Ok, so I have a big question for all of you "music conossuiers (sp?)" or just you people.

What kind of music do you like? Do your favorite bands tend to be indie or industrialized? and why do so many of you tend to *hate* mainstream bands? or are you just a bunch of hypocrites who say you hate mainstream but in truth listen to MStream bands?

Well I, for one, do not like MS bands because there are VERY few good punk bands signed to major labels. Besides, if one really wants to listen to punk (especially in the northeast where I am) you have to listen to really local bands that no one outside of your state has ever heard of. But that's just for one particular kind of music.

AllUrHiveRBelong2Us ( i hope I got it right THAT time), your avatar gives me a headache, I can't take that many ladies at once!!

Im industrialized, and I don't care who knows it. The only way I hear of new people is from the radio, but at least I don't listen to pop (Metal all the way!!)

I, myself, listen to mainstream mostly. Well, they get known as mainstream for a reason.

Currently I have/Listen to:

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Linkin Park - Meteora
Linkin Park - Reanimation
Evanescence - Fallen (gonna buy it graduation day, 1 week)
Taproot - Welcome
KoRn - Every single album released
System of a Down - Arial & Chop Suey

Mozart - Greensleeves (piano & lute)
Believer - Dies Irae

and a few others.

Since I listen to Pure Electronica, there's not Electronica Bands... only DJ's and Groups. I have all my song's on a .txt file, but it's lenghly and will take up lots of space.

I could list everything, but that would be tedious as all hell. However, I do listen to an awful lot more pretentious avant rock (GYBE!, Do Make Say Think, Mono, Set Fire To Flames, Silver Mt. Zion, etc) than I should, and have an incredible fondness for sad music (especially the beautiful Dirty Three).

Even in my more unenlightened (that's as in unenlightened to the joys of obscure music you'd never hear on the radio) days I'd not listen to mainstream pop, but was guilty of listening to the mainstream metal of the time, though even then I had quite a love of goth and new wave (which is how I know The Feelies' Crazy Rhythms is easily one of the greatest records of all time, even if I'm one of only about three Brits who've heard of it).

It was the tedium of hearing the same songs at rock clubs (and in shops, and at parties, and every fluffing place I went) that pushed me towards trying to find new things I'd never heard before, which is how I got sucked into having obscure tastes. The only mainstream bands I really like are Japanese rock bands, so they're hardly mainstream in the UK.

As for genres - I like pretty much all of them, so long as people are doing things I've not heard before (or at least not heard to death) in them. In fact, as I've been typing this my winamp playlist has taken me from Opeth (wonderful growly prog metal) to Mike Ireland (a country singer with a beautifully sad voice), and now on to some Count Basie.

well, I don't go anywhere really, so I don't hear mainstream pop except when I drive and when i am at my house.

The problem i have with the mainstream bands is that sadly there's barely any quality there. If there was quality songwriting or lyrics then i'd probably have a different opinion, but i believe that everything mainstream is a bit half-baked. Take nu-metal etc, if they could write proper music (rather than the same 3 drop D chords) i'd probably have respect for them as musicians. But sadly, about 99% of it is usually of such dire quality i find it hard to like it. The mainstream is a great place to get "ideas" about musical genres, think of them as the cover of the book, you've just got to open that book upand discover all the wonderful "unknown" bands are hidden inside.

As an example, i'll bring up Evanesceihuasegeee (yeah, yeah) I figure this post is because i sounded rather elitist when you brought them up. The fact is, in the world of female / dual vocal metal bands go, they are weak, exceptionally weak, and i mean that from a musicians point of view. But take a band like Lacuna Coil. Not known in the mainstream at all but well known otherwise, they've spent years perfecting the very music that Evaohgeuheoin wishes they could do, and every person who's listened to them, think they do best. Which they don't.

For years i've been listening to +VERY+ underground death and black metal, and this really does nothing but encourage scene elitism and music fascism. And it's quite a hard thing to shake if you're quite heavily into the "scene". I have shaken it pretty much, and virtually moved on to pastures new.

I don't find the fact that if a band is mainstream, if the money doesn't get to their heads, is that much of a problem. Except when it comes to Metallica. I used to love and respect Metallica so much, but, well, listen to them now. I've lost all respect in their musical integrity that i once had. Sorry, but they Sold Out™.

Anyway, as to what i listen to. Here's the brief list:
Black metal, Death metal, Doom metal, Punk, Ska, Dub, Reggae, Hip Hop, Trance, Dance, House, Industrial, Techno, Electronica, JPop, JRock, Para Para, Classical, Avant Garde, Ambient, Ethereal, Darkwave, Psychobilly, EBM, Futurepop, Drum N Bass, Noise, Powernoise, Power Ambient Drone (for you SUNN 0))) ). The list goes on and on. Really. And that's without really getting into subgenres. I listen to and love most music.

But the bottom line is, each to their own. I don't care what you listen to, if only in return you don't persecute me for my interests.

If you don't like my opinions, don't take them to heart, they are but my own opinions and hopefully you're all mature enough to respect that.

Aha! I've been interested in Sunn 0))) since that first record of theirs, but never had the courage to buy it when there are other records I *know* I'll like I could get instead. And it's not as if they're a band you can find on Kazaa to try out first.

Any idea if they have samples (or full tracks) available online anywhere?

Not a clue whatsoever mate. I saw 00void for sale in HMV, and after reading the Terrorizer review of it i just bought it as a spare of the moment thing.

It's very chilled music, not quite as good as the likes of Brighter Death Now, but still very cool. I'd recommend getting it for the hell of it anyway, heh.

Just if you do, turn the volume up loud and turn all the lights off. It's a fantastic thing.

Btw: whoever mentioned them, glad to see Godspeed You Black Emperor! get a mention. They kick so much @ss

I no longer buy music (read: they sued College students, granted, they were pirating, but that's no excuse to sue the LCD), but I can recommend bands:
Dynamite Hack
Fury in the Slaughterhouse (german band, sings in english)
Guano Apes (German band, sings in english)
Cowboy Mouth (listen to Jenny Says, it's funny)
