This will be a competition to see who can make the most popular FUN map. Not the best looking map, but the map that the public likes the best. This will run for 3 weeks. The map that gets the most votes on our forums wins. The prize will be YOU GET TO PICK THE MAPS IN OUR SERVER ROTATION FOR A 24 HOUR PERIOD. Got a serious map no one will host or play? Heres your chance to make it the ONLY map on one of the most popular servers in NS land!
RULES:
#1 You may submitt ONLY 1 map, once submitted in this thread it will be put on our server for a 24 hour period. If the public likes it, it will advance to the finals and stay in our rotation until the competition ends. If the public dosn't like it, it will be removed from the competition and server map rotation. Likes and dislikes will be decided by votes from the public on our forum.
#2 The map must be a new release. The map may NOT have been released before today, 07/01/03
#3 The map must be named like this. fun_yourmapname.
#4 The competion will end on 07/24/03.
#5 The winners map rotation must have at least 1 map in it and no more than 10 maps.
#6 We all work and live by different schedules, so your 24 hour map rotation may be run at anytime between 07/24/03 and 07/30/03. You pick.
#7 Your map must have all the needed files, be complete and in working order. fun_yourmap will NOT be allowed to be fixed and changed to fun_map_b2. So make sure your map is in working order BEFORE you submitt it!
#8 The winning map will be decide by public votes on our forum.
#9 The map dosn't have to follow the NS mapping guidelines, you may have 10 hives, 3 marine starts or Scorpions that Hover without Flapping, the skies the limit, anything goes.
#10 The map MUST BE UNDER 2mb in size.
Why we are doing this:
Alot fo mappers think making a FUN map is beneath them. That it takes NO SKILL to make a FUN map. We disagree. Herers your chance to prove us and the NS public players wrong. Think you can whip up a map in a short period of time and have it be very popular? Heres your chance.
We are sure there are very good maps out there that *never* get played. One of them may be your map. By winning this competition you get your map hosted and played
[EDIT]With this contest ending the same day as the 2.0 release, I have moved up the ending date. This contest will now end on 07/24/03. The winning mapper will have until 07/30/03 to utilize his 24 hour map cycle. With a release date now set for 2.0 we would like to get this wrapped up before then.

Serious mapping takes more then four weeks just to make :-\
I just checked our server, its running ns_castlewars and has 16 of 17 players. The 17th spot is a reserved spot.

No, all serious mappers don't, only people who think fun maps are crap do. If you're looking for maps like misslecommand, sure, a few hours, if that long. If you're looking for a fun map like lost, napo, seige, etc... then no. I don't define a fun map by the time it takes to make. As for me I'm not going to bother entering, not worth the effort to make a map just especially for you.

I guess my teamdeathmath map falls under funmaps because:
- All 3 hives are in the same room.
- The hive-to-hive and hive-to-cc distances are not equal and will never be.
- They include a special rule or some rooms with game deciding abilities (e.g. siege room, generator hive <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> ).
- Their entity count is below 200 or above 800 (including lights and NS-specific).
Teamdeathmatch`s entity count is ~1400 now after I added 2 new features.
Yes, but at the post you said get your SERIOUS map played
Ollj, you <u>do</u> realise the the HL game engine will only run 1024 entities, and any above that will be dropped, assuming the server doesn't crash first.
MAX_MAP_ENTITIES = Used more than 1024 entities at the same time, you can use twice as much entities in one map but only 1024 should show up at once.
Yeah, I must run massive minespam and other spam tests.
But I never saw this compile error and the earlier version never crashed.
- oh jeah minespam pretty sure crashes the map (old news) but I build like 100 structures before.

Uh... I dunno about this, I think yeh sure could whip up a random klil box in seconds, 15 res there, 3 hives here, another 15 res for the marines... and a crate with monkies in.
But then again why bother - I'd prefer leave those kinda maps to people that do them best.

When it makes the 1 hour ollj "this **** finally works for 100%" test it is the (first) final release of ns_teamdeathmatch and ill release it as "fun_tdm_one", too.
I want "ns_tdm_..." to become an own kind of map with losts of custom arenas.
Sweet idea man! Fun maps kick ****! I like seeing other people pumping out interesting ideas compared to the norm of official maps.

Ok I am working on fun_marioworld! It is goint to kick rear.
fun_marioworld is now at Beta 1. This is my entry! hehehe. You use pipes to get around. Only way 2 and from hive area and marine start is some pipes.
[EDIT} Here is a .res file for your map. No sprite file Missing minimap? Include the res file in your zip for server ops. Just open it in notepad and edit and rename it for your other maps. NOTE: the .bsp does NOT need to be included in the .res file.
