<div class="IPBDescription">How did they pick 'em?</div> I've been with NS since the day it was released, and the NS forums since four days after it was released... so i'm wondering why i wasn't considered a "veteran" and stuff.
To keep flamers off, this is not a post saying "OMFGZ, GIMME 1.1 I R VETERAN!!!!" i'm simply asking how veterans were chosen.

1) Communication skills
2) Understanding of game theory.
3) Gaming ability (you must be at least decent, shut it Erilane )
4) Stable internet connection.
5) Commitment to NS.
6) A reasonable understanding of the HL engine.
The above are weighted differently. Some people are PTs because of 2) primarily. Me for example. Others are PTs because of 3) or 5). All PTs have all bar one of the above to a reasonable degree and rate extremely highly in one of the other areas.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Nope.
Dread, IRC will help as far as getting yourself known, but it's your forum activity that is likely to count the most in terms of achieving a PT position, as it's generally easier to show your communication skills and other PT-worthy attributes in forums as opposed to a real-time chat environment.

Yep, no one knows me <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
I just thought that IRC would count pretty much because I've seen few PT's that are not so very active in forums. Guess I thought wrong <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Insane is correct here. I hadn't joined #naturalselection <i>once</i> until I was invited onto the playtesting team and realized I'd need to learn how to join the team's channels.
You need t3h marketing skillz to sell yourself <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
In fact, I would like to add a seventh <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
7) You must be liked by a few other playtesters.
I say this because I meet all the criteria 1 through 6, I am just not PT because they do not like me. So be loved, fellow NSers, and by the way, we can't have *too many* PTers. Probably another reason why I am not in.
P.S. Loved the (shut it erilane) thing <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
That is incorrect. It is not about like or dislike. Hell, I cannot stand Comprox, and he still gets to test. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Playtesters are chosen from <b>visible</b> forum and IRC members who meet the above conditions, normally (but not always) recommended by current playtesters. Do not forget also that the point is not to make everyone who has the skills to playtest a playtester, but to get enough people with those skills to enable NS to be properly tested.
(Edit: Typo <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> )
I didnt think i had much chance anyway, but what use would a laggy, unstable Playtester with 10fps be apart from testing latency? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

That's an important part! They need to know how playable the game is, if you are playing in Euro-server from Asia or so <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Edit: Actually I have 4(good stable connection) but my computer or pretty low-end. Though I'd probably buy a new one immediately if I'd get to PT <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Unfortuneatly, I'm usually hard on myself so selling myself seems quite awkward and hypocritical. I can get by, though. For instance, I've been making games my whole life. It's a hobby of mine. I understand the dynamics of gameplay better than anyone I know. I made a simple stab at selling myself by posting that. I'm just not willing to waste my time by sitting in an IRC channel all day.
Here's my old CS one.
K E m 1 K a and L!
That's how you SPELL the guy who plays WELL!!!
eh? pretty sweet. And it only took me five minutes to make, doesn't even show <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Cool post huh? This is what happens when I'm at work. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
--My bad, urination is in the filter--
Me neither. The whole IRC thingy just sounds so boring <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
I rather just mess around here and make all the mods angry <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
No joke, that's why I pwn on a majority of pubs. I've played against some excellent clans and some devs/PTs here and there. Don't worry, I'm far from a kill hog, I'll throw my body on a TF over and over and over again if our team needs it. I know what it takes to make a team work. (no pun intended) <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
This is a pretty big community, and most servers have a maximum of 16 players, meaning you'll only encounter 16 people at once. Add to that the chance of encountering someone such as a PT or Dev, and it's not very surprising.
Haha, sorry. Text is horrible at expression, I'll need to start using the [sarcasm] tags and such. I understand that quite well, Insane.
I'd even take on Flayra anytime anywhere <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Yeah, it's just a problem when I don't like leagues. And on top of that, I don't want to dedicate my life to playing a game, I don't have the time. You can't put "I won the NS CAL championship" on a job resume. You can put, "I helped play test a large-scale modification for the game Half-Life." I've done it, and it makes sense to them. Especially when I'm applying for a web development job at a multi-national corporation. They saw it as testing and communication experience. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Good for you. It's actually good that Flay uses more time making the game instead of playing it.
I'm not a particularly good NS Player. I just know about NS more than average ns player <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Hehe. I suppose a rolling eyes smilie would come in use <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
