Yes, I am super-noob. Please help me.
I just bought a headphones and mic set. The mic works, I know because windows sound recorder picks me up just fine. I can hear everybody else crisply with the speakers. I have the "enable voice" and "use mic for voice" boxes checked. But people can not hear me. WTH not?
I just realized this belongs in tech support, and that I can't delet my own post. Sorry.

I had exactly the same idea. It just wasn't working. But then I realised that I didn't have the microphone recording enabled. If you double-click on the "Volume" tray icon, you'll get a window with all the slides. Go to options -> properties. Click recording and OK. Now here, you have to click on the "select" check box of the microphone balance. You should now hear yourself on the pseakers in real time.
I don't know, maybe you did that and maybe it isn't even neccessary. But give it a try..
In your windows volume control panel (yeah the thing with the slides) there should be a slide for the microphone, shove that way up high...
*note that, if you cant find it, check the options/properties menu in volume control, and "check"the mic box in the list you will see => it enables your mic control in the volume control panel
In your sierra dir there is a program called voicetweak => it sets your transmit volume, play around with it, depending on the quality mic you use put it around 75% of the sliding bar.
Furthermore you can set your transmit volume in that sliding bar in the options menu in NS where you checked the boxes, but I assume you set that one already
Next to all of this, check the microphone is actually in the microphone holeplugthingy, it's always easy to make a mistake while plugging it in and it can happen to anyone, so just check it!
That's bout all that comes to my puny little mind, so I hope there is something that leads to a solution of your problem,
good luck, c u in-game
and

*move this to Tech plz
Have you bound a button in NS for your mic? If not bind "button" "+voicerecord" in console or your config.cfg (obviously replacing "button" with a button of your choice)

What do you mean by binding keys and typing in the consol? Is consol the message thing I use to chat during the game?
typing in console is not the say thing.
To get into console, you need it enabled. To do this, you have to start HL with -console i believe. possibly another parameter, not sure.
Then, you can pull it down in game with ~ (on qwerty; for my azerty its ²/³)
there you type commands.. and such.
Update: I have voice bound to mouse button four (my mouse has little thumb buttons on the side). When I press and hold the button down, the voice box blinks on and off instead of staying solid. Only bits and pieces are registered. That's why evertyhing I saw is garbled. Now, how do I fix this?
ive had trouble suing voicecomm when commandering and looking over a crowded base, so i thought id point this out.
good luck
to see your fps and network information put net_graph 3 into the console, and then in the lower left a buncha numbers appear, the top leftmost one is your frames per second.
displaying all those numbers take more processor power so it may be best to turn it back off with net_graph 0 . but not immediately, because youll want to see how the fps fares in different situations,
itll be high in the readyroom and low in a firefight.
to turn it of "cl_showfps 0".
Netgraph is just fine though, if you have a recent PC.. HL can't do more than 99fps anyways, and 40-50 should be playable, even with occasional drops. Heck i played that 20... now im doin solid 99
Help?
<edit>
I searched the forum and found two relevant threads. Read them and see if they help.

When I speak into my mic during Gampelay, isn't it suppose to show a sort of sign that I'm talking to the players on-line? (As in pressing the tab key for statistics and the speaker icon should have movement) but in my case, that didn't happen. WHY?!?
And they're still running...
