First Rt

where???
Firstly, this should be in the noob forum but i thought i could get better feedback by posting the topic here.

My question is: where should you place your first rt?

If you place it nearest to your starting hive, you are sure to get screwed by scouting marines. Your skulks may or may not protect you, and there is a chance that vanilla skulks will get owned by the marines at the start.

If you place it at a new hive location, pray hard that some rambo doesn't come and kill you. Even if you've got skulk escort, the skulks will probably go down in the face of a determined marine attempt to wipe your fat self from the face of NS forever.

Considering that lvl1 armour come pretty soon, and that cara comes later (esp if you want to get a 2nd hive up asap), where do you go during this interval of alien weakness?

Well you're safer at your own hive than you are at any other hive. I'd suggest finding a vent unaccessable by marines and waiting for 22 res there, then come down to build the res. That way you have limited your chance of being hunted down by marines to a short period. Then go back to some hiding spot in the hive and wait for another 22 before moving out with escort.

Also while your waiting for res you can order the aliens about. Just keep looking everywhere and see where all the yellow dots are and keep everyone informed with what's going on.

Another thing, don't move or spit, you make noise, commander hears you or sees the spit and tells the marines to get there and kill you.

(I was writing a very long and intelligent reply to this post, with all manner of methods and ways, exceptions, tactics, and so on, but my IE crashed, so I'm giving you my end-conclusion)

IMHO when you start the game, pick the hive that you want to take first, and cap all the nodes along the way and in the area.
There are of course many many exceptions, but I'm not writing them again

I'd say pick the closest to your starting hive. You can save under the hive and get health if marines come. You can also try to kill solo marines who attack with your healthspray or at least stall em so they can't spawncamp. Killing a marine as a gorge without carapace is pretty damn hard so I'd suggest you only distract him and let the skulks kill... After you get 19-21 RP, wait until a skulk spawns and ask him to come with you to the resource nozzle (you can go alone too if the nozzle is close enough). After you've built the RT, back to the hive and start building those DCs right away!

This is how I do it and I think it's a pretty safe way of getting that first crucial RT and start with the DCs...

in general, putting the first RT between your hive and therine spawn is a good idea (assume they are not rushing the hive), as you will have constant skulk traffic going by it to defend it and you.

you should always hide in the hive waiting for the first 22, it comes in exceedingly slow.

if they are rushing the hive, then try and get as far away out of marine traffic as possible and drop an RT there.

    Depends on the map.

Sometimes you should cap the one between your hive and their base (most often, in fact) because of precisely what Niteowl said. However, sometimes you may want to cap one leading away, or somewhat away, from their base, such as on Eclipse, where building in Triad often results in a dead gorge. There are also cases where you'll want to build in a hive, as long as you are fairly confident that they aren't relocating. For example, maint works well, since at the bottom, you're hidden from scans, and only need to ask for an escort when you're coming up to build.
