Patlabor is one of the greatest series of all time. It's just severily overlooked.
I've read about Patlabor and am regularly searching for it in the resident import stores - what other series places the giant robos in the hands of <i>construction workers</i>? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I used to think it was pronounced "Plat-abor" till I actually watched one of the tapes <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Patlabor is the best! The mechs just look cool and I like the fact that the series devles into the characters more than the action but the action sequences such as the labor fights such as between the one between Alphonse and the Griffon balance that out as bein really good. Even though the the series was trying to touch into more realism in the mechaa, I think even the mecha designer was commented to saying that they were not designed realistic enough as they should be. The comedy in patlabor is gold though. Hehe
3rd movie was a somewat disspointment. It was more like watching a generic detective story if u took out the labors. I was only watching it because of the labor fight scene in the end part. The 2nd movie was the kewlest of all the three.
Just to note though, trying to find artbooks for the Patlabor series ESPECIALLY of the TV series is damn hard.
Others like Azumanga Daioh, Love Hina, Full Metal Panic, Gasaraki, Blue Sub No. 6, Golden Boy, Chobits, Hand Maid May, Excel Saga, Gunsmith Cats, Ah! My Goddess, Vampire Hunter D, Cowboy Bebop, Zone of the Enders, Ranma 1/2, and so on...

Patlabor is a very well thought out technical series. Instead of relying on the mechs every episode (Gundam), Patlabor focuses more on the social interaction of the characters and the creation of a very feasible future. If you watch the Mini-pato OVA they explain the reasons why the Ingrams were designed the way they are, why the need to be transported to the scenes on the back of a truck, the specific type of ammo they use, etc, etc.
While not a comprehensive guide to Patlabor it is still probably the best way to get a basic understanding of the universe Patlabor resides in.
Hell, Patlabor was discussing computer viruses before the term had even been spread to the degree it is now.
To the people who just posted what they think is the best series..... I have nothing to say to you, except for you Smokenova. The name of the series is Berserk, not Berserker.
MonsE, you'd probably enjoy the new Macross OVA (Macross Zero) Robotech is a combination of 3 anime series. Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada (In that order and all totally unrelated) Lin Min Mei is from Macross, so that's where you see all the cool Valkyrie Fighters (The transforming mechs with 3 different modes) Macross Zero is a prequel to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross and all the battle scenes are in 3D and it is just breathtaking. I'll see if I can find some screenshots somewhere.....
