He means an equivelent to the Hazard course. Many people learn much better with a tutorial than with a manual or slideshow, and even those who would never dream of cracking a manual will often go through a tutorial if offered.
Last I heard, months ago, was that Merkaba (author of Hera) was working on one. No news has been had since.
As much as I hope, I feel it is unlikely. Much to my chagrin.
Honestly, most of the important stuff about ns can't be learned from a tutorial. You can learn to attack (some), and to move, but you can't learn the most important things, like the maps. You need to know how to get from one point to another to effectively play. More importantly, you need to know what areas of the maps are important to know where to go. As a commander, you can know exactly how to do everything, and know the maps, but the only way to learn to be a good commander is to actually do it. You have to play an actual game against real people to learn anything beyond the basics. You can learn pretty much all the basics in a single game just by joining and asking questions (at least on most servers).
way back in the early days (check November/December at the latest), there was talk about a tutorial map, and I believe someone was working on it, but gave up. I am doing HW and can't look this up, sorry.

If done well, it could teach people who aren't the manual reading type (I'm one of them <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->) at least the basics. Agreed, it wouldn't cover as much of the game as hazard courses for other mods but NS is a complex game and even the basics equate to a lot. It should eliminate most new players asking "How do I build things?" etc. and launch them straight into the fun of working as a team. A training map couldn't teach them where processing is but it could teach them about waypoints and such, and give hints like following teammates. There are probably a lot of things I've missed out but I believe a hazard course for NS could be useful in answering a lot of the frequently asked new player questions if it's done effectively. The only downsides I can see are: Download time + Development time/effort (Would be on-going as new NS versions are released to keep it relevant)
I was actulay thinking of asking this question myself, but it appears somone beat me to it... Yah, many of the basic tatics players need to know could be covered in a training type thing... the manual contains data, but that doesn't help you for getting a feal, for example of climbing a cealing or knowing how to strafe while biteing...
"Welcome to NS training. Evolve to a gorge by...." "Good! Now, see that hole in the ground with smoke coming up? Press the USE key on it till you have 80 res, then evolve to onos and rush the marine base."
"Congratulations! You have completed the NS Training for the alien race!"
Ugh if i could remember where the interview with Merkaba was I could quote him. He said it was very close to completion so we should see it in 1.1.... how well they teach commanders :\ hmmm i must ponder now bout how they teach people strats as comm.....
If theres anything that needs to be implemented into a hazard course, its how to be an effective Com. I mean Im comfterable with every role in the game except com, because if you do bad, you get ridiculed.

Actually, to quote the titles.txt in the NS folder (remember, never edit it!): <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Welcome to Natural Selection Training.

TutWelcomeAlienTraining { You've chosen Alien training. Here you will learn how to spread your influence throughout the galaxy, and obliterate the human oppressors. } <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Well, this means that there must've been <i>some</i> kind of tutorial. The titles.txt has a lot of leftover things--will this be changed in 1.1? They have the friggin' nuke stuff in there "Nuke is arming! Stay here and guard it!", and "You killed an Alien! You get one resource point..." or something like that.

hmmm im gonna make a training level for ns now.. aint that hard.. maybe like an obstacle course..
Will take about a week.. but only because u are so cute SilentMurderer.. and because ur in my clan..
So the map will be almost lika a readyroom where u can select alien or marine and then for example aliens have 5 doors.. gorge,skulk,lerk... and so on.. and with some easy help messages like approach the res node and build a res tower and so on..

Visualises gorge with training wheels strapped to his rear, waddling down hallway. hehe

It wasn't released with 1.0 because it would delay it's release.
Therefore I'm 80% sure that 1.1 could come with a training level

Yep thats what all hazard courses are.......
