for, and lose money on the leasing of the servers. At 7, you're turning a profit after the initial investment is paid off. At 15.. pure profit, baby. FPS games drain servers, and many people refuse to play if it lags higher than 200. C'est la vie, it's their game, their choice.

At the time Planetside was shown at E3 (which was some years ago I belive) it was amazing. If the company would have distributed the game within a certain time of the E3 previews, I'm sure that game would be one of the best games of the year...but the fact that it just came out kinda messes everything up. There is so much competition right now *cough* HL2. Its graphics arn't exactly what I would call amazing anymore....but as long as its a fun game

I got Neocron, it was supposed to be the revolutionary MMORPG of the year.... it was.... rubbish. I paid $25 for 3 months worth, when I actually only played about 2-3 hours a day maximum... thats alot of my cash paying for the server when I'm not even on. From now on, there is no way in hell I'm paying to play.

SBV, you do realize that the Diablo II "Realm" servers host up to and including about...5000 games of Diablo at any given point, over 100k players present at any given point and it saves somewhere around 1 million characters. For free.

And why would they charge you monthly to play it, do they have whole teams working on the game 24/7? And the CD should be $5.
• UnknownUnknown Join Date: 2002-06-12 Member: 759Members
I'm not getting it mostly b/c I don't want to pay for a game after I already spent mass amounts of money just to install it. ($50 is mass amounts of money for me, a 17yr-old with no source of income except for the $15 a week for school lunches. ) Besides, my computer crashes (I get a "Windows has recovered from a device failure. Please close all programs and restart to restore full functuallity" error or something like that.) after I enter a warp gate. **** you Intel vid card.
