Theories inside. Post your's, too.
Alright... As the topic says, what do you guys think makes the NS community so great? And remember, any hint of a flame war started, and I'll report this whole post myself, and get it locked.
Past that, I have 2 theories:
1) Strict moderation
Everyone here knows that the moderators are strict. Hopefully. However, this is not strict in a BAD way. It's strict in a very, very good way. At the first sign of a flame war, they lock that topic. Also, they're quick to move posts that are in the wrong forum, and always very helpful and friendly. They're also pretty darn amusing with their locking messages. This generally creates a feeling of security, knowing that there are moderators to set things right if something goes horribly wrong, and makes people happier.
2) General intelligence
Natural Selection is a game of strategy, wits, intelligents and social activity, is it not? You need intelligence to fully appreciate the game, so, naturally, more intelligent people are attracted to it. They want the most out of NS, and everyone knows that, to get the most out of a game or a mod, you need to participate in that game or mod's community, so naturally, intelligent people come to the forum. There are idiots, but see theory 1 for that.
There you go guys. Discuss your theories, or talk about others'. Just don't degrade the topic into a "I registered before you, and my post count is higher, so I know more than you" war.

Eh well all joking aside I think you're right the general intelligence is higher on these fourms and that's probably due to the game's learning curve. Also the game is still in beta so that leaves the door closed to the general nubcaek community. Once (im assuming it will) it goes public strict moderation might not be enough because there are always going to be more morons than admins. So enjoy the community while you can cause it's definently the nicest one around.
That's all the kissing up you get from me you scum sucking bastiges!

Dork. We don't hate CS players; a lot of us ARE CS players. You can't make sweeping generalizations about what hundreds of people hate.

No he's right we do hate CS players. heh. And your generalizing by saying a lot of us ARE CS players, I'm not and all my friends who play NS aren't.
PS no flame wars remember?

I'm not generalizing, I see people post "Hey, I play CS" all the time. So much for the "these forums are all nice" theory
I think it's so pleasant here because of the mods, and only them. Other boards, you have people who post topics like:
Today I bought some soap (nt)
and the admins just sit there and stare. Here, it'll be locked before sundown.
Heh, I don't play CS anymore. Can't stand it.
....
.....
......
....... Oww *rubs his temple*
Haven't been here long not a whole lot to say other than I haven't seen one topic labled like the pretext to something extremely rude or ignorant. So kudos to the forum moderators, keep up the nice work.
Back in my day we used to call people like that idiots or jerks or various other things which should be censored by the board, rather than labeling any person who plays a certain game with the same attributes with the most idiotic (and sadly most often the most vocal) group, which is of course a form of discrimination. (Ooooh flamebait).
Anyway, it is most likly due to an excellent mod team and that the game appeals to team players, who are generally more tolerent than most deathmatchy solo players. Some games that focus on soloing, especially rpgs that require significant time input, often have forums that have the worst displays of grammar, spelling, racism and overall prepubesent foulmouthed behaviour you will have ever seen for a gaming community. One that I used to frequent actually made you feel stupider for just having read it. Post's like Smart_bomb's 1.05 idea were held up as shining examples of coherency and logical thinking....*shudders*
Another unwritten rule of the forums was that you never posted a new post if the one before it was your own. Instead you would edit your first post with the new info.
Public apologies for inappropriate actions were also relativly common.
Almost all of the jokes and 'insults' were light hearted.
It was online heaven so to speak.
I miss it.
1) I'm a member. That's gotta raise it by a few points
2) The game is new, I.E, you have to have some intelligence, and some knowledge of the general gaming scene, to know about it. More people are telling their friends and stuff now though, and you can notice more and more annoying and just, well, stupid people in game. They can't be bothered to register, that's all.
3) Good Forum Mods
4) The whole game is being handled professionally, i mean, you don't get Flayra making a post like:
"OMG LOOK I GOT A NEW MODEL!"111!1111!! IT ROCKS11!!1 ITS' GOT TENTACALS!"11!1"
which just generaly keeps the crowd feeling more... i dunno, posh or grown up i guess.
5) The board layout is a nice, calming blue. ahhh, nice.
6) I'm a member
7) Because of the games new-ness, a lot of the posters know each other from games, and this just generaly restricts the "I pwn j00"-ness that you see elsewhere, because they have respect for other players

Having been around many, many mod communities in the past, I'm outright thrilled to see the NS community remain at a consistant level of decency.
In my mind, there's absolutely no question as to why the NS forums is such a great place to be. Its not a complexity of the mod keeping smart people in and dumb people out, as there are other complex HL mods out there without decent communities and there are also not-so-complex people here on these forums (I feel I can say this because I'm one of them :P). Its not that a certain breed of people play NS exclusively and aren't influenced by other communities, as probably most players play other games too. Hell, some of us don't even play NS that much anymore.
No, in my opinion it is definately they rules that govern both the forums and IRC, especially the language filter. Sure I thought it was a bit much when I first joined the community (a year and a half ago already? jeez...) but I quickly realized why they are in place, as most of you probably have as well. The rules actually force people to think a little more than they normally would. This helps keep flaming to a minimum. This also keeps the mood pleasant, which in turn makes people more friendly, which in turn leads to people making more friends, which just starts a chain reaction into more pleasantness.
Its no great secret that one of Flayra's goals with NS was to build a strong community in addition to the mod, and I feel that that effort has so far been an outstanding success. On the project I'm working on right now, we plan to have a near identical ruleset for our own forums and IRC channel, in hopes that our community too can be as great of a place to be as this one is.
/me huggles NS Community
when did that happen?
that doesn't exactly apply to privatly owned forums does it?
Conviently, this does not apply to these forums. The proof? Twex' postcount.
I agree with Mouse. Before the release of a game, the forums are usually filled with only the people who are really interested in the game, and so, it usually seems, more civil people. Whether it was the common bond of anticipation, or the dedicated people who were interested in a "non-mainstream" mod, or the desire to suck up and get in the beta test (), the boards were almost perfect back then. Then, after release, the number of members jumped hugely. Many more constructive, intelligent people were gained, and those who were less inclined to be civil were swayed by the general atmosphere of the forums. And this, combined with good moderation and plenty of interest in the game, led the boards to where they are today, which most of us would agree is a great place.
And that's my theory. But why aren't every game foroums so nice, since they all came from a "pre-release" state at some point? That question has a much simpler answer: because NS owns.

it wasnt me nem, honest.
i didnt do it.
im innocent.
you cant prove anything
nothing

But at least it's better than CS...
The reason NS is an OK community is because NS is a higher-caliber game so it usually weeds out the people without attention spans for this kind of thing.

What does objective posts about the calibre of ammunition have to do with not being nice?
"at least it's better than CS" is a bit insulting and it's a lot more than just ok, take a nap come back and repost I guess.

... Or maybe just leave him his opinion.
However there are some, like those that always blame the commander for a lost game, that really ruin the great community spirit we have here.
btw I play NS, DoD and CS. I like all the games for their merits and enjoy all equally, although I see that NS has had a lot more work put into it than CS or DoD.
word
See, NS is a kickass idea. I followed it on PHL for a while, as I'm sure did a majority of you people, and it looked awesome and sounded awesome every time I heard about it on PHL. A good idea generally attracts good people. So, here you have all the good people that have been attracted by this awesome game.
Oh, and the general intelligence part up there is pretty accurate too. Playing trivia in #evolutionarily I get my **** kicked by Thief and a bunch of other smartiepance that know everything there is to know about random useless stuff.

erm... i still remeber frequesnt flame wars that last PAGES long.
plus i cant see the line between saying what u want and mod just nuking your post/thread/country, because of all the **** kissing.
P.S. no offence implies.
P.P.S. anyone ever played sim city, when u give the police too much money then they start giving out crimes like eating without due care and attention.
this is a bit like mods and the ns forums. too many and they doing a mountain out a mole hill.
