I was just wondering if anyone had a broadband ISP that caps downloads at about 2.5 mbps but LIMITS UPLOADS TO 64kbps? To me, this is a deceptive and unfair business practice as these numbers aren't even published. I had to look at my DHCP config info after i realized I couldn't run a half-life server and get more than 6 users with reasonable pings.

I mean, the only time I could possibly use the full 2.5mbps DOWNLOAD is if I downloaded copyrighted software and videos, which I don't but surely others do, hogging up hundreds of gigabytes per month. So now I have a fully modded kickass server on a kickass machine that I can't use unless I "illegally" flash my modem. Oh well, at least I'll get some decent upload speed when I go back to school this fall.

dude cable is not for uploading, because of the extreme costs of it. if you want to be able to upload, get a t1 or above.

sounds like you've got a "standard" home broadband connection. If I guess right, I'd say you have a cable connection. Download speed up the arse, but a trickle of upload. Usually the speeds that I've been seeing are 1.5+ meg down and 128 up. I've seen some cable connections go as high as 7+ meg down, but still only a trickle up.

You may want to call your ISP and ask them about it. HINT: Don't go whining about deceptive business practices, etc, as the tech support people don't care and whining only makes them less willing to go the extra mile for you. Talk to the techies, ask THEM how much upload you SHOULD be getting, and what rate do they consider to be too slow.

You may want to talk your parents into considering a Business-Class connection. I got a "Telecommuter" package from RoadRunner (2.5 down/.750up *guaranteed bandwidth*) for only $5 more/month than the standard home connection. I also have no "useage" cap, and am specifically ALLOWED to run a server on my cable connection. Most home cable connections FORBID running a server, as it tends to hog your neighbor's bandwidth. You can actually get your account revoked for that. Read your ISP's Terms of Service for specific information.

what does this have to do with "Servers and Server Operators"

It has everythign to do, considering about how fast the connection is.

Anyways, look into a T1, they are considerably less cheaper than they were several years ago, about the same as a cable in "certain" places. With T1 you can reach upload speeds of about 100-200kb/sec, thats more than enough to have a NS server, NS servers use about 60-80kb/sec upload speed, not considering everything else you might have on the server. If you can reach those speeds, then you can have a good server with about 18 people, but it gets overloaded and will crash or reach crazy pings like 400 once you have alot of entities/models/sprites. Also NS servers require good comp specs.

Well you guys are wasting your time. he just sounds like a 13yr kid that think his 50 bucks a month cable modem should be able to get 100Mbps in both ways.

Listen dude, you gotta learn how expensive it is for bandwidth, and your 50 bucks just won't cut it. at least not in these 5-10 years.

T1? for him? I don't think he can afford anything more than 10 bucks (his parents probably paying for his cable)]

You can have fun flashing your modem, lots of Cable ISP watching it's network more carefully now and if they see something funny with certain users, and they found that you changed your modem's settings, prepare for some dude to bust ur doors.

I see you're new to this forum.

Please be more considerate in how you talk to others. We're all trying to help each other here, not getting aggressive and belittling others.

    Thank you.

his idea is the best, if you can actually take the time to read thru the contracts and packages, and if you ask around and be a tad aggressive in finding packages and deals you can usually score a good one, and make sure you read and understand all the contracts, so you know if you can run a server etc etc etc

I was considering an "upgraded class" to boost my upload, but the price of such from my cable company makes an OC48 look reasonable. I'm already paying $50/month, and that IS a large chunk of money if you have a limited budget. The RoadRunner deal does sound good, but Comcast is nowhere near where I live.

I just made this thread because I know some lucky **** who have a basic cable internet package that has an upload cap of 200-300kbits/sec.

And just to be clear (I hope everyone got this), I am talking about bits per second. If I were getting 64kbytes/sec, I wouldn't be complaining.

Some ISPs do not allow game server hosting using the cable connection. It should be written in their policy agreement somewhere.
  • MasterShakeMasterShake Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15699Members
Yes, I read my acceptable use policy - "the use of your connection for a public server is strictly forbiddon" the key word being public here. If it weren't for the upload cap, I could run a password protected server. But I'm seriously giving up on this issue until its back to college with a nice fat pipe (take that any way you wish.) My college explicity states that you can run servers, even for personal gain in some situations. Its a kickass server, but it can wait until fall.

Hey, your lucky, im paying 50$ for 192/64 kbps connection! (well, sometimes the upload goes over 90kbps and the download is more like 170kbps)
