I think for single-player half-life you could use this in software mode to get effects sprites to be drawn quicker on a dated system. I had the same problem with my mouse filter, whenever I checked it, it would uncheck right when I would go back into the game. What I did, I went to the planet half-life forums and asked there, they gave me a command that I could type in my console, which I added to my autoexec.cfg (so it loads everytime hl starts).
