I prefer paperback. It's immensely cheaper, easy to take around and I dont feel guilty about beating the hell out of it. Rule is, the worse shape a book is in, the more I enjoyed it.

hehe i am 18 working at and construction testing company doing undergraduate engineering work.

I come in this morning (Monday in Australia) and I say well i got the new harry potter book yesterday and I have finished it already, it was fantastic.

My 57 year old boss says, "dont tell me anything, I pick up my pre-order today. My wife is already started on hers."

If your too old at 22... tsk.

Listen carefully, cause this will be the first and possibly only time i am not a cynical negative ****. Two words.

Im glad the books are getting less childish. I mean is this book, they have an encounter with "dragon dust" which is kind of like a drug to make you magically high, and then harry jerks off, sleeps with a girl, and has a threeway. Ron becomes a pimp. I forgot, harry also has a **** orgy at his house.

eh, i didn't like the book that much, i still think goblet of fire is the best.

harry had waaaay to much teenage angst, mood swings, anger, whining, etc that continually **** me off, and the only significant action in the book took place in the last 200 pages.

not to say that i didn't like the book or that it wasn't great...

It's a bit like the CS phenomenon, although not quite so bad (I despise CS, but I don't dislike Harry Potter) - CS isn't revolutionary in its design; there's nothing inherently fantastic about it. Yet it has more people playing it than any other online game because they seem to think that CS is the only game in which you can connect to a server and fight against other people with guns.

The Harry Potter phenomenon irrtates me because there are so many people who think HP am teh win and haven't so much as heard of any other book which features magic, mythical creatures, magical places in which the inhabitants regard magic as mundane (Enid Blyton, anyone)? But unlike CS, the HP series are actually decent books. They are imaginative and a relatively good read. I just don't think they're good enough to warrant the innumerable legions of fans.

I agree though, bandwagoners must die.

Harry Potter books surprised me with the flow and the quality of the content. I used to be a skeptic back in the days, but until I picked it up and read it I didn't realise how well written they were.

Honestly, what it breaks down to is the people who actually take the time to read it and then base their analysis on what they've read. Or the people who just jump on the ignorance band wagon and rag on it for no reason.

to my defense i will say i know my bunch of RPG-systems - Warhammer: Fantasy Roleplay, Dungeons & Dragons, Shadowrun, Vampire: The Masquerade, other Systems i don't know that much about Mage: The Ascension WereWolf: The apocalypse Warhammer Battle (both Fantasy and 40K). And that's just pen and paper games well at the moment i read HP i only knew about Warhammer and D&D, but anyway...

well i think one of the reasons they are so popular is that it's set in our own world - so many more people can relate to it - rather than a medieval times scene.
another reason could be that they are written in a "easy" language, and the first book was suitable for kids...

I've read a good bit of HP, and I honestly don't lke it. I admit Rowling can write well, but the plot, and character development (along with characters themselves) get old real fast. I get tired of listening to Harry, Hermione, and Ron whining all the time, talking about how their going to get in trouble and kicked out, etc. They don't change, all they do is whine. Thats about all I can knock it for, other than that the books do create a detailed universe which pulls you in.

I'm not much of a fantasy fan. If I read anything its gotta be something intellectual, with some exceptions of course. But I really do like reading political and analysis books.
