First of all, check your map for errors with Map -> Check for errors.
This could be done by clipping, vertex manipulation or just some weird error, Hammer tends to make every once in a while...
could it be something to do with brushes touching each other?

Bad Surface Extents during a compile is usually the result of a texture that has been scaled either too large or too small.
To check for common problems in your map, hit Alt-P.
If the problem dialog doesn't show the bad surface, hit Shift-A to turn on the texture tool and look for textures that have X or Y scaling factors above 10, below -10, or in between 0.01 and -0.01.
Tommy14 has put together an extensive collection of information on common errors including Bad Surface Extents on his website: http://www.slackiller.com/tommy14/errors.htm
I'd bookmark that and use it as a first place to look for problems--it's a pretty complete resource and you won't have to wait for a reply.
