Since this has been bumped, I might as well point out what has changed since TeoH's post was written.
Firstly, the effect of breaking the speed cap of 1.7*base speed has been altered. Rather than being slowed to base speed after exceeding it, you are only slowed to the cap itself.
Secondly, bunnyhopping as a marine has been severely limited. Upon touching the ground after a jump, a very potent deceleration is applied for a brief moment, leaving you at only 30% of your previous speed. If you are not bunnyhopping, this has no real effect, as you can start moving again immediately to regain base speed. However, if you attempt to jump the instant you land, you will begin the jump with very little speed, thus taking away the original point of jumping the instant you land.
There is, however, an exception to this rule. Whether it is applied depends on how much time you spend in the air before landing. The deceleration is only applied if the duration of your jump exceeds a certain time span. If it does not, the deceleration will not be applied, and you will be able to bunnyhop. This means that you can still bunnyhop up slopes or other map architecture, because in those cases you spend less time in the air. In addition, this time span itself varies. I have found that it varies proportionally with your base speed. This means that with heavy equipment, you will not be able to bunnyhop on many of the shallow slopes or only slightly elevated pieces of map architecture that you could bunnyhop on as a stock marine. Similarly, with a catalyst pack and sufficiently light equipment, you can actually bunnyhop across a flat plane without suffering the deceleration effect.
As a reminder, this only applies to marines. Aliens can still bunnyhop as normal.
Ugh. Listen instead of spending time learning about scripts right now, just bind mousewheel down and up to +jump in your options. You can't script any part of bhopping except the jumpspam needed to instantly jump upon landing, so if you have a mousewheel just use that for now. Google how to bunnyhop and hopefully you will find some pictures and instructions. Once you pick it up it's like riding a bike. Even if you do still end up riding the bike into the occasional tree.
anyway if you just want to use spacebar for your jumping needs:
alias j "+jump;wait;-jump;wait" alias threej "j;j;j"
put this in your userconfig.cfg. If you don't have one make one with notepad. then bind space threej and save in options.
I think that works. But seriously, you can't just jump around a lot or hold random directions while doing so. Bhopping is something very specific. Generally you'll know when you're doing it. Pick ns_nothing and start your own game and practice bhopping in viaduct hive after you've gone around and gotten your facts straight on bhopping. There's plenty of good information out there.
I wonder what two skulks bumping into each other at bhop speeds would look like on the source engine.

The way it would work would be to set fps_max and cl_yawspeed to arbitrary values, then hold down your strafe and yaw keys in conjunction - executing a bunnyhop movement mechanically.
Of course you'd still need to know how to bunnyhop because this is exclusively good for going in straight lines or any even more cumbersome static pattern, but it could turn out to be really nifty if you get the numbers just right (yawspeed and fps). Eh, might try that over the weekend.

Ahh, much more devestating than the regular bunnyhop, due to the unexpected "fling" you get after the first jump. With good FPS, you get propelled forward after each jump, and then slowed down upon landing. This is usually what you see in place of those in public servers who can't bunnyhop, but make due with this.
Regular bunnyhopping is done with simultaneous left and right strafe/mouse movements, with perfect jump timing, and holding your duck key. It takes time, and a good PC (not necessary, but helps tenfold) to master, but nonetheless, it is almost necessary to have for competitive play.
And though I've not read the entire thread, if anyone here has replied with "bunnyhopping is an exploit, don't use it", then they need to realize that Flayra did announce, quite some time ago, that bunnyhopping was part of the game, and gives aliens their "character".
A good bunnyhopping tutorial can be found on NSLearn.org (http://www.nslearn.org), with a demo as well, but I do believe it needs to be updated, due to it being a b4 demo. =\
Not quite sure how old this is, but ill put my two cents in. Download ns_bhop if you want to learn. If you haven't bhopped at all, I'll tell you how I learned. Boot up Cs (eewww) and go to cs_assault (lots of open space outside). Type sv_gravity 0 in console. And tap crouch so you are hovering. Once hovering you wont be able to move very quickly by holding forward. So, hold a and slowly look left. You should gain a little speed, make a few circles and try to work in a right turn with d. It is very important that you dont push w at all, it wont work. After you get the hang of this, switch over to NS.
Open up ns_bhop or some other map with a large open area. Type "bind" "mwheelup" "+jump" and "bind" "mwheeldown" "+jump" in console. Go to the alien team and spawn as a skulk. Run in a straight line and jump and perform the same move you did on assault. But this time, jump when you do it, and on the landing spam your mousewheel and turn. After some practice you should be able to gain considerable speed.
If you want practice as a marine, load up ns_tanith and go to waste (the hive on the left side of the map.) There is a rather large ramp there. Drop all your weapons and you can bunnyhop up the ramp using the motions described above. If you need a little help doing it, type sv_cheats 1 in console, then type bind f "give item_catalyst". Now, when you push f you'll get a cat pack, which makes bhopping a lot easier. Hope this helps.... If you have any questions or need help, Pm me.
