Do Marines Need A "hive Sight"?

NS is a big game, and a lot can be happening at one time. For the alien, they can look around and see where their teammates are, and if they or their buildings are under attack. The marine on the other hand, require just as much teamwork as the aliens (if not more) yet they have no such way to tell where their teammates are, or if their buildings are under attack. True, the commander gets a nice little message saying "your base is getting killed" yet the comm has enough to do, without having to relay these messages to his marines. It would really help marines who were trying to work together if they could see where their teamates were, and if their res towers or other buildings were being attacked.

    This lack of "hive sight" will be more than compensated for by the new minimap (hopefully).

    How about a communications chair. one marine could sit in this chair and issue alerts about whats under attack lol. would help lower the commanders load a bit.

    Giving marines hive sight will make them too autonomous, which imo is bad. Also i feel ns is special for keeping the 2 teams different.

    Marines should be in visual range of each other at all times, ANYWAY. Unless the commander splits them into squads and sends the squads to different places. Then each squadmember should be in visual range of each other at all times.

    When I read the description of the aliens along time ago, it said they could communicate without having to talk to eachother. That refers to the aliens seeing eachother and what is under attack, aswell as parasited things.

    If marines could see eachother it makes the teams too similar. The two teams are balanced. If you gave the marines the same radar type thing as aliens, it would unbalance things.

    Hell no.


    This would entirely throw off all balance to the game. Not to mention make the teams similar.

    The entire concept of the marine team is to rely on the commander...


    If it's too much to deal with as a comm, deal with it and get better; also 1.1 promises a better command interface.

    So something like this is worthless.

    maybe it would be good if the marines could see their own on te minimap??

    just an idea but with the 1.1 version the comms will be able to command and organise their troops a lot better so this problem should disappear, if not be greatly decreased.

    actually, if the team has a brain and keeps only one gorge that one gorge is the comm. he issues orders and tells the team when to rush/what to guard.

    Currently the minimap is kinda useless, it shows the structure of the map (which I know by heart now) and nothing else. Since the range of the minimap is fairly short, I always found it logical to have other marine's positions plotted on the minimap. Sadly, this isn't the case, so right now the minimap is just a square blocking my view, nothing else. I'd suggest putting other marine's position on the minimap, perhaps with a medium-length refresh rate (2-3 seconds?). Just small yellow dots or something like that, just enough to let you find teammates in your vicinity. Would make it easier for the marines to stick together, which is what they're supposed to do.

    I've always thought that just a green blip representing your teammates on the little radar minimap in the upper right corner would suffice and be a GREAT change. There have been so many times where we're all suiting up in HA to make a concentrated attack, and as I'm still trying to grab some ammo, the rest of the team heads off somewhere and I have to ask them 2513454 times where the hell they are and if they'd wait for me to catch up ('cause an HA without a welder monkey nearby is as good as dead!)

    not really...this is one of the comm's primary tasks, due to the lack of hivesight, he is able to provide the overview of the game

    when i comm i always tell my team what is under attack, whether backup is needed and how urgent it is, just to give them a picture of the progress of stuff going on

    but yes...just a short range blip on the minimap showing nearby teammates will be enough, i never look at it as it is, frankly i forgot it was there until it was mentioned in this thread <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Showing teammates was in the mini-map once before and it will be included again in a future version, I have little doubt. I'm not sure it will be in 1.1 as Flayra said the HLTV method was taking too long. (ie. had problems that would take too long to fix and he needed to focus on other things... I gathered) If the that one gets in, it will also show building locations and other things.

    well whenever im comm on servers sometimes their are nubs that ask for WP's to hives no matter where they are so how bout possibly adding into cl_autohelp 1 a thing that shows where all the hives are... and yes tellin teammates where stuff is happening is important but that is why you should have a mic when ur comm... makes things 100 times faster..... so get a mic and dont be shy <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    No. Part of being a good commander is co-ordinating your team properly. Part of being a good marine is to follow orders even if you don't know what else is going on, or why you're been given the orders you've been given. I'll get easier to manage marines with th enew interface in 1.1. Marine "hivesight" or equivalent would detract from the game too much (inho, movement tracking already does detract from the game) and it would mean that marines are more autonomous - that's not a good thing.

    No way. Nothing like hivesight for marines ever. SoulSkorpion just pretty much explained it right there along with others.

    I'm sure its a real temptation to always be tacking on "new goodies" as a game ages. But you do that each time at the risk of upsetting the reason for its success. Seems to me that is exactly why 1.1 has been in beta as long as it has been. They can't shoot for all the huge changes they want and just expect the game to still have the original dynamic. One "tiny" modification like giving marines their version of hivesight can so easily destroy it all.
