our community our feelings
I remember when Star Trek came to TV. Do you remember. I can tell you what was special about it to me when it did. You see I grew up when we had just come out of the depression and world war two was still fresh in peoples hearts. We had several army bases all over the place with air raid practice sirenes going off once a week. We had a missle crisis in Cuba going on and we were all in fear of the big one being dropped on us from Russia.

When you watched Star Trek, you saw a black com officer, and japanese and russian helmsmen, and a scottish engineer. We saw the world at peace for at least one hour a week. We could forget apathy, racial hatred, fear of war. We tasted a glimpse of one mans vision of peace and just how it might unfold.

Today when I play NS online, I have had the pleasure of meeting people from Canada, England, and many other places in the world and in our great nation. I myself am part German, part Indian and part French Canadian. What I really find distasteful is when feelings get hot in game play I once in a while hear the racial slurs, nationality jokes, and morality jokes.

I am only one voice but I want to speak out on what I find offensive. I was having perhaps the most "laggy" day ever yesterday but I could see some were upset about Nationality slurs. I challenge all to "show more patience" to "remember we are all guests of the goodness of some persons heart" to be allowed to play on his Server. I believe it would be their wishes that prejudice, national heritage and racial slurs not occur on the NS public playground.

If you feel differently I want to hear it here.

Racists are jerks. Jerks don't read forums, or pay attention to other people's opinions. Despite the sentiments and ideals of this post, which I agree with, it's going to accomplish nothing.

    Have to agree with SoulSkorpion...

Your idea of how it should be, is of course the right one, the one we all try to achieve, but unortunately some ppl don't care about others feelings, and make racial comments, this is of course not appreciated by the majority...

Unfortunately all we can do is feel sorry for these sad ppl who think they are "cool"

We don't know how extreme the situation in the game was, but I believe comments like:

"How can you NOT know about crumpets?" -Robin
"How should I know, the english are strange " -Me
"Ooooh that's nice coming from a dutch person " -Robin

    Should be possible
(this is an on-going crumpet debate, and we still haven't worked it out )

So, what I'm trying to say is: play on the right servers. Some servers are bad and you can swear and curse all you want, some servers ban you for making even the slightest racial or abusive remark. Choose one where you feel at home, one that doesn't have racists and lamers, then you can play, have fun, and meet lots of people from all over the world without being annoyed by the lame ones

    Cheers

*I don't know if this is in the right forum, it should be in general discussion I think, because it is about in-game behaviour, ah well, we'll see

Well. It all boils down to how people value other people oppinions. If you decide to care enough, you can only get frustated.
There ARE people out there that enjoy other people´s torment, or sufffering. Thats what you may call llamas.

The question is. Do you really care if someone throws a racist insult, or says something demeaning OVER the internet? Do you believe that by posting your statement, your oppinion, by using your right of freedom of speech, that it will change.

Just think. There must be like.. millions of forums.. for all kinds of things.. millions of forums for porn, hacks, fetishes, games, politics, about.. human culture.

Now think. By posting how YOU would like people to change their manners, and their use of slang and offensive words to various ethnic and religious groups, in a public forum about Natural selection, in the general discussion part. Dont you think there must be MILLIONS of other threads like this spread all around the internet, around the world? Do you think that once a llama suddenly comes in and sees the thread, he will magically change his ways?

Llamas arent stupid. They are people just like you or me. They are probably decent people, maybe mostly brats, but they can get along in human society, mostly american culture. No one knows what they do for fun in the internet, they log in for a few hours, tk some people, log out, go have some fun at that bar, do some chick, whatever they do, we do.

You cant change them. By posting this thread, it wont change the fact or do ANYTHING.

It is however a nice thought. But I really wish people would get that they cant save the world. You cant save people. We have like .. 75 years or so of life. Enjoy it. Do what you like, Do what makes you happy. Posting this relieves stress, yes, but it doesnt solve anything. By discussing llamas and by having regular forum members and maybe the occasional forum troll or two replying by saying something cool and witty wont change the facts.

This is all an excuse to relieve stress. And yeah, I guess its okay. After all, I am just another voice in the billions of voices in the internet. You can dismiss my oppinion and words as easily as you can anyone else. When you learn how to do that, becoming happy will come swiftly.

    <3 for all.

As long as people don't have to be held responsible for their actions, they'll act like jerkwads.

True. Even if you were a 7 foot, ball of mean muscle, an absolute badass, and I was a 5´5 scrawny little punk, I could still insult you and get away with it.

There's a reason the NS forums have a rather tight set of rules regarding flaming and especially racial, sexual, or other bigoted slurs. And I like to think it's a better place for having those rules, though we of course get the occasional complaints.

I'm in the UK and play on a lot of European servers. I've often seen a conversation go like this

    > WTH? Why is everyone speaking german? SPEAK ENGLISH OR LEAVE, N00BS!
    > This is a German server, dummy.
  • tbZBeAsttbZBeAst Join Date: 2003-01-26 Member: 12755Members
Unfettered access to imagery of breakfast comestibles is allowed, however!

I think crumpets are nicest with honey, because it seeps into the holes, surprising you with little reservoirs of sweetness.....

and apologies if this has derailed the thread slightly, but the point stands, the majority of server-idiots won't contribute to the forum or to the community as a whole, so hopefully they'll all disappear when CS:CS comes out.....
