A good friend who goes by the alias of Unit-X showed me the ns-site and told me some about NS back pre-release, the concept alone of NS got me hooked, FPS/RTS, something I had always wanted. Previous gaming: Used to play CS, and a lot of console games, big rpg and strat game fan.

one day, maybe mid or late October, i came across this news post about natural-selection, with these beautiful screenshots and this amazing trailer. (and made a mental note of the halloween release.) Nov. 1st, after a night of halloween goodness, i suddenly realized that i'd completely missed NS and promptly downloaded it. heh, played several games in a row, and was hooked... i then proceeded to sit down my brothers and friends and have them sit there play several games in a row. voil?! |eSp| was formed
and of course, after that, the NS community dragged me down, and has been holding me under ever since.
I started playing NS due to DoD. One night, I was bored and found out on fileplanet that there were other good mods besides CS and TFC. DoD was rated number one, above CS on some site so I decided to give that a try. Logged on, pwned by grenades, grenades, more grenades, someone said there was a bug with grenades, logged off. End of DoD for me. So I went on to look for something else to satisfy my urge a new and interesting mod. I found Natural Selection ranking kinda high on Fileplanet somewhere so I decided to d/l it.
The aliens were what attracted me to the game in the first place and how there are evolutions. I didn't even know the game was a FPS/RTS. Though it was just a shoot 'em up...poop on me I guess. But I love FPS and RTS and NS is a perfect combination of both. Loving the 1.04 and looking forward to 1.1 and on.
For me it was way way back when..what? a couple years ago I believe. When there were renders of soon to be aliens for NS. Back then there were lots of concept art, and lots of talk about what was being added and the upcoming secret feature; the commander mode. Yeah I remember when they released that info, and in to the developement kit that I still have.
I was hooked on to every detail untill things dragged on and on untill I decided to take a break from following every growing detail.
I was looking through PHL news, when I noticed a news item for this new mod called "Natural Selection". The site looked really interesting, but what really grabbed my attention was the combination of FPS with RTS. For me, this was the main thing that made NS stand out from the crowd, so to speak.
I then looked through the site, and I became very impressed with the pictures, especially the maps. I remember looking at screenshots for Starcraft Ghost and thinking to myself "Wow, this looks a lot like natural selection..."
You could say I "found" NS one day on planet half-life, one day when they featured an NS pic of the day. I didn't know what the mod was at the time, but I remeber my first impression was something along the lines of "my god, is that REALLY a half-life mod?"
I didn't actually know it was NS until the day the 1.04 changelog appeared on PHL. Upon seeing that, I was immediately intrigued by the concept of "Commander mode" and "aliens", so I visited the site, and went through the forums, manual, fanfic etc while waiting for the download to complete on my 56k connection.
(OFF TOPIC: I get ADSL at the end of this week I can't wait to play NS again after not playing for 2 weeks since my regular computer died. The computer i'm on at the moment is a Pentium 120 lol.)
NS came to me the saddest way imaginable... I heard about the gamespy mod of the year poll from the Thievery forums , and voted for our favorite UT mod by the way. I noticed how it wasn't the first , and cursed thoses damn realism mod maniacs getting BF1942 first. Then found a HL mod was 2nd , and went curious about it. Then I clicked on a link. Then an other one. Then downloaded the mod.
If , one year ago , I hadn't neglected this mod (thought "huh prolly an other stupid coop vs ugly aliens mod" or the like) , then I might have been part of the playtesting team... but perhaps also failed my last high school year too
A friend mentioned NS on IRC a few months ago, i did take a breif peek but couldn't be bothered downloading it (i'm on 56k). Needless to say, the MMORPG i was playing got boring, and i found the link back here. After many hours waiting, i finally managed to get it downloaded.
From about 20 minutes into my first game, i was hooked. I'd never played anything of this sort before, only RPGs, RTS, and DeathMatch style FPS, and i'm still here today.
Someone posted a link to it on the forums for the Geeks of War CS server (which I was a regular on at the time). Needless to say, I haven't been back to the server since November 1, 2002.

A kid a couple rooms down from me in my dorm described this game as "the best parts of cs mixed with the best parts of sc" I loved sc and cs was okay so I gave the mod a try. I took a break in january-feb to do some actual school work, but now I'm anxiously awaiting 1.1.
My favorite part of NS? The teeth view. Really it is. The first time I played as an alien I was all about the teeth view. Still am, I think it's one of the cleverer weapons in NS and it's always fun to bite some space marine.
Actually... my mum gave birth to me in 1986... ... ... ... ... ... ... and I finally decided to buy HL at popular bookshop for $19+
I went in, played a little TFC on pagn, and GOSH I couldn't believe how sucky I was - totally owned. I went online and searched for HL mods. Poof. o.o;? I brought this upon myself =(
I was scouting the internet for another mod for HL when i found NS.
I kept watching the news for like, 4-5 months and downloaded it (Because i was OBSESSED by: the graphics, the commander mode, the non-popular popup menu( ), the fact that it was 2 species fighting against eachother, not the regular Human vs Human, and the BUILDINGS and UPGRADES!!!) and i didn't have to regret a second of it
weeeelllll bought hl a while ago for like 10 bucks, never played the SP or half life itself, i only bought it for counterstrike... played that for a while, became fed up with the public (who didn't?) and didn't play for ages... then after a lan i decided to give it another go and started playing again needless to say i became fed up all over again quite soon, but then i discoverd a great server with a great bunch of regular players, and it was like salvation... it became the only server i played at, and i started to become a regular at the server forum. they had a section called 'Natural Selection Forum', and it was about some obscure halflive mod... i never gave it much attention, until one of the admins invited me to a game (since the ns server isn't visited that often we normally schedule our games with about 6-10 regulars)... during the long fileplanet wait i read the manual and thought... "hey, this could really be a nice game" played it once, and am hooked now...
I actually came across this mod after reading discussions about the game Savage (I can't remember where on earth this discussion board was). Someone had pointed out that a blend of RTS/FPS had already been tried: the Natural Selection mod for Half-Life. Intrigued, I checked it out, and was instantly hooked.
I just loved how.. different.. the was/is. Better than your typical RTS or FPS alone, because there are so many more possibilities, so many different permutations of skills and ideas and strategies.
It was also fortunate that my first games were on very friendly servers (sorry, I've got a memory like a sieve, or I'd mention them here). Hurrah for the NS community!

I found out about NS from this thread at planetfortress. Since it was titled "the reason why valve was delaying TF2" I just had to see what was causing the delay
1. I...don't...remember, I either found it on gamespy when I was about to click for a list of FA servers availible and I saw Natural Selection and went to the natural-selection.org loved the opening which is the kind of game I wanna play. OR I heard about it on PlanetHalfLife but both of those involved visiting natural-selection.org
2. I've sometimes wondered what its like in Warcraft when you're one of the soldiers some guy orders around, thanks to the "Commander System" or so I call it, now I know
3. I own about 8 game systems (my PC counts and so does the ones that belong to my bro) First was NES which I first played when I was about 1 year old (and of course sometimes stopped getting "Game Over" on Super Mario Bros. and I mean the first one). We promoted ourselves to SNES and I was hooked on that for a while, we had a lot of games and the most recent one I have was bought months ago. Its a Kirby game, superstar kicks ****. I then got a Sega Genesis while my brother got a Sega Saturn (how stupid of me to not want that instead, I was only 5 though I think). I had very few games which mainly included sonic and road rash while my brother had some games you probably sometimes even heard of (Virtua Cop 1 and 2, Virtua Racing, Knights). Later when playstation 1 came out, I got that and since I was young, I was stuck with some stupid games but the sweetest one I own IMO is Metal Gear Solid for PS1. Later then, I bought myself an N64 since it had some sweet games but unfourtunatly, I only bought 5 games and then N64 died (in case you wondered, it was Legend of Zelda BOTH OoT AND Mm, Shadowman, Mario Party 3, and WWF No Mercy). Later, my brother got some money by lending a neighbor a hand for a few weeks, when PS2 came out, he bought that right away, PS2 KICKS ****!!! About a year later I think, I got hacked from an online game so I decided that it was time for a new online addiction anyway, I went to best buy (with my mom so they'll actually let me buy the game) and picked up Half-Life, About 2 days after we got it, my brother downloaded Gamespy Arcade and thats how I've been playing Half-Life online, I've been playing for about a week then I found out about TFC, liked it. Then I found out about CS, hated it and then became "Neutral" with CS about a year later. Then I found out about Firearms, liked it. Then next was DoD, if only we had body armor , NS came next and I started using custom models from the models forum months later. Finally, the last mod I downloaded was Vampire Slayer (I didn't play one game). I've been gaming since I was 1 and I'm not gonna stop.
I occasionally check moddb for good mods comming out for the games I own ... most mods that get made are counter-strike rip-offs or at least very similar games so when I saw "natural selection will be released on haloween night" and saw the trailer (man that thing is rock solid) I figured this to be a great new thing and I wasnt wrong ... anyway, I almost stopped playing over the uber-lag in version 1.0
60% in... I heard about it while playing FA. I checked FA forums and heard about it again... This time I heard natural selection is a mod. I was intrigued and now I'm here and it's very late...
The Counter-Strike forums on gamefaqs.com. I usually lurk around and check up on the "what weapon do you think is best" topics. I saw a topic that said "Has CS trained you enough for this?!" and it went into a nice detailed post of how great and awesome NS was and that no one from CS could handle the greatness.. I decided to check out this great mod and have rarely touched CS since
ooooohhhhhh maaan. I used to play CS,until i got sick of that one stupid guy owning a whole team. Too bad I dont have the net at home hey? Oh wait....monday....I get ADSL.wow just rememberd that.
