Very well said Insane... that's such a huge part of the NS world. If you're playing with imagination you really feel totally immersed on the actual precedent of the game... you feel part of the TSA, combating an infestation... or you feel like a little sneaky skulk trying to get rid of the invaders.
By feel, I mean your heart rate goes up and you become passionate about what's going on.... you respond to your enviroment to such an intense degree... and when all is said and done, you feel bloody **** scared when you're the last marine or alien hiding cowardly somewhere in a vent.
It's the feeling of NS that makes it what it is... atmopshere is such a difficult thing to achieve, because it requires so much subtle attention to detail in lots of different areas... but by jove, if atmosphere's what you want, NS has bucketloads of it

I'll never forget the first time I walked down a dark corridor, smoke pouring out of a broken pipe, the sound of dripping far off and the hum of machinery, not knowing what was going to come at me. I'll never forget the moment just after that when a skulk leapt from the rafters right on to my face and bit into me, instantly killing me. That was one of the scariest moments a game has ever thrown at me, and it wasn't scripted. It was a totally random event based on the atmosphere NS creates, and the actions of the players themselves.
NS is the only game I've encountered that can make dying a really fun experience... how many times have you said "Woah... that was cool!" as a skulk leaped over the top of you and landed smack bang on top of you....
Yay, this thread lives!
I was reading the last couple posts, and it made me think of last night's 1.1 playtesting. I was running around as the 'reinforcement' Marine, going solo where the commander ordered me (welding, building, backing up troops). It was great fun, and I found myself getting into the see-sawing battle more and more. I was moving through the spooky west corridors of Tanith when I heard the sound of a bass grunt and clicking claws from a falling skulk. I whipped around to have a face full of teeth and I literally jumped out of my chair here in my office from being so startled.
I've been playing NS since December 2001, and it still draws me in like nothing else. The makers of NS really did a number on this game!
I remember the first time I ever walked into Atmospheric Processing on Caged (i think it is, or nancy?) and i was struck in awe of the immense amount of scale this game is in - it was massive - i felt like i was really in that level - at one stage i was afraid we would run out of oxygen if AP went down.
It was at that moment i realised this game was going to be huge, and i was going to be apart of it every step of the way.
Speaking of memorable, back in 1.0 (when no one could decide what chamber to put up first) we had 3 Senses up and Cloak, on hera entrance and reception elevator, i sat on top of the button on the ground floor while another buddy skulk was on the pipes in the corridor directly infront of me.
I heard footsteps. I chuckled. He Chuckled. Chaos ensued. I came away with one of the most stylish kills. Best. Match. Ever.
I don't have anything additional to say here. This game is a gem, and always will be. I'm sure the devs will put all of those complaint threads to rest once it gets released to the public. Don't let them discourage you, guys, you're doing a great job.

Having experienced how human nature exebites itself on the internet, I've no doubt that the critisciscms and complaints will continue indefinately... all the more reason why a thread like this is so damn important!
SLX, the map you refer to is bast, one of the most visually appealing out there in my opinion... tram tunnel, atmos, feedwater, refinery, cockpit... all absoloute gems!
Topic Starter killed Whining n00b with Voice of authority.
WELL SAID!!! I think it gets out the message weve all wanted to or have been saying the whole time. Patience. In the mean time deal with the beautiful game that has been etched in fps history indefinately. um... not sure if its coming out all right but i hope i got my message out... hum... heh, i look at the title again, "Replying to -huge- Thankyou To Flayra & Co." and it makes me feel like im signing a petition or something to shut people up and to congratulate flayra (and co.) on this monumental acheivement, as so many have called it... it has generated so many classic moments, and its depressing to see those all go out the window when people find one flaw in it... oh well... i feel ive said my piece now... so lets get started on that **** hmg jp rush... heh jk
this thread is long, but i understand the main point of it
[sub] raises many good points as usual this game is the most interactive/social game i've come across, and makes other games seem very boring, losing is just as much of an enjoyable experience as winning...excpet for a few situations *cough* jphmgrush *cough*, and it's good to be a part of the growing and evolving community...it does indeed create many memorable experiences, and gives you a good chance to create a screenshot or two of them
that's all i have to add about that really.....and just that NS kicks **** over any other multiplayer game
and i wish people would stop bitching about 1.1 and how it's gonna suck and how it is so unbalanced etc...and to hurry up with playtesting..
just shut up and wait i say, most of us haven't even played it, yet sit here and **** about it, i'm willing to wait, and of course it'll be different, but i remember when the changeover from 1.03 to 1.04 occured, i was so **** off that fades cost 54 and you had to 'use' a phase....but now i couldn't imagine any different....what i'm saying here is that things can only change for the better, and in time we will all adust and come to love it more

Heh... know what you mean about signing a petition of sorts
My only wish is that the topic title hadn't been butchered from -HUGE- to -huge-... perhaps one of the friendly admins could go into the database and change it to more accurately reflect our sentiments?

Been playing since 1.0 and I've loved every second of it. It was what I had been looking for in a game for a long time.
