Is the glass half full or half empty?
Often near the end of the game, some COM's give up. Some players give up. Some desire to play to the very last breath going out gasping. To those who wish to go out with last breath it is aggrivating when the COM doesn't place that last CC in another place. To those who desire to fight, they feel the COM or a player is just prolonging the inevitable.
I played a game a couple of weeks ago where the COM didnt take defeat. He used his last bit of res to locate to a high traffic place between two hives and the marines believed in what he was doing, he also told the Marines they could do it. They didnt give up and guess what, they won.
Some times defeat can be turned around, to me it all depends on "over all attitude of the team". I want to hear everyones opinion. I felt a bit greived by a COM who gave up when two of us felt we might just have pulled it off still.
Later on today in a game, the COM said, They have two hives, game is over. I yelled out on my mike, I am not giving up. I will hit them with all I got, and some of the guys actually followed me to their virtual death. Was my glass half full, or was his half empty. Is it fair for the COM to give up on the team emotionally or does he go down with the ship?
I want to hear from you all on this little ditty,.Let er rip...............

I once played this crazy game where we were forced to relocate three times and we were still putting a signifigant dent in the other team. We had like one HA guy with 2 or 3 welders mowing down the opposition. It went on for like 2 hours... then the server crashed.
Another time our base got hit by an onos and the comm set up something like 8 inf portals in a room along with an armory and a comm chair. We put down 3 or 4 onos', one after the other, thru sheer respawn numbers. The 5th and 6th one came in at the same time, and that's when we lost.
Man, how I love to hear that!!
If I want to win games I will go commander and do a JP/HMG rush every single time...I could even bind a key to "jointeamone"...
I go random as much as I can stand being alien and I take dual gorges, OCs from the start and TFs in base with ease. Either the commander realizes TFs is bad to begin with(1.0x) and stop using them or he quits being commander after a while. Winning still makes it more fun than loosing...
To be honest, I think the games with newbies on both teams are the most fun, simply cause they provide new ideas and tactics, that expereienced user would sometimes do, and newbies from the other team wont own them because of it...
EDIT: And newbies dont really know when the game is lost either, so they wont quit / EDIT
Seriously though, I sometimes like to fight to the death, no matter what. And of course, it is sometimes possible for a seemingly hopeless situation to be turned round into a victory, and those are the best games of all.
Once I was playing ns_europa, and it looked like we were going to lose. Two hives were locked down, and the HA/HMGs were starting to move in on us. I managed to get to the marine base which was unguarded, and there was a blind-spot behind the CC. A minute of frantic chomping later and the CC was down, with no backup. After that it was only a matter of time, as the marines could no longer get any armour/weapons or health. We held them off, pushed them back, retook our hives and cleansed the intruders.
My marines were perfect, they did everything I told them to do in a prompt and efficient fashion. They only had one problem -- their aim was sorta shoddy, and they died a lot.
In return, I gave them resource nodes and upgrades -- no sense giving bigger weapons to people named 'NSPlayer' However, the amount of time it took to get set-up (due to lots of marines dying) meant that I didn't have time to secure a hive before I was forced to siege their building hive.
This turned out to be one of the most fun games I have ever played.
I set up a quick siege base (had 3W/1A) and quickly took down the hive. Any fades that gestated were quickly disposed of with level 3 weapons.
A quick scan later revealed that they were just rebuilding in the other hive. Therefore, we had to siege the other hive, and fast.
By this time a few more experienced people had joined the server, and it was becoming harder to hold against more experienced skulks, but on the other hand I had more experienced marines.
The second siege was a failure. It was a combination of weapons not getting there in time, the 2nd hive going up right when I started the siege, and extreme teamwork on the aliens side. There was seriously a couple fades there doing damage, a couple lerks umbraing, and a couple gorges healing/webbing.
It was also this time that they took back Mess Hall.
All was not lost, however. We still had Mother Interface and we had every single upgrade available. We had enough crack shots on our team to take down fades with LMGs and I had res for HMGs and accessories.
At this point, some guy joins the server by the name of 'fish' He starts begging me to let him get in the comm chair. He says he's really, really good and I figure the team could use another good shot. So I let him in. Absolute worst judgement call on my part that entire game.
What's the first thing he does? He recycles 2 out of the 3 IPs that I had set up (3 RTs means fancy stuff a bit slower than usual, so lots of LMG fighting and dying were going on -- I built 3 IPs because I noticed that the majority of my team spent their time dead.) Everyone's like, WTH?
Then, he doesn't say a word while Mother interface gets totally overrun. He says he 'didn't notice.' At this point everyone's screaming at him saying, 'I thought you said you were a good comm!'
Anyway, I guess the point of this story was, don't give up! And... don't let people comm for you at the end game, if you're still at a pivotal point! The reason that game was so darned good was because *every* moment was a pivotal point. So GG Aliens, your teamwork really pulled together at the end, and Fish, if you committed to comming you shoulda at least stayed on the server until the end so you could taste bitter defeat.
Rhuadin
Wow, an instance of Europa that the comm didn't siege all three hives from that middle double resource room. I like the europa map a lot, but its just too dang small.
On another note, it may not be worth it to relocate a couple hundred times, but its sure fun.

Your team probably respects you more for not walking away from the game. I cant tell you how many times I have caught the COM empty half way into a game, where one of us Marines had to take over for someone who "didnt things were going in the direction they wanted them to go". How about that Commander who before he begins the game who warns you. "You all better do exactly what I tell you to do or I get up and leave". WOW
I have had many from my own clan on the alien side and they are all good enough to take me out as commander. I learn from those experiences as much as I learn from the wins. That's right you guy's and you know who you are. I wonder if you dont wear braces so when you bite us it hurts that much worse.

Rush on brother, deaths door is only half full, and you've been a good marine and built your base well, you may live to spawn another day.

I played a game on Nothing the other day. As usual, marines took cargo, we started in via. Marines made a massive push for Generator room. During the frantic fight for gen, they sent 1 marine to power silo and took it over. We took power back, they took Via. Aliens WON that game. All due to teamwork. As soon as they locked down the second hive 2 alien squads attacked marine start and cargo, took out the phase gates at both places and the IPs and CC in Marine start, and killed all but the 2 HA guys building siege near Power. The marines frantically tried to relocate to the spot between the doors outside power. A gorge (me) a lerk and a skulk hit that firebase and killed the last 2 HA's just as they finished the CC. Game Over, Alien Win! The marines still had control of cargo and viaduct (siege and turret farms) but had no phases to get there and no ips to spawn.
However, when commander pull stunts like mining the 1 hive aliens into the start hive and then capping all the nodes to tech up, and several attempts have been made to break out, I see no point in waiting for the marines to get lvl 3 Armor and HA only to build a siege.
We had tried to take a hive, but we could not. I did have good shots on my team, most of them, and I had two arms lab upgrading at all times. They still had three hives though, due to the fact that that map is enormous and you get lost a lot. They assaulted out base, onos and everything. But I didnt give up, I still thought in my mind we can do this. Level three upgrades had finished and I recycled the two arms lab for some res boosts. I was planning out a flank on the alien position. After the two arms lab recycled, I barked the orders to my marines, "If I give you heavy armor, get through that phase immediatly. Dont even think about going back!" I did have a few stubborn HA that stayed back to help defeat the on comming onslaught of three hives (This place had about three onos, three fades, two lerks, and a gorge attacking.) It was complete hell at the base, and I yelled at the rest of my HA team to get through the phase while they still could. I told all the Light Marines to guard the two entrences and keep them back, which was nearly impossible from the looks of it. The phase I had lead to the double res point in the map, which the aliens had not ever found the entire time on the map. It had been fortified with about six turrets. As soon as all the HA headed towards the phase at base, I recycled the phase, and everything with it. We were ditching base. As the Heavy Armor marines looked at their fallen comrads on the round, they dashed through the phase in regret.. Just as the last one steped out on the other side, the phase shut off, and the screams of a thousand soliders echoed down the vast corridors of the complex.
The marines stood in shock as I placed down a CC for them to build along with a proto lab and an armoury. The old soliders started spawning back in. A look of relief seemed to blow accross the marines faces, but nothing could sway that inner feeling that we were surrounded, that we were finished. This desparate attempet left me with four HA's with HMG's and welders, and the rest of my crew marines. I had all the res from the recycled buildings, and I fitted up two more HA's. Proceed to your waypoint, solider echoed through their helmets, with the order to an alien hive. My marines started on their way, while the rest were oblivious to what was to come of them...again...
As the marines headed down the hallway, a wondering onos found his way to them. The marines opened fire, their level three HMGs tearing into its flesh. The beast screamed, and charged foward, goring one of the marines to death, as he finally went down. The marines wiped the sweat off their faces, and continued foward. I droped them an armoury for more ammo as they reached the hive. It was huge. Three large pillers in the water storage hive soared above their head. "The hive is on the middle piller," I told them. The marines looked at eachother, nodded, and proceeded foward. They moved up teh ramp as they met heavy resistance with four fades, and an umbraing lerk. "We've gotta take out that damn lerk" one of them said. I responded "Welder rush them guys, its only umbra." The marines did as they were told, and the lerk went down. The marines wiped out their HMG's and guned all the fades down at close range without missing a shot. They loaded another clean clip into their HMG's, and unloaded into the hive. It went down. A sigh of relief was heard from the marines, but was soon cut off by the primal scream of the onos. He charged all the marines, and knocked many of them off the ramp. Health packs and ammo rained down from above, and the marines finished off the onos, but not without losing two of their own. Another WP had ploped up on their HUD, and they moved out, ammoing up at the nearby armory. No one was in this part of the map, nothing. Only the sound of skulks echoed down the hallways, but they dared not to attack. They were keeping dibs on the marines movements. We once again charged another hive, which went down with no risistance. "Where are they at?" Asked one of the heavies. "Who cares" said another one "as long as their not here." A waypoint poped up on their HUD again, and they moved towards the last hive..
The marines at base had done scouting with the jetpacks, and res was flowing in smoothly. But one had found a danger. The aliens had massed once again, this time with one onos left, and were attacking...once again. They had only one hive at this time, but my base was shattered from the fades, skulks, and onos. I droped a CC outside the last hive where my marines were, and ploped down another two IP's with an armoury and proto lab. They assaulted the last hive with absolutly no resistance. "This is it.." one of the marines muttered. As the 'last' hive went down, the marines awaited to hear a mono tone beep. But it didnt play. I quickly scanner sweeped the other two hives as one of them was up and the other was going up. "Stay calm guys, they only have two hives now." I told them, but we had no res points. Only the fifty res I had could last us with our three HA/HMG's. But then a slight tramping was heard down the hallway. The last onos. I ordered all my marines to attack the onos, and they threw themselves at him without a second thought. The bullets of their LMGs bounced off its head armor as it gashed, gored, and threw the marines aside. The three HAs opened fire and took down the mighty beast, as his final words seeped out of his mouth..
"H4x....*ugh*"
My marines cheered in victory, only to see the following wave of fades take out our entire base in one, giant, corrdinated attack. The game was over. And DAMN IT WAS BORING TO COMMAND!!!
Well, I'm a crappy writer, but thats actually what happened. We relocated a lot and the game lasted for three and a half hours. This could be made into a movie, just not the way I wrote it.

Hiding while your whole team is dead: Bad
Trying a solid relocation when the main base is overrun: Good
Spamming Comms/IPs/Mines to prolong the end: Bad -In a vent where the marines cant get out after spawning: Really Stupid and Bad
Going Gorge in a Hive when you know your only hive is going down: Good, most times
Going Gorge in a vent to build DCs and hide: Bad (see 2)
"OMG, f4 they have 2hives/JP/Fades/Gorges/Shotguns/Mines": Bad
Sure, we all have the good comeback game story, but how many of us have a lot of them? Sometimes you just have to call it a day and GG. Just some thoughts
It was pretty damn funny, I was the only 1 with a jp and when the aliens came and killed everything i scooted off to a different comm chair (they never bothered destroying one after the ip was dead) and rebuilt a base, we actually still had 2 res nodes so that wasnt a problem.
Anyway, pointless as it may have been (we were never going to kill one hive, let alone three) it was really good fun and both the rines and the aliens had a great time.
they should make a gametype where the marines just have to stand as long as possible(something like those custom maps where both teams prepare for combat only with the kharaa having far more stuff). but last stands have brought up wonderfull moments in my gaming experience, during a last stand i have got my love for the GL(although i advice to keep your pistol) and the shotgun(a few scouts with shotguns that go gorge/res-hunting are a nice boost in your path to glory and take a large chinc out of enemy morale). i found out that hives could be grown even with 10 turrets shooting them and that all that balancing whining is crap(well i knew it longer, somewhere about 1.03).
the game is over wheb you've got a onos humping your CC not when a few skulks leap trough hallways(which is very insulting since it does almost no damage) comms and players just need to be a little bit more bold these days, 'cause often i am the only one who charges blindly at fades ignoring the payload of acid rockets(they rather acid rocket and damage themselves than finish me off in melee). to kill fades you've gotta death or glory the enemy in group while shouting stupid and annoying phrases. not f4
See How i figure it is like this.If you have been filling the glass its half FULL,because you are filling, and making it bigger...if you are drinking/spilling it the glass is half EMPTY because you are losing the fluid...
If you just find the glass in the middle of nowhere...Do you even give a ****?I mean drinking bottles out of nowhere is for bums...Now the question has turned to : Are you a bum?
Thank you!...
And i never f4
Unless you honestly dont give a damn!
