read me.
hey i know a fair few of us use custom models. here.. and this may h ave been done before.. but i stay out of general forum usually... too much about 1.1 or 2.0 even.. it blows my mind!

but.. by default it is set to 1... i request that it is set to 0 by default.... and then if a server admin feels that stronlgy he can set it to 1 but for the majority of publicks we could use custom models...

how does that sound to everyone?

no, cos custom models can lead very very easily to unfair advantages. which is, i assume, why its set to 1.

    High Contrast or spiky models.
  • EzekielEzekiel Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3006Members
different colour, shape, spiked, whatever models.

    giving an unfair advantage.

Easy, I could make a bright pink box and use that, then I would notice skuls more easily if i was marines

bah, you look at modding like the llamas do, I mod just to make my game more fun, the game would suck with no mods since I can never bare keeping the defualt crap, none of my mods should make the game easier and infact, prolly even make it harder to play at times, I think if anything, put things like size limits to models such as players or p models so we cant spike them and such. btw now matter what even if you take out modding like CS did with their new patch it'll still not stop cheating since all it'll stop is ppl having fun with the game by putting their own interests in it

Possible rewording of that on the official NS forum may be advisable.

Whilst cheating is a possibility, maybe even a probability in some circles, custom modelling does help keep a mod alive well after sell-by date.

    Default to 0 imo.

I tend to agree with you but not everyone that plays is mature enough to not do things like make fades look like barney and skulks look like pink dumbos. It is this reason that server admins force file consistancy. One bad apple...

i look at modding in this way because ive had models used against me in cs. so naturally im against em, **** all wrong with the default ones as well.

in my eyes tis just another way to cheat.

Could set up some sort of a consistency list of pre-approved files, for example a model is released, then checked by whoever manages the list and added if it is not a spiked/day-glo pink/etc model. When you join a server, your models are checked against the list of (very prescise) file sizes and if they match you pass the consistency check. Just a little idea, and I can see how hard it would be to review the large numbers of submitted models and for the server ops to keep up-to-date. However this would be cool if they could get it to work - custom models supported and cheats reduced to an absolute minimum.

I believe we've already had this battle, and it ended up being off by default.

Heh heh . . . it always amazes me when people think that insulting the devs is actually going to help their cause. Nice work, Einstein.

I see why people object to the custom models in leagues / clan games, fair enough I think in the circumstances, as long as configs are checked as well.. but most of the ones released at the minute are hardly cheaty...take the "Aliens" models for instance, they're actually harder to see than defaults.

Now spiked models, thats a completely different thing and plainly out of order. I think the dividing line is whether the models were created specifically because they would give an advantage or not. ( see the rather lame "flat red mines" currently lurking in modelling..)

At the end of the day, even primary coloured Pokemon models would give you less of an advantage than cranking your gamma up..but no-one here would do that, surely?

I'm against model moding. While I do enjoy throwing in the Aliens mod.. (Those damb aliens scare me a lot more then Skulks ever did.) It does not take much effort to replace the skin with something visible. (I also agree that some custom models make the game more difficult.)

If their is one thing I have learned from having kids. If you give an inch.. you know the drill. The cheat models are out there and are used often. There will always be cheaters but tempting fate isn't such a good idea.

Besides, a lot of work went into making original models. If you have mods use them in the Half Life engine away from serious NS players.

I think the obvious solution is ( as someone else said )simply have two NS installs. "serious" players can use completely stock NS for their clan and league games which will almost certainly be mp_consistency "1", while retaining the option to play with funky new models, sprites, whatevers on the other install.

    Job done, everyone's happy.

it is like a state of mind the model puts me in...
