A wave of skulks
The clicking was almost defeaning by the time he got to the front, shouldering his way through more than thirty Marines, ready to give their lives to protect the phase gate and the resource tower that they needed so desperately.

They could hear the panting of the skulks. They reminded Tom of dogs. He just didn't plan on petting any of them.

All eyes stared intently on the bend, from which came the resounding clicks of skulk claws. The dozens of sentry guns sat on their tripods, spinning idly, oblivious to the targets that would soon skid around the corner. Tom sucked in a deep breath as he sensed them about to appear, steadying his aim and squeezing one eye shut.

"Here they come boys!" came a brave shout from a Marine, slicing the air through which little dialogue had passed.

"Let's give 'em HELL!"

Skulks poured around the bend like a stream of water, sliding unhindered over one another, along the walls and along the ceiling, towards the Marines. Their advance was brave and selfless, holding nothing back for self defense.

The clicking was finally muffled by something louder. The pop of automatic rifles. Yellow bloud exploded from the mass in bursts as skin was punctured and veins were torn through. Skulks tumbled to the floor, rolling and cartwheeling, trampled by the rest of the advance.

"There's too many!" someone screamed, running for the phase gate. He stepped stupidly in front of a turret, and was torn to shreds.

Tom ejected a dry magazine, swinging the gun as he did to toss it sideways and out from beneath his feet. The next mag slid inside, and went to work.

The skulks bore down on them, dying by the hundreds, screeching and barking, leaping from the floor and from the walls, only to be jerked backwards as bullets ripped through the soft flesh.

They fired blindly, sweeping left to right. They fired angrily because each and every one of the marines had lost someone dear to them. They fired like there was no tomorrow because each marine knew that there may never be one.

Great story! And this bought up my ideas for possible mini-games in ready rooms. Imagine "Survive the Skulk Onslaught" mini-game, putting you with an HMG, and an endless swarm of skulks.

It was excellent, but I thought you could've ended it another way - a more... thoughtful way that actually makes one think what happened to the marines.

When I read this the first time, the ending didn't seem like an open ending. But that's just me.

I can definetly see where you coming from, it doesn't look like an open ending, but it isn't said what happens, and that leaves it open for foxtrot to finish it up...

but I would much rather have him work on mess hall

I was on that game last night man, the marines were all watching the doorway because motion detectors said that's where we were coming from, but I knew better being a skulk with half a brain. So I took the high road, vents, dropped down behind them and managed to chew up three of the poor unwitting buggers before I got splattered like Monica in the Oval Office. This was a turn for the better though, it distracted at least half of the other marines and they turned to shoot me, which left the rest of the swarm to waltz in carelessly and proceed to chew marines over and over to their death though oddly there was no blood at all and they somehow managed to come back to life in fifthteen seconds. Hmmm... Any critics of reincarnation can kiss my green butt because I've seen the light!
