1.1 Beta For Constellation Members?

ashwashw Join Date: 2003-01-26 Member: 12831Members, Constellation
I've been a constellation member for a few months now and I still haven't seen any benefit (apart from maybe food in the ns team's stomach while they code).

any chance of the beta being opened up to constellation members as a bit of a repayment for the support?

It's more about donating to the NS team to help the development than paying for a reward of some sort.

That said, there are the in-game icons that you get for being a member.

Yeah you shouldn't expect anything in return.

Though if Flayra wants to make a public beta I suppose using Constellation members is a nice idea.

Other than that you should consider it more of donation than anything else. Because that's what it is, you aren't buying a subscription or the game itself.

If he gave everyone in constellation beta, it would probably just slow things down. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

However, the constellation members will be thanked... I imagine, when v1.1 comes out, and Flay will probably say something like:

"...and thank you to all of the constellation members, this couldn't have been possible without you."

    So that can be your reward! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

The benefit is: without the constellation donations, NS 1.1 would have been cancelled and NS would not have been continued after 1.0. As simple as that. So the biggest reward from your donation is that you will get to play the next version of NS.

Yes, your reward is that you get to play the game when/if it should ever be finished. But since they're running out of letters in the alphabet to assign to test builds, I'm sure it'll only be another 2-3 months

Hate to break it to you, but contrary to what many big publishers seem to think by adding public betas to their PR routines, beta testing is not all fun. Beta builds are by definition less balanced, less polished, and more buggy than a regular release. Beta testing means helping to remedy that. In other words: Beta testing == work.
  • KEm1KaL1KEm1KaL1 Lerky Lerky Join Date: 2003-02-21 Member: 13797Members
Does not need to be "in other words" nem, I've tested (professionally and unprofessionally) many things and for all you doubters out there, beta testing <b>is</b> work.

Yeah, but the fun is seeing an unbalanced pile of code evolve into a brilliantly made piece of software.

I remember the constellation members getting "added benefits at a later date" or something like that, i can't be bothered to look <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    FINALLY!!!

I have been waiting for someone to mention this quite some time. My first reaction when the beta tests started was:

"Uh oh.. better stay away from that, sounds like work. I'll keep playing this less buggy version for *fun* until they're all done with 1.1"

Can't believe people do it for free, or that they *want* to do it. Weirdos.

Ps. Ahh... I was wondering why that "icon" thing never worked, I thought I would get it right away (some time ago).

No, the constellation database system has a client-side component. But by the first time you start up 1.1, you should see your new icon.

Just because it's work doesn't mean it isn't fun. But yeah, it's a donation. You didn't donate so you could get special treatment, you donated because you loved the game. That doesn't mean that beta testing for constellation members is a bad idea, but I wouldn't bother asking for it either.

As a soon to be constellation member, I don't believe I should get any acess to things just because I donated. Its like donating to a politician and then expecting them to cut YOUR taxes by 100% just because you gave them a few bucks. betatesting, isn't fun a lot of the time, other times it just owns. Also beta testing isn't so you can see the game before everyone else, it's to fix potential problems like crashes so that the public doesn't have to experience them.

i'd say about 90% of the public would not want to betatest.
  • abtmabtm Join Date: 2003-04-08 Member: 15337Members
Actually, in RE to what was said about "balancing" you can have balancing, and then you just have people who want to make the game an all out fair fight for everyone. Balancing can be done till it's ad-nauseum, but after a while (And from what I've seen/read in the tester forums) no one really is interested in it anymore. I think balancing NS 1.1 has beend done until everyones heads are spinning.

Bah, you can't fool me! I got to be in the beta group for Science and Industry .97 and the email they sent to inform me of this was the best email I have ever received. I spent hours oogling at the new features and got to make suggestions that made it into the mod and helped track down bugs that were eventually eliminated. Okay, well, I guess that would seem like work to most people.
