<div class="IPBDescription">Grates....</div> I have a level with a grate, and on the other side I have "sky". What class of entity do I put the grate on and stuff?

    Set the grate to 'func_wall' (mostly the default brushbased entity), rendermode 'Solid', renderamount '255'.
