My very first game was 1.03. The first thing i did when I joined was go gorge (naturally ) and proceeded to build a Offence chamber. The marines had a siege though, so it blew up in my face and killed me. I must have repeated this about 10 times before i screamed in frustrations ARGH HOW DO I BUILD? THEY KEEP BLOWING UP IN MY FACE!!! ARAORUAURAUR!!!! I then proceeded to go back to skulk. ~1.03 Autotrack siege - the n00b eliminator.
I started with 1.00 and it was a pretty "weird" version alright! Sentry farms EVERYWHERE, marine team always had like 12 players versus 4 aliens. It was a total marine ownage game. Was fun though, because just about everyone was a newbie and didn't know the map nor anything else so all strategies were used. Natural Selection has truly amazing graphics too! I'm all used to it now, but then it was amazing.
Last addition: I don't remember alien resource bug. Maybe I was too stupid to notice it, but I only heard people whining about it on servers once or twice...
I started playing TWICE. Ya.. I left for a while. First time was either 1.0 or 1.01, Not quite sure, It was about 4 days to a week after the release.. I think 1.01 came out pretty quickly after 1.0.. I can't remember. Anyways, I played, alot. For weeks on end. Then I stopped. Just ended.
Played Science and Industy and some other lesser known mods here and there inbetween.. Then I returned for 1.04; I had to rebuild. Skills had gone to 0. It was fun, I was like a n00b who knew all the levels. Except Hera... Never played that untill 1.04, since most servers didn't have the giant level on their regular rotation back then.. I think
Halloween first day, on a crappy computer that ran it at 5 fps But i perservered and eventually got a comp that rocked so all was well.
About two weeks before 1.01 was released. The only thing that I miss from the way early versions is the optional damage indicator that floats up when you hit something... but that's back in 1.1! Yay!
I think this would be better as a poll then anything else. Good luck getting someone to make it for you tho.
The day it came out on public release v1.0 wooty then 5 minutes after being smushed to bits as a skulk by turrets and marines in heavy armour that out numbered the aliens 1000000000 to 1 i got a little bored.
Then I found out that the aliens could fight back by 2 of them switching to the marines team voting the comm out jumping in the CC and recycling their turret farms and their base then building loads of CCs theh switch back to aliens whack 2 hives up and pwn
Hello you all!! I'm new around here and this is my first post.. I started to play in december (i think it was 1.03) and have played since then almost every day
I had the NSTR2, just to look at the cool things ( I do a bit of mapping though, and I was curious..)
Started downloading on Halloween, 9 hours later ( yes, 9 hours, 56k you see..) had my first game. 1.0 was great, but damn did it need the "balance teams" patch..Like Maus, I was playing almost exclusively with old DoD/CS players I knew, and it was really good fun working through a very weird new game..
"WTH! I have a wallhack?" "yeah, it's ok, we're allowed one.."
"hax! he just turned invisible!"
"er....they have a gun that shoots through walls?"
"what do I do?" "run towards the yellow blobs and bite them!!"
"wheeee I can fly!"
"/insert random "Aliens" quote"
And I don't think I'll forget my first encounter with a cloaked onos...
So there we were. Bored. I was searching for a CS server. One close to where i live (Adelaide, South Australia). So anyways I look, and I know that most of our ISP's have a list of servers. I went to a particular one which had a "HL" section. Im like ok, so lets see what Mods they have up? Oh DoD CS TFC the usual. WTHH???!??!!?? NS??? is that like a modded version of CS like Nuke Strike or something?? Well I had to go check it out. I did just that. So they had a link to the main website.
My jaw dropped.
I realised that it was a big download, i fainted. Not really but you know.
So I go over my friend's house with cable, im a 56ker, and he's like this big Alien's fan, he goes "i just bought the whole box sset on DVD" So i'm like "well, HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU!!!"
At that moment in time i snatched the keyboard from his hands and opened it up to the natural-selection home page, i think it had an intro once, or something i can't remember but his jaw dropped too and for the next 5 minutes or so we both sat there in silence waiting for it to download. I had my machine over too so i was ready to install it on my machine. As soon as it was done we decided it was a good idea to play on LAN for a little bit to get the hang of it. That didnt work out so I joined old school Optus-Net. I think i've been playing ever since last christmas, or even more
1.00...I think 7 minutes after it was released
How did I manage to get past the crashing servers and such? I have a subscription to fileplanet personal servers While you were all donwloading at 1.1K a second or crashing I was already playing because I downloaded at about 300kbps
I remember all the exploits of each version very well, here they are(but not limited too):
1.00 - Marines have exponetial res! Ouch! First game I played the marine base was EVERYWHERE, down the hallways, around every node, and then all of the sudden we won... I was very confused, but amazed also. Also lag!
1.01 - Was really unbalenced in favor for the marines.
1.02 - Severe spectator issues... People who spectated would seriously llamize over the game. Also, the aliens were super tough; a carapace that never died...
1.03 - The seige cannon of death! Yipes!
1.04 - Marine ownage just like every other version, but my favorite overall.
Ahh, the good ole days...
I am amazed at how far NS has gone since v1.0, and I can't wait for more!
November... I think... 1.03 I believe because I remember quiting for a while, 1-2 months and then haveing to download a patch for 1.04. My first game was as marine, as it suggests to do in the manual, on ns_nothing I had no clue WTH was going on. I think we won though. I loved it from the start.
About 5 hours after the release of NS was when I first played. I spent over 4 hours trying EVERY SINGLE mirror on n-s.org. Finally, I just gave up and went to FilePlanet. The traffic was so high, FP crashed! Luckly, I noticed it crashed and pressed F5 (refresh) and got a 5 min wait in line compared to my previous 100+min.
a few days after halloween. since halloween was a schoolday, I couldn't play for a few days, although I had it installed and ready to go. man was I giddy
played a bit before new years....started playing heavily just a bit before 1.04 came out

Got it from a LAN party about a month ago. First game was 2 v 2. Me and a buddy were aliens against two rines. We were all newbs, but the rine comm had at least read The Manual before the LAN started, so he knew enough to get HA on the one active rine. Me and my friend had no clue what we were doing, so of course we were owned. It was still fun wall crawling and biting, so I started playing online, and the rest is history. So my fav version is 1.04.

Yes I downloaded it to look at all the pretty stuff
No I don't map
Last addition: I don't remember alien resource bug. Maybe I was too stupid to notice it, but I only heard people whining about it on servers once or twice...
phase gates were uber and everyone said aliens were too powerful
I thought gorges were like engineers in tfc, and the alien upgrade system made no sense to me whatsoever.
Played Science and Industy and some other lesser known mods here and there inbetween..

Ah, nostalgia..
Spent hours downloading 1.02 (56Ker and proud of it), then 1.03 came out and I spent ages downloading that.
It was about 2/3 done when I realised it was a server side patch and I didn't need it... D'oh!
My jaw dropped.
I realised that it was a big download, i fainted. Not really but you know.
