I'm lookin to build a computer of my own, but I only have a budget of around $1000. Think you guys could point me in the right direction? Funny thing is I worked as a techie all during my 4 years of highschool, I could fix any problem there, but I have no idea where to begin on building a computer.

But as far as video cards are concerned, I think the lighting will be what seperates the men from the boys. SO if you want the fancy lighting with high res and a good framerate, go with a 9800Pro 256. But if the fancy dynamic lighting isnt all that and a bag of chips for you, a GF4Ti will suffice.

I'm gonna have to get alot more ram and a new videocard but for the most part Im set.
if i somehow magically come into money, ill probably think about getting around amd athlon xp 2GHz [somewhere around there], a gf4 ti 4200 or 4600, depends on the price, 512 to 1 GB ram, and another 80 GB hdd edit: right now i have 600 mhz, gf2 mx 400, 256 mb ram, 80 GB hdd and 60 gb hdd
I plan on building a new HL2 pc towards the end of summer. This is what I'm looking at.
Athlon XP 2600+ 333FSB Asus A7V8X-X Mobo KT400 Chipset (AGP8X, FSB333, DDR400, USB2.0) 1GB DDR333 Ram (Benchmarks have shown DDR333 is faster than DDR400 w/ the KT400 chipset) ATI Radeon 9500 Pro or 9700 Pro (Would Love 9800 Pro 256MB, too expensive though) Audigy2 IEEE1394 120GB 7200RPM 8MB HDD
I might buy a GeforceFX if it wasnt for the fact I need to prime and pull start the leaf blower strapped onto its back. Oh, and it only takes diesel, WTH?!
I thought the fact that the thing could vacuum my desk while I game was an upside, then I heard all the horror stories...some guy had his router near his GFX...he never saw it again after hearing a large *KTHUNK*KTHUNK*BZZZZRRR*
