Hey all, NS n00b here <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Been playing ALOT of Marines <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo--> , helping out groups, etc. Going to waypoints set by comm, etc. But I seem to constantly get lost on the maps. People are shouting out get to some place like the engine room, but without a waypoint and not being with someone else that knows how to get there. Im totally lost, usually hang back and defend a base then <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

Is there some way to turn on room names on the mini map? Hell, ANYTHING to help me navigate when people yell out go to "such and such" without a WP?

Thanks in advance <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    just learn the maps. The name of the room is in the bottom left (or right, can't remember) of your screen when you're in it, so run around the maps untill you know where everywhere is. I know most places on most of the maps, but i sure as hell can't remember the maps by name. Cept siege <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Or you could just print the maps out. Look for maps on google. I can't remember any links though. It's best to just learn the maps though. After a while you will know where all the important places are and what they are called, trust me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    Yeah, running around is the best way to learn the names. Staying in base and defending won't help much. You WILL get killed by passing aliens running around there, but you will also learn the names.

    These websites have NS map overviews, if you're interested.

    Another trick is to play as a commander against bots by yourself. Getting the big-picture view, then going out into the map and building RTs where you placed it can help get a rough idea of where everything is in relation to each other, and it's a little more fun than just running around.

    I agree that overhead maps help a lot too.

    You should also play the alien side some, since otherwise you'll have trouble knowing where all the vents are. Having skulks leap out onto your head is amusing the first couple of times, but...

    Use notes or printouts of some type to speed up the learning process. You can start a LAN game and type sv_cheats 1 in the console to start the game and build alone (you will be able to build faster as well). From there, you should be able to get an idea of the map and practice moving around in it and even check it out from the comm chair. You just have to learn each map before you can really start to learn the finer points of NS.

    Back when planetns.com had the overhead maps, I looked at all of those while I was downloading ns <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    That helped a lot.

    Well, you could try to comm with bots or start a server with nobody in it and learn the maps (that's what I did). Or else, go look for maps available on the internet.

    P.S Alien hivesight is pretty useful for newbies, makes it easier to respond to attacks and see the location of hives and friends (and thus find your way round the maps). Just look out for the yellow and red circles if you want to know where the enemy is.
