My first game was as marines (of course), I had read the manual, and the entire Tales From The Frontlines thread (as it was written), and the two faqs... And the RC changelogs, so you could say I knew a thing or two I spawned in Bast (the best map, but you already knew that ), my commander gave me a waypoint to feedwater control and after filling myself up with ammo at the armoury I did my best to follow the waypoint, after about 2 minutes I was in the tram tunnel, when all of a sudden... OH NOS! Naturally, I died, 5 seconds later somebody at my ISP pressed that "Disconnect SiLeNcEr-7 for no apparent reason" button and I had to reconnect, next game I joined aliens on eclipse and had a nice time snacking on clueless space marines for the next hour or so, then we lost due to the res bug that caused the marines to get way more than they should, hence the insane turret farms (yes, it was a bug, read the changelogs if you don't believe me). Then I found my favourite alien class, on bast, as a lerk I totally pwnzored about 6 marines, a few of whom were HA and some of which had HMGs who were trying to build a base in... Generator hive (for some reason I can't remember if that was the right name for the life of me, so correct me if I'm wrong), which was a huge open space with a few ledges near the ceiling, I found two on opposite sides of the room and began spiking the marines, then I flew at approximatly 99999999999999999999999999mph to the other ledge and started spiking them from there as they frantically looked around for me, I flew to the other side and repeated the process as they frantically fired up, not sure of where I was, probably thinking that there were two of me, pwned, tons of res worth of hmg's HA's and a TF down the drain. I got disconnected again soon after that, next day I had my first taste of victory in game I joined at the beginning, as an alien (for obvious reasons, if you still don't get it you've never played 1.0 and typed "TEAMS!"), damn that was fun.
my first game was a 1v1 on a network with my friend on eclipse. I got aliens and he got marines. I eventually figured out that I had to gorge to build stuff. I eventually got a another res tower some d's and then found his base. of course he regularly gunned me down and by the next time I got there he had turrets. I then figured out how to build o towers. They were pretty damn awesome. Unfortunately he had figured out how to get heavy armor by then and I was hurting pretty bad so he came and stomped me.
My first game on a server was a custom map (I forget the names). One where the aliens are above the marines and they drop down on them (freefall?) the version where the res is in a small separate room. I started my first marine game. I just ran around and built things, though I couldnt figure out how to get ammo. Then I noticed the skulks were raining on us, and some very clever ones snuck into our res room an was taking them down. After killing a few we finally had jetpacks. So I strapped one on and went flying into the sky, then ran out of energy and plummetted to the ground. Next jp I get past the inbetween platform but cant reach the top to I plummet to that middle ground and die again. I finally figure out how to get onto that platform and then how to get from there up to the top. but by then we had won the game. Then I jumped on aliens and noticed noone was gorging so I thought hey I can do this. First thing I did was plop down an O tower to protect us from those pesky jp'ers. And I get the screams of "Noob!!!!" So I of course ungorge and commence my skulk bombing. I remember the sneaky guy and go for the res, I quickly take down a couple, but then we are dealing with jp's again. As I scramble around I note to myself this is much more fun than CS.
My first day of NS was close to when it was first released. i went marine and had no clue of what was going on and after a few random corridors i appeared to be in a room with a giant sack (hive) after this, the game crashed and i didnt play the game for about 6 months.

I played v1.03 first, and I had no idea what was going.
For the first week as an alien I would gorge everytime and I only knew how to build RT's and OC's, I never looked at chat, I must have really **** my team off. Oh and when I realised I wasn't helping my team by going gorge, I would evolve to fade the second we got 2 hives, but I didnt know it had more than 1 weapon, and asked my team how i get those "cool green thingies".
On the marine side I was a rambo for months without realising how much teamwork really is needed for ns.
meh first game? I was stuck in CS Mode, so was using the radio commands a lot and not requesting medpaks, challeging skulks to knifefights...and crouching to get better accuracy. ... i have learned now...really? ... can i plant the bomb now?
I followed the mod already several months and i had read the manual like 200 times ,seen all screenshots and read through the "Tales from the Fronline thread" more than just one time, so i thought i exactly knew how everything was.
At this time i had only ISDN so it took me about 4 hours to download the installer . Starting at 5 pm i finally finished the download at 9. Like every new mod i download , i started a lan game. Of course hera cause i had heard and seen that it was the most beautiful map. I joined marines and : W00T. I couldnt trust my eyes. Not just the marine spawn with the hallway of glass leading to reception was awesome , but as i first shot the lmg i was also cought by the impressive sound (I had just seen screens and all the movies were without sound). After some wandering around , trying the comm chair , building some stuff and joining aliens to try all lifeforms i finally joined an online game.
It was caged , from which i had just seen few screens but the ambience that map created on my first day was impressive. I joined marines and checked out the whole base. I grabed a little ammo (ok , to be honest, it was 50/250 for the lmg and 10/30 for the pistol) and jumped through the phase gate. We had a little forward base with a tf and some turrets near generator. Some skulks were attacking the tf and i turned around and : YEEEEHAAW , i got one. Then i pressed tab and had a look at the scoreboard. It was 8 marines vs. 3 aliens and after getting killed for several times i thought i had played the "rhines" (i also dislike this word) long enough and joined the aliens. Generator was our only hive , and now it was 7 vs. 4 with 2 gorges and 2 skulks. Of course the marine team grouped up and rushed the hive , but it was still an amazing scene. I'll never forget that.

Lukcily by the time I started about 6 months ago auto-balance was implemented. It was the good ol' days of 1.03, the days of 1.03 BEFORE two-hive lockdowns were popular too! My first game was in Eclipse, and I had read the mnaual once or twice, and got the basics. I think I got eaten quite a few times but I also managed to kill some. I was happy about the lack of recoil. I asked lots of questions and most everybody was helpful and answered them so the basics were learned quickly. A bit later I joined aliens on ns_nancy, went gorge, and started asking people how much a hive cost hehe. People didn't like that too much.
here is an example of how much i have change since i first saw ns...
I was over my friends house when i first saw it and I thought that the skulk teeth was the coolest thing I have ever seen. I was like "WOW! Good idea for a model!"

It was Epic, with a capital E. And it forever embedded Bast in my mind as a FUN map.
And I'm sure some of you who played 1.0 remember some game that lasted over two hours, with a constant give and take.
And to those wondering, I believe the Kharaa managed to take the game, thanks mainly to QuietMischief's organizational skills.
Mmmm......my first game wasent really THAT long ago.....i havent been playing as long as many of you guys, just since 1.03 i think......anyway, i dont remember the name of the map, it's that one with that big door you can shut on the marine spawn, but it can be broken down Anyway, it was that map...it was near the end of the game, i was Marines...i spawned, and although i had read the entire manual, i really was just learning, so i roamed around a little bit, built a building, and the commander actually dropped a welder on me, and wanted me to weld something, but i didnt know how... anyway, in my wandering and exploring, i went down the hallway that shoots off of the marine spawn, and managed to get in a firefight with a Fade...to this day i still have NO CLUE why he didnt come at me and claw me to death, but it was a good fight....i would strafe around, unload my LMG clip in his general direction(Usually not hitting, because he was strafing behind a corner too) then i would strafe back and reload, and that kept going...every once in a while, instead of the usual blob of goo, he would shoot some sort of blob that caused splash damage, hurting my and the turrets...of course, now i know it was Bile Bomb, but at the time i didnt know the significance of BB....anyway, still NEITHER of us had won this Fade vs LMG/LA fight, and i was about out of Ammo, so i fell back to the armory to get some Ammo, and my back was to that door(It was shut at the time, so i assumed it was safe) when all of a sudden i hear this horrible scream/roar sound... again, i really didnt know what it was, but as i turn i hear this crashing sound, and i see the door cave in, and in charges an Onos...i fired two or three pistol shots into it, but it promptly proveded to kill me, and the Marines promptly proceeded to lose...but nevertheless, it was an incredibly awsome moment....

I let a friend of mine borrow my computer and test the game. Think he came in around the end game at bast as a marine. Skulks and fades was bombarding the spawn and thanks to the insane turretfarming of those times (some time in november) they probably held out for an hour or something before going down. There was a gorge in the vent who kept on spamming babblers, there where aliens everywhere and gunfire could be heard near constantly. It felt like we were part of the Alien 2 movie

It was last year someday, a buddy and me played DoD a lot til we got bored and looked for other HL mods. We accidentelly stumbled across NS, looked at the screenies... well 20 minutes later we were joining the first i-net game. We were amazed on the graphics, and the fact another guy, the COMM, spoke to the Marines giving them orders and stuff.
We joined in the very moment (Eclipse) as the COMM issued HA and HMG to the squad at Marine start. Well, all except us We had no clue what all the buildings were, nor how the different weapons looked like. The second experience... well the second and the next 10 experiences was when we joined other servers while Kharaa already flattened the base with 3 Hives up... so basically we jumped into the onslaught and got killed every 3 or 5 seconds

My first game of ns was pretty horrible ... I know it was bast, and as I connected to the server not only did I have about 5 million regular lag, I had pclags as well .. the alien (I didnt go marine in fact till 1.03 or so) popupmenu wouldnt close when I wanted it closed, I was confused, everyone called me a noob even though they were as or usually even more clueless then me ...
Anyway, that's not what I really like to remember, what is more fun to think about is how strategies changed in say half a month ... I remember connecting to a server on whatever map and we're all like "let's FIND the second hive" cause nobody really knew the maps that good yet ... good times, was fun ... I also remember it took me looooong to figure out where all vents were.
I also remember the marines being pretty much undefeatable, ... since most peeps were pretty much oblivious to the importance of "more then 1 hive" and since turrets were the marines speciality (lets not forget how the turrets kept firing even after the tf died, you had to go for the individual turrets back then) the games lasted loooong and usually ended up in a hive lockdown and a sieging.
