Weapon Animations

don't play every time
Had a quick search through this forum - can't find anything particularly relevant.

I'm having problems with weapon animations. About half the time, they don't show. For example, as a skulk, I'm chowing down on a res tower. The health on the tower is reducing, but the bite only plays at seeming random times. This includes all "fast fire" weapons like machine guns and the like (ie haven't noticed it on acid rockets).

It's only started happening since I upgraded my PC and upped the res (from 800x600 to 1024x768). However, my fps is still greater than what is was before.

Any thoughts ?

umm, there are a few problems with things like thins, I really don't know though. Could you be more specific about the other ones

forinstance when I am low on nrg the skulk bite will not play though I still hear the chomp, its odd

OK, specifically. I'm a skulk chomping a res tower. I hold the fire key so I'm permanently chomping (as you do). Quite often, the bite animation will not play. Neither will the chomp sound. However, I will always hear the res tower damage sound. And the health of the tower is constantly dropping. So the server knows I am constantly chomping, but the client seems sometimes to miss this fact. It seems to be random whether I get chomp animations/sound. However, the first chomp does always seem to play. I don't think it is anything to be with energy as I can get a missed chomp as early as the 2nd or 3rd chomp. Also, I may get 2 missed chomps in a row. Missed chomps can be as many as 50%.

Also, when I go full auto using an lmg, the playback of the shots are not constant like its missing some shots - again I think its missing playing some animations/sounds when firing.

I'm assuming that what I see on the client in terms of weapon animations/sounds are independent of what is happening on the server. For example, if I press fire as a skulk, the client will play a bite animation regardless of how laggy my connection to the server is. So I don't think its laggy servers.

I haven't re-installed NS since I upgraded. All I did was increase the res (better PC you see). And my fps is still much better at the higher res on the upgraded PC than it was with the old PC at the lower res. My net settings have remained constant across the upgrade so I don't it's these either.

I haven't changed my graphics card since this started happening although I think I upgraded the graphics driver.

I'm running in OpenGL. PC: XP2500 barton, 512 DDR333, gf3 vanilla. Conx: 512Mbps cable. This shoudl be plenty to handle NS in 1024x768.

    I'm mystified on this one.

This happens to me when the game lags really bad, perhaps connection settings are nerfed on your PC?

My NS net settings haven't changed from before and after the upgrade. Perhaps client animations are dependent on connection lag ?

Animations are dependent on FPS, and under high lag, FPS can become dependent on network connections.

When you installed NS, which network connection did you specify when prompted?

have you tried a LAN game to see what hap-pens with 0 lag?

    Monse:

Cable (512) I think. Anyway, I twiddle my rate, cmdrate etc... to suit.

I'll have a try tonight on Thansal's suggestion.

OK - I had a go on an empty server on my own. Ping was 20ms so no lag issues (checked with netgraph - no packet loss). Still getting the same problem.

I think I may try a re-install to see if it clears up the problem.
