Big Boss almost certainly confirmed
There are some new tidbits about Metal Gear Solid 3 on Gamespot taken from an interview with Hideo Kojima.
Here's a snip, just in case any of you aren't convinced yet that you're playing MGS3 as Big Boss:

QUOTE

Showing the back of the E3 pamphlet, Kojima pointed out that using the lowercase letters on the design, you can spell "Big Boss." When asked if the main character is Solid Snake, Kojima did not give a direct answer. Instead, he said that the E3 trailer shows that the main character is missing an eye, and that he deliberately included a close-up scene to show it.

Can't wait till 2004...

He died! How is this possible?
Shouldn't it be like MGS -1?
Ok that was a bad argument but neways...
What'll be interesting is if you get to play AS Big Boss this time.
THINK!
Perhaps a in a prequel to the actual main game, something like the tanker episode, he loses an eye? Or maybe it IS Big Boss (then it would HAVE to be a prequel, Big Boss would be something like close to ninety years old now - you know: "Big Boss was in his late fifties when they created his copies." Also, I think he REALLY died after Metal Gear 2).
Also, there's only 3 MGS's Talesin.
Big Boss was the boss of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (never released in the US!). After that though, he died. dead. they have his body. he's no zombie, so he's dead.
Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (gameboy color, and EXTREMELY good, one of the best of the series) dealt with events after Metal Gear 2 but prior to Metal Gear Solid (Shadow Moses). The story is pretty isolated and other than falling back on some information that happened in Metal Gear 1 and 2, it has nothing to do with the rest of the series, and the story isn't brought up in other metal gears.
i'll make a timeline later.

Ummm, ya THINK
20 years from now, there will be Metal Gear convention just like Star Trek. And 'Gearies' like Doom will be standing there in too-small 'I heart katanas' t-shirts demanding to know why MG43 'Flacid Cobra' has minor texture set differences from the superlative MG42 'Wet Weasel' (Japan-only) release...

=========================
Metal Gear Ascii Horizontal Timeline
=========================
1930's: Big Boss is born
1961-1964: Big Boss in Russia on mission for whatever MGS3 is.
- Big Boss loses his right eye
Between 1972 to 1977: Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, (maybe?) Solidus Snake are born via the Les Enfants Terribles project (clones of Big Boss)
- Note: For some reason Solidus looks much older in MGS2 than Solid or Liquid, and is the only one of the three to actually look just like Big Boss did in his late age)
Between 1982-87: Raiden (Jack) is born. Let us never mention him again.
1999: Outer Heaven. The basis of the first Metal Gear game.
- Solid Snake, a rookie from special forces unit Foxhound, infiltrates Outer Heaven
- Snake finds our missing Grey Fox
- Destroys Metal Gear for the first time
- Learns of Big Boss's betrayal. Fights Big Boss, wins, escapes as the base is self destructing.
- Supposedly Big Boss does not survive.
2001: Zanzibar. The basis of the second Metal Gear game. Turns out Metal Gear development continued. Go figure.
- Solid Snake infiltrates, finds out that Big Boss is still alive and in charge.
- Find outs Grey Fox (Frank Yaeger), whom he "rescued" in Outer Heaven and had since became his best friend, is working with Big Boss.
- Snake and Fox battle each other to the death in a mine field, Snake wins Fox dies.
- Snake destroys Metal Gear, again, and fights Big Boss, again.
- Big Boss reveals that Snake is his son. Snake kills him anyway.
- Snake gets Post Tramatic Stress disorder and relocates to Alaska.
2003: Ghost Babel. Some country I forgot has a Metal Gear, Snake goes to stop em. Nothing major happens concerning the story of the whole series.
2005: Shadow Moses. My favorite one of the series!
- The US DoD (the department, not the mod nubs) has adopted Metal Gear development. Its no longer some slimey third world country project, its now a slimy first world country project.
- Foxhound turns traitor. Damn those Foxhounds. Oh wait, their whole history is full of trechary...
- Foxhound + Genome army (brainwashed by Psycho Mantis) take over facility housing new Metal Gear
- Solid Snake goes in, finds out Liquid Snake is his twin brother.
- Not only that, they're CLONES. Byproducts of test tubes, not contraceptive failures.
- Solid Snake kills everyone and finds inner peace, becomes an anti-war peace loving hippy.
2007: Tanker. aka the good part of MGS2.
- Solid Snake learns about Metal Gear Ray, then goes swimming
- Solid Snake is framed by the Illumanti for blowing up the tanker, so he fakes his own death via Liquid's body. Having a dead twin is fun
2009: Big Shell. aka the rest of MGS2. Nothing really important to the series storyline happens, since the game is about Ra err blondie.
- Solidus Snake is the third brother, who despite being a twin clone looks nothing like Liquid or Solid, and even look a bit older. After losing an eye, he looks just like Big Boss.
- Solid Snake really is a pacifist hippy now. A pacifist hippy who kills everyone and finds inner peace, again.
2013: After years of research, DOOManiac has finally powered his flux capacitor with 1.21 gigawatts and goes back in time to kill Raiden when he's just meeting his high maintainence girlfriend.
