C&C Generals is an excellent game. It's sort of modern, but only in a general technological sense... none of the units are authentic wargame style things. Everything is very believable and realistic, however, none of that psychic dolphin crap.
i like dealing with tiny little humans in RA2, and i like just knowing that the tank is better than the little dude, where as in SC you have to learn which alien is better for what situation. theyre both good, and NS has a huge SC fanbase, so expect biased results. but they probly have good reason to love SC, so give it a try.

I'd have to go for Starcraft, oh and if its the box I think it is you get Brood Wars inculded for free.
lumberjack do you happen to know the name of this game?
and i spent a few more hours on RA.... and i finally gave in and used prism junk.... ( i tried to do it without using anythign not real)
but after around 4 iron curtain and nuke attacks i gave up and my god those prism things do wonders.....
but yeh i have started winning games now!
i build up my base quickly get my paras up and running (muh my american blood makes me be american, did anyonenotice they said usa had the best paras.... err no... Uk Paratroopers are some of the best skilled men ever. infact the SAS is made up of around 50% paras )
but yeh and then i do a paradrop to a key point on the map, paras dig in.. then i build around 2-3 more airbases... and lots of harriers... then i Glass theyre base... drop in a wave of Paras and while doing this i built 4 ttransport choppers and 20 GI's and i loaded them up dropped them off just outside the base then sent in the GI's to mop up andit worked perfectly...
but still.. apart form generals (running a 633 celeron....) are any of the otehr C&C series worth it? yuris revenge etc?
Ugh, don't bother with Yuri's Revenge if you dislike sci-fi crap invading your game. Psychics left and right, mind-controlled squid being countered by dolphins... ugh. It's a fine game except for the unbelievability of it all. I think even Tiberian Sun was better in that respect. Huge mechs and energy barricades in the future I can see, but psychics and such are just odd.

There's only one thing I didn't like about starcraft (I was late playing it - only got it last summer) - there's no way to hax the screen resolution up a bit. Though that's hardly a major flaw. Even what I'd read (offputtingly) about the 12-unit selection limit didn't bother me at all, despite me being a big fan of trampling bases with huge forces in ither games.
And as for the story, simply WOW. The way the campaigns blend together so seamlessly is very impressive.
---
And to be honest, the only memorable things about RA2 were the psychics' neat "Your command is my wish" comments and the awful (read: non-existant) collision detection on the soviet balloons - the way they'd overlap, making either individual selections or telling how many enemies were incoming was very shabby.
If it had problems, there would be threads all over the forum of "OMFGz HOW DOI RUN STARCARFT ON MEI PC". I think you should be fine, and if it doesn't run ou can always just get yourself a refund.

I think that the 12 unit cap adds to the gameplay, it helps prevent the "select a bunch of troops and throw them at the enemy" crap, you have to actually plan out base assaults and move your men around and use special attacks or you will get slaughtered, part of the strategy in SC is finding a weakness in a defense and exploiting it (there is always a weakness, time, money, and terrain constraints make it so, unless of course your playing BGH, in which case the only strategy is "make a huge defense then make a whole bunch of the best units your race can make and throw them at the enemy base), and if you really need more units for whatever reason you can always make hotgroups. Anyways, if you buy it (and you will if there is an ounce of sanity in you) do the single player campaign before you do anything else, the levels range from "very good" to "moments of gaming glory, right up there with your first fight with the grunts in HL, surface tension, the "so much sorrow" part in SS2, winning a game against a very good and well coordinated team with skill and teamwork of your own in NS etc..." right... Ummm... Buy it, now.

C&C generals had so much potential
...
...BUT BLEW IT with no real storyline. see, all the events with the WTC ruined gameing, along with EA games screwing everything up
what how many sims addon packs are out there now? 50?

The ONLY bad thing about SC is it's rushtastic. But then again, what Blizzard/Westwood RTS isn't?
That means in a few days (Depending on how good 2nd class postage really is) I should be playing SC Goodness
