Text Muting

<div class="IPBDescription">happening?</div> Originally, there was talk that Valve would do this or that Flay would add ns-specific text muting code if necessary. Was there ever a decision as to when (or if) text muting would happen?

BTW, my idea of text muting is similar voice muting except that a certain icon or place on the person's scoreboard name would be dedicated to text muting. So, a player could open up the scoreboard, find the player who is spamming annoying text messages, and then click on the text mute icon to toggle allowing their text messages to be displayed. If muted, any typed text such as say and say_team messages would not be displayed.

An alternative, easier to implement, version would be a simple console command that mutes text of people by their name. Something like "mute_text Racer" would text-mute Racer. This method could be extended to mute everyone that has "Racer" in their name. (un)mute_text or toggle_mute_text could be other available commands. It would also be nice to be able to use WON IDs to mute in case their name is hard to type - e.g. "mute_won 123456" would text mute the player with WON ID 123456.

A third alternative would be to simply text-mute anyone who is currently voice muted. If nothing else is implemeneted for ns 1.1, at least add this with the ability to turn off text muting with an option like "cl_textmute 0" or something.

cant think of to many times i would use it , dont get me wrong it is actualy a good idea , but it has some bugs that need to be ironed out , it might not be as easy as it seems , most servers have a swear filter so its normaly just people called you a nub whitch i find both funny/pathect , they might have somthing that you need to know later in the match , voice muting is as far as i think it needs to go

good idea none the less, for new players that can get hurt and put off by abuse

You have to remember, for every way a llama can abuse something, there is a llama ready to abuse it.

If you leave llamas the chance to spam something in chat you know one is going to do so.

Personally I would love to mute anyone with an actionsay script
ie... the scripts that say things like "i need ammo/health" when they use the menue to comm it in, or things like "i am under attack" "i am shooting bullets" "I am mindlesly jumping up and down" "comm build res" "comm build res" " comm build res" "give me equipment"...

    You get the idea.

the actionsay scripts are good as long as they arent spammed. anyways bot (back on topic... new phrase) i would see no use for this becuz sometimes the people that spam alot may actually....possiblly.... at one time tell you something important and then u would have them muted and wouldnt hear it.

I don't understand the argument that "the muted player might say something important" as a good reason to not implement text muting. Obviously, the exact same argument could be made for voice comm, but I don't see people argue that voice comm muting is bad or unnecessary. It should be the player's perogative to mute another, even if the muted player might say something important - especially if that muted player is being a jerk or spamming messages.

The flip side of the coin though: Getting constantly distracted by useless voice/text spam can get you killed.

If I were to release some sort of multiplayer/online game dealing with needless spam would be a priority.
