I will definitely need to play around with this thing a lot more, but it was vaguely fun in the training missions (although it reinforces my Marine predisposition for thinking that they don't teach Army recruits properly). I was (at 3am) unable to find options to increase my mouse turning rate, lower my video settings to 16bit, or do a bunch of other things to get it to run smoothly on my (rather new) PC. So bleh.
I do need a new video card though. Soon. This GF2 has had it - time for the TI.
Strange thing is, they designed this game with a GF2 in mind.Just check the Nvidia mirror. And if they don't have optiosn to lower some stuff, I'm going kill 'em.Yes, the Army.
Ok just a heads up to everyone who wants to try this bad boy out:
First of all, the game itself looks fantastic. Graphics are excellent, physics, ambience, and all that seem to be in order.
However, I am unable to vouch for the multiplayer aspect of this game becase of several reasons, which are ultimately the result of poor planning on the Military's side.
1) There are only 40 servers. Yep, 40 servers, and 1900 people wanting to play. Not pretty.
2) In order to actually play a regular mission online, you must complete a scenario called MOUT_McKenna online. This earns you your qualifications and allows you to play on any server/map you choose. Funny thing though, everyone needs to play this map, but when I looked on GS there were 3 servers running it. Yes, 3, and I should once again stress that there were 1900 people who wanted to play last time I logged on. This doesn't speak well for the military... You'd think they'd have the foresight to plan for this kind of thing.
3) You cannot create a server, thus contributing to the congestion problem noted above.
Aside from that, everything seems fine. Let's just hope that in a couple weeks the Army wises up and gets some more servers online, or releases the server files... The game has potential.
Damn. You have to do that ONLINE?And there's only forty servers?Who's the ####### genius behind that plan? And worse yet, you have to use Gayspy just to get online.Boy, our army has a lot of intelligence high up in the ranks.
It's not run by the Army, it's contracted to a civilian gaming company that did all the work, runs the servers, etc. It's owned by the Army.
I would prefer they had not enough servers, then add more to meet demand, rather then have paid for way too many servers, not have it be popular, and throw my taxes in the sewer.
You cannot create a server because they want tight control of the gaming environment to prevent lame behavior. That is why HomeLanAlliance is going to run some servers as well.
It's free, just like a mod, so suck it up or don't play.
The genius who thought it up was the Army's recruiting organization. And it is genius. It's not for your amusement so much as it is for their quotas.
Also, Kidzelda specifically, you get this warning about using homophobic language in your posts. If I see it again, you get a 1 week suspension. Not tolerated.
Yes Monse, all that is true, and by no means am I fed up with the Army. The game is free, after all. I'm just letting everyone know that if you wanna play, you're most likely going to have to wait a couple weeks until they release the server files, or they buy around 300 more servers.
Sigh, Game looks great, but, I can't play until they get the server browser, Gamespy doesn't work on my computer
To anyone that can't figure out how to qualify successfully on the MOUT multiplayer, here's how.
You've probably been told that you have to be on a MOUT McKenna server to unlock the rest of the maps. What they might not have told you is that you have to leave the game as soon as you reach the sgt/ssg rank for it to save your qualification. Do so, and have fun with the rest of the game. It's really quite fun once you get into the live fire missions.
AHHHHH. That explains why I haven't been able to pass it (and having about 20-0, winning all the rounds). Ok, now I have to find a way to get back into those servers
From what I understand, and believe me, people within HomeLAN have probably ripped this program apart by now looking into it, the army just wants your e-mail address for recruiting purposes (at least those of you who are U.S.) It's not too much to ask, actually. Free game, hella fun online, and the price? Deleting a few e-mails every now and again. Hell, if worse comes to worse, you can always block the domain.

For everyone that plans to continue playing AA, I suggest using Gamespy3d instead of Arcade. It spares you the spammy chat and some other useless features. In fact, I think it can compare to ASE in ease of finding and playing games.
So anyone who lives in America gets a great game and a few E-mails, maybe a career in the Army. And anyone who doesn't gets a great games and a few E-Mails... I like how this works.

If I wanted realism, I would go outside and eat a plant.

Just got a 36 on my BRM!
Unfortunately, sniper school isn't in the "recon" version!
Oh, and i'm DLing ADaware now, I't'd be all to easy for some recruitment officer to be using this to screen for possible recruits...
Hmm, no spyware... thats IS wierd
Hmm, at this rate I'm gonna have a "heart attack" at age 17..
Or do what I do: Spend eight years in the Marine Corps, sign up for AA, wait for recruiter to call, listen to his crestfallen voice when you tell him that you outrank him, hang up.
New version with AA support:
http://gamespy3d.fileplanet.com/GameSpyInstaller260000STD.EXE
And you don't even have to go through fileplanet to get it :D
