<div class="IPBDescription">Pearls of wisdom you can pass along</div> My pearl of wisdom is, mines are a double-edged sword...
Do not think of them as useful past early game.. While there are times they can help you later, generally once aliens have 2 hives, they can get fades, with fades, come acid rockets, which trigger the mines causing an explosion that can injure/kill you (as a marine).
So once you see fades, stop asking for mines...
I played a game yesterday where one player kept asking repeatedly for mines even though there were fades... So to humour him we gave a few mines (thinking maybe he had some "plan" for them)
He proceeds to mine up our doors (like in beginning game) even though the black charred remains of the first "Acid Rocket'd" mines were still visable...
Needless to say, he got killed and several of us got killed as well...
So in closing, mines are fantastic against skulks... useless against fades.. So know their strengths and weaknesses and you will use them more effectively.

Which reminds me, anyone know the damage of mines in 2.0 now? If their proximity is wide then wouldn't the normal damage of the 1.04 mine be less than the 2.0 mine because the distace of the alien from the mine?
Use headphones, and jack up the sound as loud as you can stand. Just like in Quake, footsteps are key.
As a marine, it's nice to hear the skulk in the vent BEFORE it jumps on your head.
Commanders also benefit, since they can sweep across the map locating skulks, gorges, RTs and hives. Especially gorges; they are so chatty.
Even as aliens it is useful, tho probably not as much.
As a marine with LMG fire in bursts and aim carefully. Download a custom muzzle flash (I myself use a blue cross lookin one) But dont make em too small (cheaters beware!) also Kneel behind any pillars, door wars, arches you can to put a lil more distance between oncoming Skulks (kind useless against anything ranged)
Remember Pistols do more damage and are more accurate then a LMG.
Firing in bursts, checking your targets and using the pistol where appropriate is all good.
If the walk is too far away to go around, wait for the Fade to run away to his dcs, they always do. Then find a good dark corner, prefferably one that isn't a landmark <b>(somewhere they'd be expecting you to hide)</b> As soon as the Fade moves in on your base, move in on him. Unload all 50 bullets into his back, then as he chases you down with his claws put another ten into him with your pistola. If your commander had sense enough to upgrade weapons, then odds are he is probably dead or near death. Hope your teammates have sense enough to chase him down and finish it.

this is <b>so</b> true its stupid and its even better with EAX (the surround sound thingy)
also its helps alot more with the atmosphere of the game, even the friends firing can be scary at times lol
Infact on fades in general, they are not god, heh keep a middling distance so you can dodge the acid and just shoot shoot shoot, you will probably die, but fades can die surprisingly fast, a couple of those in a row and you have him dead
Oh and lerks, when they fly, don't shoot at them, shoot just under their feet (you'll know where's right from the blood and easier killing), it's a slight mismatch between the model and hitbox when flying (the moddel raises up when it flies, but the hit box doesn't, as much anyway) lerks are weaker than skulks hp wise for the most part so they can be killed pretty easily once you get a feel for where to shoot
Lol, and mines, yes he's right, if you can afford to, don't place them in the base, plant them away so when the fades blow them up your base and marines in there won't get caught in the blast... on the other hand they're not always effective outside of the cramped areas near structures... isn't NS simple? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

ohhhh i never knew that! no wonder it takes forever and a day to hit those things, thanks <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
This thread has some good advice on ettiquette. Pretty important, since if you irritate people they'll not be there to pull your buttocks out of the fire.

Actually EAX is for nubs.
If you are really serious about gaming and don't use XP, then find and install and Aureal Vortex sound card or something that has decent A3D support.
Read the SummerBlue report on CS or just find someone who has ever owned one if you want to know just HOW much better they are.
The best players may not have the best aim, but they know when NOT to fire. Only fire when you have the greatest possible advantage.
For example:
1. If you hear a skulk running on the other side of a wall an you know they do not know you are there, wait for them to run past you before firing. They will have to realize they are being shot, the direction, then turn around and run towards the bullets. If you even have the slightest aiming skills the skulk will be dead long before reaching you.
2. When fades are rocketing your base, they most likely have some sort of backup somewhere (gorge/D chambers). If you can get behind them, take down their support before attacking them directly. They will be too busy looking for marines to kill than to notice that they support system is going down. Once they lose their backup, fades die quickly.
3. If you manage to find a safe spot in an alien infested territory, dont start firing at the closest structure you see, wait a moment and determine where your 1 magazine of bullets will do the most damage. Chances are, once that first bullet hits, aliens will start swarming towards your locatation. 1 Magazine is probably all you can consistantly get out before losing a leg.
4. D chambers are the weakest alien structure. (edit: fixed some facts thanks 'a civilian') Make a note of this and take down the D chamber before O chambers. You probably will not kill an O chamber fast enough if it has a D chamber supporting it. Taking down the D chamber limits the aliens regenerative lifeline and makes O chambers less durable. Its a wonderful target.

My "Pearl" In 2.0 dont bother chasing fades, you wont catch them. (The new blink is amazingly fast and useful, so a fade can escape from combat VERY fast. )
Defense and movement chambers are the weakest alien structures, and they are approximately three times weaker than sensory chambers.

Aureal was good, but you exaggerate, oh mighty Grendel. Unless you are a audiophile with a super speaker rig, the difference isn't so great.
And the last time I checked, the drivers for Win2K were flaky too. It's a shame Diamond ran that chipset into the ground.
(Please don't hurt me, Mr. Lead playtester! <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> )
lay offense chambers in vent when you have the chance and the vent has enough room to stop marines going into alien territory(which is supposed to be the vents)
Slows em,if it slows em you have a chance <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Also,dont bother chasing fades anymore too,a good blinker in current version of NS can outrun you by a second or less,same for the new version
BTW,good screenshot SYPHER,tells them nubs what to NOT do when going commander
According to the <a href='http://www.summerblue.net/games/cs_report/' target='_blank'>Summerblue CS Report</a>, <a href='http://www.summerblue.net/games/cs_report/4_7_audibility.html' target='_blank'>using A3D allows you to hear sounds twice as far as you normally could</a>, thus giving you an advantage.

I used to LOVE my Aureal Vortex II sound card. I then ended up going to XP and there are no drivers for it. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> I miss those days, because it was so awesome to be able to tell exactly what was going on where. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Not exactly being impartial, are we? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
That report stated that SOME sounds are louder. It didn't go into great detail. Based on the info there, this sounds more like a driver error than a planned advantage. Yeah, I'm calling it an exploit.
And everyone conveniently forgets to mention that A) it works for exactly ONE Aureal chipset, and B) voicecomms don't work at all.
If you got one, more power to you, but EAX users aren't nubs. And for anyone wondering, I don't have an EAX card.
I don't.

It wasn't me who said they were.
Always chase a fade if you dont have any weapons/equipment (IE Jetpacks, HMGs, etc...). That head strong fade should not know when to run, and less than one clip of an unupgraded marine can kill the bugger, as long as he doesnt have carapace. If hes going to blink away you wont get harmed in the first place.
Always chase fades my friend, charge em to death.
<!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::fade::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/fade.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fade.gif'><!--endemo--> = good.
Use headphones darnit.
And to civ, yeah I know Grendel said that. I wasn't real clear there. Sorry.
To make amends, I'll suggest another pearl:
As a Skulk, have Parasite as your armed weapon at all times. Your first reflex should NOT be to bite a marine, but to parasite him instead. After scoring a hit, THEN try to kill him. Now, even if you die, that marine has the big "kill me" sign on him. Sometimes they will suicide themselves if they only have LMGs.
If you can para an JP or HA, CHAT THAT EVENT to your teammates. It's the kind of move that can save your hive.
