I tried my friend's 7 day trial, and I must say, I <i>hate</i> this game. It goes something like this:
1)Try to find outfit 2)Give up, get vehicle, go to random continent 3)Drive for five minutes to get to battle 4)Die 5)Rinse and repeat
Not only is the combat completly repetitive and boring, but there isn't any point to it. Taking bases never seems like a big deal, and the complete lack of storyline makes it feel like a big team deathmatch that won't end. It might turn out to be an okay game in the future, but as it stands now, it totally blows.

I dont see how game developers can turn a great game concept into absolute cr*p. From the previews I read about Planetside it could have been the evercrack killer.
And the gaming industry expects us to pay for it, and looks surprised when everybody pirates it <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I'm addicted... and the oufit I'm with is very organized, and is perhaps the only reason I'm not going to stop playing this game.
...and the 9/10 of the people who think that the game is crap are exactly who I don't want playing. >:) As soon as fileplanet opened up after the closed beta, the griefers started showing up, and the game became much less fun... I was hoping that those people would not return.
Shortened version of the game: Good idea, below average execution, but a damn good idea <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
My info: Fleshstalker (Vanu Sovreignty, Markov West), Faction: The Divine Order; Divine Supplicant, Sniper/Magrider Pilot, Battle Rank 6, Last time I played was May 15th (Matrix Reloaded Premiere[sp?]). BTW, Spyder, I'd be interested in joining your Outfit if I decide to go at Planetside again (I'm still abit apprehensive since going up against the TR is hell. They're all just spray n' pray. VS actaully REQUIRES skill to play).

Griefers are a problem in any game, especially in open betas.
I love the game. I hate the majority of the people in it. Its still fun as hell to play, but only truely shines as a great game once you get attached to a good squad and do a massive base assault. Most of you played the beta I am guessing and gave up on it. Ah well. Its one of the few games that are actually worth a monthly few. The first time I had a 200+ person battle with air support, tanks and infantry running around everywhere with minimal lag, I was hooked.
The balance is good, but not perfect..but with the easy update system, they can remedy that with time. I have yet to have one battle play out like any other battle, its so great. A game is what you make of it, and I dont play it like a MMO RGP(ugh...rpg's....*sigh*). Thats the mistake a lot I see are doing. They forget that the point is to win this epic war, and instead get fixated on battle exp. Which is kinda sad and ammusing.
The interface is excellent with a few not so user friendly details. On my Radeon 8500, it had nice graphics that flowed at 20fps(HUGE BATTLES) to 85fps(queit). But mostly was around 50's during decent normal combat.
The lag is pretty much minimal on most servers, except at peak times and during huge battles. Emerald gets laggy on late friday nights I have notice.
The different ways to build your character and all the weapons, items and vehicles make this an awesome game as well.
The story line is pretty dang good, and takes up quite a few pages in both the manual and the website fiction setup. But, considering the nature of the game, a story-line is not really needed at all.
Again, a lot of people dont realize that this is a huge sci-fi MMOFPS. Its nice to say the least, and its a blast at its best.
IMO. A lot of people here will be biased. NS is probally the best game I have ever played, and most of the people here probally get into that whole "Free mod" mentality, where paying for a sourse of entertainment is "corporate" and evil.
If you buy three games a year its the same cost as buying this one game and playing it for a year. So the whole money thing is not quite relevant.
As for you 9/10 people thinking its crap. Ok, 9/10 NS players think its crap, awesome. As long as the people splaying PS like it, thats all that matters.

1.)I dont see how you did not find a squad. Did you click the LFS(looking for squad button) Or ask anyone if you could join. Or for that matter, why not just start your own and get a group of people. Be social and ask people, make some online buddies. 2.)Useing your map, you can quickly identify any continent that has action, or you can even check the local or global broadcasts to see where you are needed. And(getting to point 1) there are always squads broadcasting for people to join. 3.)It takes a big to get around, thats why there are so many vehicles. Its part of the MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE experience. It would not be very massive of a world if it was only 30 seconds across. A Galaxy crusier is very fast though, and if you catch the HART you can hotdrop anywhere in a few seconds. 4.)It happens in most FPS, you respawn and try a bit harder, and hopefully learn something. I die a lot too, as long as I kill a lot its fun. 5.)Any game is repetitive if you get general enough. //NOTICE: I love NS// For instance, I could say that NS is boreing because all we have do is kill an alien, grab some res, grab a weapon and a kill a hive...always the same.
I hope this at least shows that there are people who do love Planetside here.

Honestly, I haven't even <i>played</i> and I like the Vanu the most, why would anyone choose anything else? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> I like em because they aren't in a f*king tin can and they have all those sekseh lazer weapons.

i either have a choice of planetside or star wars : knights of the old republic *for a console*, so is planetside anygood ? and do you have to pay for an account ? e.g £15=1 month £30=2 months
If the EXP system wasnt so damn terrible it might be a good game to play, however, charging a montly fee for a shooter is plain outrageous. The persistant world feel is a good start for the future of shooters, but controlling land in that game makes no differance in the big picture. I played in the Exclusive and Open betas, I'm assuming Drivers/Engeneers/and medics still dont get EXP for doing their class skill (healing driving fixing) so there really is no point in playing anything other than a MAX which makes it boring
Of course, MAXes can't hack bases, so there's very little XP to be had there. The only way to get XP quickly is with squads. We get anywhere from 3000 - 5000 XP for base captures, and about 1100-2000 for base saves/rehacks.
MAXs are fun, i played a comet at low levels... good times, but not as good as my lasher / lancer / reinforced deal that i have going on now. when you shoot down 5 wraits 6 MAXs and 12 infantry all in one sitting while defending a base, yeah, you feel like the freaking champion. things like that just make you feel good. the game has a massive good feel to it.
MAXs got nerfed today (monday) I have to check that out. I only ever had problems with pounders in towers though.
PS is the first game ive ever played that takes your playtime and GIVES YOU SOMETHING FOR IT. I remember one time i played NS for 17 hrs consecutivly, sure i had fun but i didnt get anything out of it the next day when i sat down and played again. PS implements a system of XP (while still in infintile stages) that gives you something for playing 17 hrs and locking 2 continents. Command rank, battle rank, getting certs for guns i want to use; all part of the game giving back for the time and money you put into it.
Money is next up. my outfit mainly consists of people that played DAOC on Kay, another 12.99 a month MMO... we were some of the best and most organized in that game too and we just transfered over. saturday we locked amerish, we brke the lock on 2 other continents and overall had a metric assload of fun. finding fun and organized people to play with is always good. the reason i pay for it is because its fun. probably the funnest game ive ever played. i wouldnt mind spending 23 hrs a day getting my ranks up and having so much fun i could pass out for a pathedic measly 13 bucks a MONTH.
NS does not have repetitive battles, with a masive PLANET to play on and literally millions of combinations of enemys batteling with endlessly varrying equipments fighting all around the world. i would love to see any one of you standing on the battlements of Verica killing all kinds of enemy planes, MAXs, vehicles and infantry... and the 5000 XP message comes up leveling you. I would love to see you right there sitting on top of the amp station with a cap load of XP saying that PS isnt fun.
Btw., I'm thinking of trying this out, but rather worried about the system requirements. Currently I have an Athlon 900 Mhz, a GeForce II MX and 256 MB RAM. I know the RAM is a bit on the low side, but even if I up it to 512, do I even stand a chance without a major overhaul? Or should I wait until I get a new compy? Btw., I am quite capable of playing with 20 fps (and willing to stay out of the giant battles if that's what it takes), can I expect something like that at most times?
I haven't tried Planetside yet. Like I said a while ago, almost the whole clan of [TMM] were skipping practices and the like just to play Planetside. From some, I hear it's horrible; others, not. I won't judge it yet, not with a vote that was done on this site that had almost 50-50 on good and bad.
I got to BR 16 in the beta, I think I more than put my time in <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.
