kind of a 40k Tau weapon
Out of boredom I thought I'd make one of the Tau weapons when I was reading a preview of the game, and it's coming along nicely. However, I'm intending to use this for a HMG (don't flame if it's unsuitable - I neither care nor know anything about the Tau) and there's no clip on the Tau model anywhere, so where do you think would be a good place to store 150 bullets on this thing?

hey kooooool looks really good but maybe u should get rid of that long thing under the gun and put a drum mag there and wheres the handle i see a trigger

A little update, with a bigger handle (I noticed how tiny it was just after I posted ), better definition on the some holes towards the back, and the round thing at the front added. It's currently 884 polys, and needs the scope/sight to be finished, and some kind of reloading mechanism. I think when it's finished and optimised it'll probably wind up at around 900 polys.

Looks more like a laser weapon of sorts to me...so it would have some sort of lazer battery/core thingy, not a drum of 150 rounds. Thus...my imgination dies.../me hates laser weapons so...strange and unfamiliar.../me pees pants in thoughts of the unknown

Ofcourse it a screw... easy to use weapon! not aven a blind man can miss with his screw driver when its time for the weakly maintence of the gun

Why not make it a bullpup design backwards and store the ammo on top of the stock...or below it...I just think on top would make it new and give it a bit of PIZAZZ!
• irusirus Join Date: 2003-06-29 Member: 17788Members
Wait I have a better idea, why not an ammo box...we have not seen those in a long time!

I've been trying all kinds of different ways of reloading it, and I'm starting to think I should just make up some nonsense about it having a stock of nanites who make its ammo, and just having the display on the sight saying something like "regenerating ammo" while it reloads. It's cheap, but it's better than putting on something that looks out of place.

Something tells me that bulky tray-thingy underneath the barrels is the magazine, I dunno, I haven't messed with anything Warhammer-related in ages.
• MelajoMelajo Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15171Members
ITs a nice model (but learn to use smoothing groupz...)

Maybe if a magazine is run through the gun, so the rounds are transferred to an internal magazine. So No fumbling with removing a spent mag and replacing it.

But you are gonna have to add a bit more polies to this monster. Either that or you can skin a hole in and use transparency.
• MausMaus Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5599Members
I know smoothing groups like the back of my hand. I also know that Milkshape likes to fluff you around when you model, and that it's best to leave them til the end if you don't want to constantly reassign them.

---

Here's what I came up with for the clip. The bit where it goes into the gun needs a wee bit of work, but the basic idea's there. Two 75-bullet clips, joined in a U-shape.

Hummm..i collect Tau, the clip is located at the back of the gun under the handle like the Grenade Launcher, but don't bother redoing it cos it looks ace as it is, very good job Maus, who going to skin it ?

the ammo could go in a top loading box just infront of the scope, like a slot in battery, i think that cuz the tau use energy weaps u should have a battery pack instead of a clip, just a rectangle with green tubes in it to look like it has green bullets. also to cover up the fact that the hmg is a particle weap, good sounds and sprites should be included to cover that up

It's not a Tau gun though. It might look like one, since it's heavily inspired by (or heavily ripped off from) one of my brother's models, but it's not Tau - it's Project-X.

darnit, I should have seen this earlier, I collect and play a Tau army.

That's a Tau Pulse Carbine, n00blar. That thing under the front part of the gun is a photon grenade launcher. From the cover art of the codex, you would think it fires lasers. But since the Imperial Guard have lasguns (lasers, basically) and there's muzzle flash coming from lasguns, I wouldn't trust the art. Since the lasgun (commonly referred to as a "flashlight" by IG players because of its weakness) shoots energy and can't penetrate armor, Tau weaponry cannot possibly be using energy for their weapons since it has an AP value of 5. Since they also employ huge freakin' railguns on their Broadside battlesuits, the best guess would be that they have Gauss-esque rifles. But the Pathfinders are soon going to have a miniature railgun to use as a sniper rifle, which wouldn't make sense, since they probably already have railguns. My guess is that they don't propel the ownage far enough, so they took the railgun off a broadside and shrunk it.

The Summer Battle Tour is coming to my local shop this Friday.. w00t!

Not much of an update - just the clip and better highlights/shadows are new here. However, all that's left to do now is finishing the scope (and putting improved shadows under it) and the trigger, then just a few wee details too. Then I need to animate the fluff.er unless there are volunteers to do the reload for me (I can rip the rest from the default LMG, I think, but I hate doing reload anims).

edited because the completely harmless word I use to replace a naughty f-word now gets itself cut out by the swear filter too. Feh. (OMG swear filter evasion!! Ban me!)

Quick test - the skins at the back clearly need a lot more detail, as they're blurry as all hell. It also looks like this model might be too small to pass for a HMG. Opinions?

Scale it up

Really though, as you already said the skin's more of a filler for now. But the p_ model is perfect for an HMG, I'd just toy around with the origins and the model scaling a bit to get the right feel.

Nice job.

good job so far. but... don't forget to use transparecy on the.... uhm... "scope" (!?)

Actually, if it's based on the Pathfinder version, the scope on the underside would be the 'Markerlight' the Tau have on their units. It's basically a LTD.

Now why would I want to do a thing like that? It'd have those crazy brightness-shifting side-effects of additive transparency and require me to pointlessly model the inside of the viewfinder too. It's going to be a scren with a black background, with some kind of radary thing drawn on, I think.

In fact, I think it's going to have an Elite radar oval-with-W.
