<div class="IPBDescription">is there such a thing?</div> I have decided with a friend to set up a good UK server, I have plenty of admin experience, both with OS's and HL. I would also like the server to run a couple of smallish database driven websites and I need/want console access to it. I've run google searches and searched this forum but have yet to find anything much.
So a simple question or two,
<ul>
<li>Who do you use (and are they good)?
<li>Who have you heard that is good?
<li>How much and where?
</ul>
Oh, and on the off chance that anyone reading runs a server hosting company please contact me.

I also wanted to do some other stuff (like host my website off my dsl line!). Someone out there must have seen a solution for me ?
They aint cheap though, but you get what you pay for. Hmm just read your subject (good cheap <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->), good and cheap means going for a low player server that won't be dedicated.
AMD XP 2000
512 MB
40 GB
unlimeted traffic
but u only alowed to run a gameserver on it and minium contract for 6 months.
or 125 setup and 110 a month

125 pound a month!?!?
WHOA! Thats like $150+ bucks a month right? Are all hosting servers that expensive in the UK?
any one else?
Everything is expensive in the UK. From Big Mac's to dedicated servers. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Creep.

'cmon lets have a few more names at least - forget cheap, who's the best?
Those are the guys we use at work (http://www.tsorg.com) - very good/professional etc, based in leeds in the uk.
Dedicated servers from £85/month
co-loc from £40
Send them an email and see what they can do for you. I've had no problems in my dealings.
I hope that helps.
I have just recently been pointed towards UK2, they have a 2.4ghz P4 with 40gb hdd and 512mb ram for £40/month, with root access, rh8.0 and 1000Gb/yr bandwidth limit (thats 80gb/month). This sounds ideal and reading about their network it should be fine for a game server...
Does anyonehave experience of UK2 ?
And how many players could I run on such a PC ? I would imagine that 32 should be fine if not now then by the time 1.1 arrives ?
Ive Played on The UK2 CS Servers and i think they are very good and not laggy (which coming from a 56k is high praise).
Im Supprised UK2 Havn't Started aloada UK2 Natural Selection Servers, they have over 200 CS ones <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Are you dedicated server suitable to be used as a games server in addition to running web servers?
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> the P4's are the RaQ4 is not.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> (well duh.)
What bandwidth and contention are the dedicated servers connected to?
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Contention is not an issue. We have lats of bandwidth. You will not run out. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->Hmm, thats not the question I asked but fair enough...
I expect the server will be using anything from 400-1000kb/s during the peak useage time depending on how busy it is and how many slots I open. Is this acceptable?
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->How does that translate to a data transfer amount?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I was estimating 400 for 16 player server (no always full) and 1000 for a busy 32 player server... but it's mainly guess work and the return question doesn't help me. I have tried the maths but my estimates place datatransfer to be 100-200gb/month. Have I gone mad? btw they charge 99p per gigabyte over 1000/year.
In the terms and conditions you say that I would have root access, I am an experienced linux admin but are there any security precutions you take with your dedicated servers (firewalling for example) or is securing the server solely my responsibility (that would be my preference).
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Your responsibility<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Excellent. I hate it when an ISP put a firewall or proxy in 'for your protection' <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
When you install Rh8 to your servers what options are added? Just so I know how much work I'll have to do ;o) as default can I run a website that relies on perl, mysql, php, sendmail and apache, will I have to configure these services, install them or what?
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->You may need to install PERL. The rest are part of the standard install<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->Peice of cake then <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
So how many players can I fit into 80Gb/month ?? any one got log files?

I have our server running on the exact same server spec and have 18 player, 2 reserve. It gets laggy when there is a long game. It was slightly better before we switched from red hat to debian. :o
I suggest you read some of the support forums for uk2 at <a href='http://forums.uk2.net' target='_blank'>forums.uk2.net</a>, last I heard was they wouldn't let you run a game servers, but maybe they changed it, maybe that was a rumour...
UK2 only have CS servers because the Managing Director plays CS, I hope he doesn't start playing NS. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

hehe, It might be good thing to get him playing NS, think of all the extra servers and publicity <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
As you can see in my above post UK2 have said that it fine for me to run a gamserver but I need to know if I can fit it into 80Gb transfer a month....
// EDIT //
Thanks guys, but the search is working today (or I'm pressing the right keys ) and I found my answers.. for reference in case anyone else is looking
Voogru claim 6-16Gb/day on one server. (22+2r slots)
6*30 = 180Gb
16 * 30 = 480Gb
Brutas Claims 162Gb trnsfer in a month on his 16 player server
Ouch. So ?40 for the server, with 80Gb + an extra 100Gb at ?1 per Gb means the server will cost me ?140 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
It appears I am back to square one, although if the server is quiet it will cost me less.
So I guess I could limit the transfer ammounts using sv_maxrate ...
Not to say their dedicated machines won't be decent though, but running any server will cost you horribly.
I'm just hoping I can find a decent 1Mb upload xDSL. Shame we're so slack at getting these connections running in the UK <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
doesn't mean that their game servers are any good <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

My experience is exactly the same.
I would warn anyone against UK2 i have yet to have a decent (as in unlaggy game) yet on any of their servers
Would it be considered unfair to set the server to close (after the finish of the current game) at 0300 and re-open at say 1700 to best serve the UK peak times whilst not over running my bandwidth too much? Just an idea... Perhaps running longer at the weekend. I cant seem to find a dedicated server package with over 80Gb of transfer allowance. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

Having looked around the options suggested in here, plus a couple of options I have found elsewhere, I am still not exactly knocked over by the price/performance ratio of the systems on offer.
Since the last posting has anyone any good/bad experiences that would be helpful or can anyone reccomend a hosting company other than those already mentioned ?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
The specs I am after are:
Run a 22 player NS server i.e. AMD 2100+ or P4 1.4 (oops mean 2.4)
Has enough bandwidth to run full at least 18 hours a day i.e. >40 Gig a month.
Does not cost the earth - I can afford up to £100/month thanks to contributions from thehaven community.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards
Haven
They are good guys and if they don't have what you want they are open to suggestions. Most of their systems are P4 2.4Ghz.
